Loneliness is a defensive strategy disguised as moral superiority.

The fragile bridge formed between the Underground Man and Liza collapses beneath the weight of reality. When Liza visits his cramped and shabby apartment, the protagonist is stripped of the heroic image he had constructed during their encounter at the brothel. He is no longer the eloquent moral guide speaking of salvation and suffering. Instead, he appears as a poor, irritable clerk trapped inside humiliation, bitterness, and material poverty. This episode explores the tragic moment when the underground soul chooses the safety of isolation over the terrifying vulnerability of being genuinely loved.

Liza’s arrival confronts the Underground Man with the reality he has spent his entire life hiding from others. His small room, his shabby clothes, and the humiliating presence of his servant expose the truth behind his intellectual performances. He feels spiritually naked before another human being.

For the Underground Man, this exposure becomes unbearable. Love appears dangerous because it requires surrendering the illusion of superiority that has protected his wounded ego for decades. To be seen honestly feels worse than loneliness itself.

The Underground Man cannot separate human connection from humiliation because his entire identity has been constructed around defensive self-consciousness.

At the same time, Liza’s presence reveals the possibility of genuine compassion untouched by social hierarchy or intellectual games. She arrives not to judge him, but to reach him emotionally. Yet precisely because her sincerity is real, it threatens the underground structure sustaining his identity.

Unable to tolerate vulnerability, the Underground Man turns immediately toward cruelty. Instead of accepting affection, he attempts to destroy the emotional connection before it can expose his dependence upon another person.

The tragedy of the scene lies in his awareness of his own behavior. Even while humiliating Liza, he partially understands the cruelty and cowardice of his actions. Yet consciousness alone cannot save him from repeating the destructive patterns of pride and resentment governing his life.

The encounter therefore becomes one of the most devastating moments in Notes from Underground. The protagonist stands directly before the possibility of grace and human intimacy, yet chooses bitterness and domination because suffering has become safer to him than love itself.

This terror reveals the distorted self-image haunting the underground soul. The protagonist believes love is possible only if he remains powerful, distant, and admired. Genuine intimacy, however, requires the acceptance of weakness and imperfection.

Instead of recognizing that Liza came out of compassion and emotional sincerity, he interprets her presence as a threat exposing his insignificance.

The Underground Man becomes obsessed with appearances. He focuses on his tattered clothes, the dirtiness of the room, and the humiliation of his social position rather than the emotional courage required for Liza to come to him at all.

At the same time, this obsession reveals the material and spiritual prison he has built around himself. His consciousness cannot move beyond shame because identity remains entirely dependent upon imagined judgments from others.

Liza’s sincerity therefore becomes unbearable precisely because it asks nothing from him except honesty. Yet honesty would require abandoning the protective mask of superiority that has defined his underground existence.

The fear of exposure ultimately transforms his own home into another underground prison, where pride prevents the possibility of receiving genuine human compassion and love.

The Cruel Rejection as a Defense of the Fragile Ego

Terrified by vulnerability, the Underground Man suddenly turns against Liza with shocking cruelty. He confesses that his previous moral sermon was nothing more than a game of power and manipulation. Instead of protecting her feelings, he deliberately attacks her hope and sincerity.

This emotional violence functions as desperate self-defense. By humiliating Liza first, he regains control over a situation where he had begun feeling emotionally exposed and powerless. Cruelty becomes easier than accepting intimacy.

The Underground Man would rather be hated and isolated than risk being loved while remaining weak, poor, and emotionally dependent. Love appears humiliating because it demands openness.

His rejection of Liza therefore becomes an attempt to restore the underground identity built around superiority, self-sufficiency, and resentment. By destroying connection, he preserves the illusion of control.

At the same time, the scene exposes how completely the protagonist has forgotten how to participate in ordinary human tenderness. Every emotional encounter becomes transformed into a struggle for dominance or submission.

The Underground Man equates vulnerability with defeat. In his distorted logic, maintaining the integrity of the underground requires rejecting any relationship capable of breaking through his protective isolation.

The protagonist has spent so many years surviving through pride and bitterness that genuine affection now feels existentially threatening.

The cruel rejection of Liza therefore becomes the final triumph of fear over love, where the stone wall of pride proves stronger than the open possibility of shared human life.

What Remains After Liza Leaves

Liza’s departure becomes the final moment when the Underground Man could have accepted a genuine human connection. As she prepares to leave, he suddenly presses money into her hand as if trying to erase the intimacy that had briefly appeared between them.

Even at that moment, he cannot endure vulnerability without turning it into humiliation. Instead of speaking honestly, he hides behind cruelty once again.

After Liza leaves, he notices that the money has been left behind. The small gesture shakes him more deeply than any argument or accusation could have done. For the first time, he sees how empty and pathetic his performance of superiority has become.

The room grows silent again after her departure. The Underground Man remains alone with the memory of what he has just destroyed with his own hands.

He understands his loneliness, his cowardice, and the cruelty of his behavior. Yet understanding alone changes nothing. He remains trapped inside the same patterns that have shaped his underground existence from the beginning.

Liza briefly offered him the possibility of tenderness and human closeness, but he could not accept it without fear and resentment. The connection disappears almost as soon as it appears.

By the end of the scene, the Underground Man is left once again inside the isolation he helped create for himself. The underground survives, but only by cutting him off from the warmth and vulnerability he secretly longs for.

The final tragedy is not simply that he suffers. It is that he continues choosing the suffering that feels familiar over the frightening possibility of love and change.

리자가 떠난 뒤 지하 인간에게 남은 것
