What Is the Odyssey?

The Odyssey is an epic poem attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. It tells the long journey of the hero Odysseus as he returns to his homeland, Ithaca, after the Trojan War. The war had ended, but his return marked the beginning of another kind of time. He had been a king, a warrior, and a man who survived countless battles. Yet what this story speaks of is not the adventure of a hero defeating monsters, but the process by which a human being returns to being human after war.

The war is over, but a heavier silence comes after victory. The companions who fought beside him are gone, and although the war has ended, life continues. Odysseus now begins another struggle. It is not a struggle to kill monsters, but a struggle to remain human.

The Long Journey of Odysseus

Throughout his journey, countless temptations and trials await him. On one island, sweet fruit makes people forget reality. In another place, a comfortable life tempts him to remain forever. A beautiful voice leads sailors toward destruction. Elsewhere, another force turns human beings into beasts. The monsters in this story are not merely creatures of fantasy; they are symbols of the choices that make human beings no longer human.

Odysseus passes through all of these temptations and chooses his path again. He sails not to become a king, but to return to being human. His homecoming is not simply the return of a victor, but a long process in which a human being recovers himself.

The Meaning of the Odyssey in Greek Mythology

We may not be living on a battlefield. Yet battles still exist in our lives. Examinations and competition, livelihood and responsibility, and countless choices test us. Sometimes we encounter sweet fruit that makes us forget reality. Sometimes we are tempted to choose a life that resembles a comfortable prison.

For this reason, the story of the Odyssey is both an ancient myth and a story of the present. It asks a question. As we pass through a life like war, are we still returning to being human?
