The Odyssey Introduction – What Does a Human Being Seek After War?
The Odyssey follows Odysseus after the Trojan War, as he wanders across the sea and struggles to return home.
The Odyssey begins after the war has ended. Troy has fallen, the fighting is over, and the Greek warriors prepare to return to their homes. Yet for Odysseus, the end of war does not bring immediate peace. He must leave the ruined city behind and cross a sea filled with danger, temptation, loss, and delay. His journey asks what remains for a human being after violence, victory, and survival.
The Fall of Troy and the Beginning of the Journey
Troy has been destroyed, and the long war has reached its end. The warriors who survived now face another task. They must return from the world of battle to the world of home.
For Odysseus, this return is not simple. He has survived the war, but survival does not restore his life at once. The sea lies between Troy and Ithaca, and that distance becomes the space where his character will be tested.
The fall of Troy leaves behind glory, ruin, and memory. Odysseus is one of the men who helped bring the city down, but victory does not free him from hardship. The war ends, yet its consequences continue to follow him.
His journey begins with departure. He must leave the battlefield, the broken city, and the identity of the warrior. What waits ahead is not another ordinary voyage, but a long passage through danger, loss, and longing.
The Odyssey therefore begins where war seems to end. A man who has survived battle must now discover whether he can return to the life that existed before it.
Odysseus and the World of Wandering
Odysseus is not only a warrior. He is also a traveler, speaker, strategist, husband, father, and king. His strength is not measured only by weapons, but by endurance, intelligence, and the ability to survive changing conditions.
The world he enters after Troy is unstable. Islands, monsters, storms, enchantments, and divine powers interrupt his path. Each place offers danger, but also a different form of temptation or delay.
Odysseus must keep moving, yet movement alone does not guarantee return. He can sail, fight, escape, and speak, but the road home remains uncertain. Wandering becomes a condition in which time, identity, and desire are repeatedly tested.
His men travel with him, but they do not all survive. The journey home becomes a journey of loss. Each mistake, hunger, curiosity, or act of disobedience can change the fate of the whole group.
Through Odysseus, the poem follows a human being who wants to return but cannot control the world he crosses. He must use intelligence, patience, and memory to keep the idea of home alive.
The Meaning of Return and Homecoming
Home in the Odyssey is not only a place on a map. Ithaca is the place where Odysseus is husband, father, king, and human being beyond war. To return there means more than reaching land.
Yet home has not remained unchanged while he was gone. Penelope waits under pressure, Telemachus grows up without his father, and the palace is filled with men who consume Odysseus’ household. Return requires recognition, restoration, and judgment.
Odysseus must come back not only from distance, but from the condition of wandering. He must pass from survival into belonging. He must become visible again to the people who have waited for him and to the house that has nearly lost its order.
The desire to return is therefore tied to memory. Odysseus continues because he remembers who he is and where he belongs. Without that memory, the sea would become endless and every delay would become a new life.
The Odyssey asks what a human being seeks after war. Odysseus seeks home, but home means identity, relationship, order, and the possibility of living after violence. His journey begins with the sea, but it is carried by the need to return.

그러므로 돌아가고자 하는 마음은 기억과 연결되어 있습니다. 오디세우스는 자신이 누구이며 어디에 속하는지를 기억하기 때문에 계속 나아갑니다. 그 기억이 없다면 바다는 끝없는 공간이 되고, 모든 지연은 새로운 삶이 될 수 있습니다.
