The transformation of Oedipus as a blind king

After blinding himself, Oedipus can no longer remain as king. As the price of learning the truth, he gives up his sight by his own hand. Having lost his sight, he becomes a man who must face his inner self rather than the outer world. The man who was once king now remains as a human being burdened with guilt.

His figure changes from a symbol of power into a symbol of responsibility. He does not deny what he has done. Instead, he accepts it and carries out his own punishment. This scene shows what kind of attitude a human being can take toward his own actions.

This change is not simply a punishment but a transformation of existence. He is no longer a ruler but a figure who leaves behind a story. Humans cannot escape the consequences of their choices, but they can choose how to accept them. Oedipus carries that choice through to the end.

Oedipus’ self-imposed exile from Thebes

Oedipus decides to leave Thebes. He can no longer remain within that city. The act of leaving the city is not a simple movement but a separation from the community. He separates himself from the world to which he once belonged.

This road has no fixed destination. He walks without knowing where he must go. Yet this road is not an escape but a process of acceptance. Humans cannot always change the outcome, but they can choose how to live through it.

His exile is not imposed from the outside but chosen by himself. This is the important structure of this scene. He is destroyed by fate, yet his final choice is carried out by his own will. At this point, human dignity becomes visible.

The meaning of humanity in Oedipus’ tragedy

The story of Oedipus does not end as a simple tragedy. It carries a structure that asks what a human being is. Humans try to avoid the truth, yet in the end they are forced to face it. And at that moment, they come to understand their own limits.

What matters in this story is not failure but recognition. Oedipus loses everything, yet he comes to understand his life. Humans cannot control the outcome, but the moment they understand it, they reach another dimension. This is the central meaning that this narrative leaves behind.
