Ramayana Episode 5 – The Abduction of Sita
The peaceful life in the forest comes to an end when Ravana separates Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana through deception and abducts Sita.
Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana had been living quietly together in the forest for some time. Far away from the palace and the conflicts of Ayodhya, their days followed the slow rhythm of nature. Although life in exile remained difficult, the three gradually built a sense of stability within the forest. Yet hidden dangers already existed beyond the peaceful world they had created for themselves.
The Appearance of Ravana
Far away in the kingdom of Lanka, Ravana hears stories about Sita and becomes fascinated by her beauty. Ravana is known as a ruler of enormous strength, ambition, and authority. Unlike the quiet life unfolding in the forest, his world is connected to power, conquest, and desire. As his interest in Sita grows, the peaceful balance surrounding Rama and his companions slowly begins to break apart.
Rather than attacking directly, Ravana first prepares a careful plan. He understands that separating Rama and Lakshmana from Sita will create an opportunity to strike. To carry out the scheme, he sends one of his followers into the forest to lure Rama away from the shelter.
While Rama and Sita continue their quiet life without suspicion, danger steadily approaches through deception rather than open conflict. The forest that once appeared peaceful gradually becomes filled with hidden tension. Without realizing it, the three companions are already moving toward a moment that will completely change the direction of the story.
Ravana’s appearance marks the beginning of the central conflict of the Ramayana. Until this point the story has focused upon exile, loyalty, and adaptation to life in the forest. Now the narrative begins moving toward separation, war, and the struggle to recover what has been lost.
The Trick of the Golden Deer
One day a golden deer suddenly appears near the forest shelter. Its shining body and unusual beauty immediately draw attention within the quiet landscape. The animal moves gracefully between the trees, appearing almost unreal against the darkness of the forest. Sita becomes fascinated by the strange creature and continues watching it as it moves through the woods.
Captivated by the sight, Sita asks Rama to capture the deer for her. Rama accepts her request and begins following the animal deeper into the forest. Yet the golden deer is not what it appears to be. It is part of Ravana’s plan designed to pull Rama farther and farther away from the shelter.
As Rama disappears into the woods, the peaceful rhythm of the forest begins to collapse. The deer continues leading him deeper into unfamiliar parts of the wilderness while distance gradually grows between the companions. Soon only Sita and Lakshmana remain behind near the forest hut.
The moment creates the separation Ravana has been waiting for. What first appeared to be a harmless and beautiful creature becomes the beginning of disaster. The quiet life that Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana built together in exile starts breaking apart through illusion and deception.
The Abduction of Sita
After some time, a cry suddenly echoes through the forest sounding like Rama’s voice calling for help. Hearing the cry, Sita immediately fears that Rama may be in danger somewhere deep within the woods. Anxiety spreads through the forest shelter as she urges Lakshmana to go and protect his brother.
Lakshmana hesitates because he senses that something is wrong, yet he cannot ignore Sita’s desperate request. At last he leaves the shelter and disappears into the forest in search of Rama. For the first time since exile began, the three companions are completely separated from one another.
At that exact moment, Ravana reveals himself. Casting aside his disguise, he appears before Sita in his true form as the king of Lanka. The peaceful silence of the forest vanishes as Ravana seizes Sita by force and carries her away from the shelter.
With this event, the central conflict of the Ramayana fully begins. The forest that once sheltered Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana now becomes the place where separation, loss, and war enter the story. From this moment onward, the journey of the Ramayana moves toward a far greater struggle than exile alone.

시타는 라마에게 그 사슴을 잡아 달라고 부탁합니다. 라마는 그녀의 부탁을 받아들이고 사슴을 따라 숲 깊숙한 곳으로 들어가기 시작합니다. 그러나 그 황금 사슴은 실제 동물이 아니라 라바나가 준비한 계략의 일부였습니다. 사슴은 라마를 점점 더 멀리 유인하며 오두막에서 떨어뜨리기 시작합니다.
라마가 숲 속으로 사라지면서 세 사람이 함께 만들었던 평화로운 일상도 흔들리기 시작합니다. 사슴은 계속해서 라마를 낯선 숲 깊은 곳으로 이끌어 갔고, 오두막 근처에는 시타와 락슈마나만 남게 됩니다.
아름답고 harmless해 보였던 존재는 결국 재앙의 시작이 됩니다. 숲 속에서 이어지던 조용한 삶은 환상과 속임수 속에서 조금씩 무너지기 시작합니다.
시타의 납치
얼마 뒤 숲 깊은 곳에서 누군가 도움을 요청하는 외침이 들려옵니다. 그 소리는 마치 라마의 목소리처럼 들렸고, 시타는 즉시 그가 위험에 빠졌다고 생각하게 됩니다. 그녀는 불안 속에서 락슈마나에게 형을 도우러 가야 한다고 말하기 시작합니다.
락슈마나는 무언가 이상하다는 느낌을 받았지만, 시타의 간절한 요청을 끝내 거절하지 못합니다. 결국 그는 오두막을 떠나 숲 속으로 들어가 라마를 찾기 시작합니다. 추방 이후 처음으로 세 사람은 완전히 서로 떨어지게 됩니다.
바로 그 순간 라바나가 모습을 드러냅니다. 그는 변장을 벗어던지고 랑카의 왕으로서 본모습을 나타냅니다. 숲의 평화로운 침묵은 순식간에 깨지고, 라바나는 시타를 강제로 붙잡아 숲 밖으로 데려가기 시작합니다.
