Romance of the Three Kingdoms Episode 3 – Dong Zhuo, Lü Bu, and the Seizure of Luoyang

Dong Zhuo seizes control of Luoyang, and his rule collapses through betrayal driven by internal conflict.

In the late Han period, after the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the collapsed order failed to recover and left a vacuum of power. The central court had already lost control, and warlords across the regions began to reorganize order through their own strength. In this process, the figure who first entered the center was Dong Zhuo. He led his army into Luoyang and seized power.

Dong Zhuo’s Seizure of Luoyang and Tyranny

Dong Zhuo placed a young emperor on the throne and took real control of the court. He removed opposing forces, seized control of the palace, and began a rule based on fear. Luoyang lost its meaning as the center of the empire and turned into a space of power struggle. The power that should have restored order instead accelerated its collapse.

Under Dong Zhuo’s rule, the court lost its function. Officials remained silent or cooperated with him to preserve their positions. Fear replaced order, but such fear could not sustain itself for long. At this point, the empire was already collapsing from within.

Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu, Power and Betrayal

Beside Dong Zhuo stood Lü Bu, a warrior of exceptional ability. Lü Bu became the key figure sustaining Dong Zhuo’s power through overwhelming force. However, their relationship was not built on trust but on a bond maintained by power. A relationship bound by force always contains the possibility of fracture.

Lü Bu gradually developed suspicion and dissatisfaction toward Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo also could not fully trust Lü Bu and maintained tension. Between them, a structure emerged in which conflict could erupt at any moment. A relationship that began with power was already preparing to collapse from within.

Wang Yun and Diaochan, the Chain Strategy and the Fall of Dong Zhuo

Wang Yun used this fracture to act. He devised a plan to end Dong Zhuo’s tyranny and executed the chain strategy through Diaochan. Diaochan entered between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu, amplifying emotion and suspicion. The fracture in their relationship became impossible to conceal.

In the end, Lü Bu killed Dong Zhuo. The power that had seized Luoyang collapsed not by external attack but by internal betrayal. Yet this event did not restore order but marked the beginning of further chaos. The removal of the center of power left an even greater vacuum.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms reveals the structure of power and human relationships through this moment. Relationships sustained by force are not stable and can collapse from within at any time. Betrayal is an individual choice, but the structure that enables that choice already exists. A chaotic age is the environment that exposes that structure.

후한 말기, 황건적의 난 이후 무너진 질서는 다시 회복되지 못한 채 권력 공백을 남깁니다. 중앙 조정은 이미 통제력을 잃고 있었고, 각지의 군벌들이 스스로의 힘으로 질서를 재편하려 움직이기 시작합니다. 이 과정에서 가장 먼저 중심으로 들어온 인물이 동탁입니다. 그는 군대를 이끌고 낙양으로 진입하며 권력을 장악합니다.

동탁의 낙양 장악과 폭정

동탁은 어린 황제를 옹립하고 실질적인 권력을 손에 쥡니다. 그는 반대 세력을 제거하고 궁정을 장악하며 공포를 기반으로 한 통치를 시작합니다. 낙양은 제국의 중심이라는 의미를 잃고 권력 투쟁의 공간으로 변합니다. 질서를 회복해야 할 권력은 오히려 붕괴를 가속시키는 방향으로 작동합니다.

동탁의 지배 아래에서 조정은 기능을 상실합니다. 관리들은 권력을 유지하기 위해 침묵하거나 동탁에게 협력합니다. 공포는 질서를 대신하지만, 그 공포는 오래 지속될 수 없는 구조입니다. 이 시점에서 제국은 이미 내부에서 무너지고 있습니다.

여포와 동탁, 권력과 배신의 관계

동탁의 곁에는 여포라는 뛰어난 무장이 있었습니다. 여포는 압도적인 무력으로 동탁의 권력을 지탱하는 핵심 인물이 됩니다. 그러나 두 사람의 관계는 신뢰가 아니라 힘에 의해 유지되는 결속이었습니다. 권력으로 묶인 관계는 언제든 균열을 내포합니다.

여포는 점점 동탁에 대한 불만과 의심을 키워갑니다. 동탁 역시 여포를 완전히 신뢰하지 못한 채 긴장을 유지합니다. 두 사람 사이에는 언제든 충돌이 발생할 수 있는 구조가 형성됩니다. 권력으로 시작된 관계는 결국 내부에서 붕괴를 준비합니다.

왕윤과 초선, 연환계와 동탁 제거

이 균열을 이용한 인물이 왕윤입니다. 그는 동탁의 폭정을 끝내기 위해 계획을 세우고 초선을 중심으로 한 연환계를 실행합니다. 초선은 동탁과 여포 사이에 들어가 감정과 의심을 증폭시킵니다. 관계의 균열은 더 이상 숨길 수 없는 상태로 드러납니다.

결국 여포는 동탁을 제거합니다. 낙양을 장악했던 권력은 외부의 공격이 아니라 내부의 배신으로 무너집니다. 그러나 이 사건은 질서의 회복이 아니라 또 다른 혼란의 시작이었습니다. 권력의 중심이 사라진 자리에는 더 큰 공백이 남습니다.

삼국지연의는 이 장면을 통해 권력과 인간 관계의 구조를 드러냅니다. 힘으로 유지되는 관계는 안정적이지 않으며 언제든 내부에서 붕괴될 수 있습니다. 배신은 개인의 선택이지만 그 선택을 가능하게 만든 구조가 이미 존재합니다. 난세는 그 구조를 드러내는 환경입니다.
