Souls climb the steep terraces of Mount Purgatory beneath layers of ascending stone illuminated by growing light from above. Proud souls walk bent beneath enormous stones while an angel descends beside Dante and erases one of the marks of sin from his forehead with radiant wings. Far above them the summit glows faintly through clouds and mist.

Purgatory becomes a realm where suffering no longer traps the soul, but reshapes it.

The Purification of the Seven Deadly Sins Through Sacred Discipline

The terraces of Purgatory are arranged according to the seven deadly sins, beginning with pride and ending with lust. Each level forces the soul to confront the distortion that once governed its life. The punishments are not arbitrary cruelty, but disciplined correction reflecting the inner shape of the sin itself. Every trial exposes what repeated choices and habits slowly turned the soul into.

On the terrace of pride, souls bend beneath enormous stones pressing their bodies toward the earth. Those who once raised themselves above others now relearn humility through physical burden and lowered vision. Along the walls appear carvings portraying acts of humility from sacred history. The proud slowly regain the ability to see themselves truthfully within the larger order of existence.

The envious walk together with their eyelids sewn shut by iron wire, unable to look upon others with jealousy or resentment. Voices around them speak constantly of generosity, compassion, and shared joy. The wrathful move through thick smoke reflecting the blindness created by anger, while the slothful run endlessly to recover the spiritual movement they abandoned during life. Each terrace restores a damaged human capacity through deliberate spiritual labor.

The punishments continue upward through greed, gluttony, and lust, gradually purifying distorted desire itself. Souls consumed by greed lie face down upon the ground, learning detachment from material obsession. The gluttonous endure hunger and thirst beneath unreachable fruit trees, while the lustful pass through cleansing walls of fire. Through every stage, desire slowly turns away from self-centered appetite toward disciplined love and inner balance.

The Recovery of Freedom Through Endurance and Self-Knowledge

Unlike the souls of Inferno, the souls of Purgatory retain hope because they know their suffering will eventually end. This certainty changes the meaning of pain completely. Suffering becomes part of recovery rather than eternal condemnation. Even exhaustion and tears now belong to a movement toward renewal and spiritual freedom.

As Dante ascends the terraces, he gradually realizes that freedom is not simply the ability to act without restraint. True freedom requires mastery over the impulses and distortions enslaving the soul from within. Pride, envy, greed, and lust do not expand freedom. They trap human beings inside repetitive patterns of thought and desire. The ascent through Purgatory therefore becomes a slow release from inner bondage.

The souls climbing the mountain support one another through prayers, songs, and shared endurance. Their suffering no longer isolates them from others as it did in Hell. The harsh labor of purification gives way to deep stillness and harmony. Nature itself appears healed and whole.

The Earthly Paradise represents humanity’s original condition before fragmentation entered the world through sin. Here the soul no longer struggles against itself or reality. Desire and reason exist in balance while the world reflects divine order without distortion. Dante presents the garden not merely as a lost past, but as a recovered possibility toward which purification has always moved.

Within this sacred landscape flow the rivers Lethe and Eunoe. Lethe removes the memory of sin and guilt while Eunoe restores the memory of every movement toward truth and goodness. Together these waters complete the soul’s preparation for Heaven by healing both memory and desire. The pilgrim emerges inwardly renewed and capable of receiving divine light more fully.

The ascent through the seven terraces ultimately reveals that holiness is not passive innocence or blind obedience. It is the disciplined restoration of the soul through truth, suffering, humility, and love. Dante portrays purification as a difficult but necessary transformation through which human beings recover the freedom and integrity they were originally meant to possess.

그 위로 탐욕과 탐식, 정욕의 층계들이 이어지며 왜곡된 욕망 자체를 천천히 정화해 갑니다. 탐욕에 사로잡혔던 영혼들은 땅바닥에 엎드린 채 물질 집착에서 벗어나는 법을 배우게 됩니다. 탐식의 영혼들은 손이 닿지 않는 열매나무 아래에서 굶주림과 갈증을 견디고 정욕의 영혼들은 정화의 불길 속을 통과합니다. 각각의 단계를 지나며 욕망은 자기중심적 충동에서 벗어나 절제된 사랑과 내적 균형을 향해 방향을 바꾸어 갑니다.

인내와 자기 인식을 통해 회복되는 자유

지옥의 영혼들과 달리 연옥의 영혼들은 자신의 고통이 언젠가는 끝난다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 이 확신은 고통의 의미 자체를 완전히 바꾸어 놓습니다. 고통은 영원한 저주가 아니라 회복의 일부가 됩니다. 피로와 눈물조차 이제는 새로움과 영적 자유를 향해 움직이는 흐름 안에 놓이게 됩니다.
