The Odyssey Episode 4 - Calypso’s Island
The Odyssey Episode 4 - Calypso’s Island
Calypso’s island offers a peaceful life, but forces the choice between comfort and one’s true path.
Calypso and the Island of Ogygia
Odysseus’s voyage has not yet come to an end. Even after passing through many dangers and trials, he has still not reached his home in Ithaca. One day he finds himself on a distant island in the middle of the sea.
On that island lives a goddess named Calypso. She rescues Odysseus after he is carried there by the sea and allows him to stay on her island. The island is a beautiful and peaceful place filled with green forests and clear water.
As time passes, Calypso begins to love Odysseus. She asks him to remain on the island with her. If he stays, he could live a life that never grows old and time that never ends.
Why Odysseus Still Chose to Return Home
Yet Odysseus’s heart is still directed toward his home. He looks out across the sea and thinks of Ithaca. A life on that peaceful island is not a true return for him.
On that island there is no battle and no danger. The sea is quiet and time moves slowly. Yet that very peace becomes another trial.
In the end the gods tell him that he must continue his journey. Calypso chooses to let him go. Odysseus builds a small raft and sails back out to the sea.
The story of Calypso is not simply a story of love. It is a story about the choice a human being must make between a comfortable life and his own path.
So this scene leaves us with a question. Where are we staying now? And is the place where we remain truly our path, or merely a comfortable island?
Human Story Lab is a record that seeks to read human choices again through the ancient stories left by humanity. Calypso’s island is one of the scenes that shows the meaning of that choice most quietly.
