After tasting the lotus, the sailors forget their home and lose the will to continue their voyage.
The Lotus-Eaters and the Loss of Memory
After the Trojan War ends, Odysseus’s voyage does not immediately bring him home. His journey across the sea brings him to unexpected islands. One of them is the island of the Lotus Eaters.
On this island live people who eat the lotus fruit. Once someone eats its fruit, everything changes. Memory becomes blurred, and the place one must return to is forgotten. The fruit removes pain, removes worry, and makes time feel as if it has stopped.
Some of Odysseus’s sailors eat the fruit. After that, they no longer wish to continue their voyage. They want to remain on the island, forgetting their home, their voyage, and their purpose.
Odysseus drags them back to the ship. Even by force, the voyage must begin again. The moment they remain on that island, the journey is over.
There are no monsters on the island of the Lotus Eaters. There is no violent battle. The place is calm. Yet that very calmness is the danger, because it is the temptation that makes human beings forget their way.
Why Odysseus Forced His Men Back to the Ship
The danger of the island of the Lotus Eaters lies in its peace. There is no pain and no conflict. Nothing is required of anyone there. Yet at that very moment, a human being begins to forget his way. The voyage has not ended, but the will to continue has already stopped.
This story is an ancient myth, but it continues directly into our lives today. At times we encounter sweet fruit that makes us forget reality. Things that make us forget pain, forget responsibility, and forget the road we must return to.
For this reason, the island of the Lotus Eaters is not merely a place in myth. It is a story about the moment when a human being loses his way.

트로이 전쟁이 끝난 뒤, 오디세우스의 항해는 곧바로 고향으로 이어지지 않습니다. 바다 위의 여정은 예상하지 못한 섬들로 그를 이끕니다. 그 가운데 하나가 로터스의 섬입니다.
이 섬에는 로터스를 먹는 사람들이 살고 있었습니다. 그 열매를 먹으면 모든 것이 달라집니다. 기억이 흐려지고, 돌아가야 할 곳도 잊어버립니다. 그 열매는 고통을 없애고, 걱정을 없애고, 시간을 멈춘 것처럼 느끼게 만듭니다.
오디세우스의 선원 몇 명이 그 열매를 먹습니다. 그리고 그들은 더 이상 항해를 계속하려 하지 않습니다. 그들은 고향도, 여행도, 목적도 잊어버린 채 그 섬에 남으려 합니다.
오디세우스는 그들을 배로 끌어옵니다. 억지로라도 다시 항해를 시작해야 했기 때문입니다. 그 섬에 머무는 순간 항해는 끝나기 때문입니다.
오디세우스가 부하들을 억지로 배로 돌려보낸 이유
로터스의 섬에는 괴물이 없습니다. 피 흘리는 전투도 없습니다. 그곳은 오히려 평온한 곳입니다. 그러나 바로 그 평온함이 위험입니다. 인간이 길을 잊게 만드는 유혹이기 때문입니다.
로터스의 섬이 위험한 이유는 그곳이 너무 평온하기 때문입니다. 고통도 없고 싸움도 없습니다. 그곳에서는 아무것도 하지 않아도 됩니다. 그러나 바로 그 순간 인간은 자신의 길을 잊기 시작합니다. 항해는 끝나지 않았는데, 마음은 이미 멈추어 버리기 때문입니다.
이 이야기는 오래된 신화이지만 지금의 삶에도 그대로 이어집니다. 우리는 때때로 현실을 잊게 만드는 달콤한 열매를 만납니다. 고통을 잊게 하고, 책임을 잊게 하고, 돌아가야 할 길을 잊게 만드는 것들입니다.
그래서 로터스의 섬은 단순한 신화 속 장소가 아닙니다. 인간이 길을 잃는 순간을 보여주는 이야기입니다.
