Han Xin rises as a strategist in war but is later executed as power restructures within the court.
On the battlefield of the Chu–Han Contention, Han Xin appears as a figure who designs battles. He was not merely a general but a strategist who could change the entire flow of the battlefield. Even when Liu Bang suffered repeated defeats, Han Xin reorganized the structure of the war and reversed the balance. His presence functioned as a decisive variable that determined victory and defeat.
Han Xin’s Achievements – Strategist of the Chu–Han War
Han Xin valued deployment and timing over the size of the army. He moved along routes the enemy did not expect, divided the battlefield, and created victories. These strategies worked by neutralizing the strengths of the Chu forces. In the end, the war was determined not by the size of troops but by the design of structure.
Han Xin’s achievements were not simply victories but a reorganization of order. He understood how to control the battlefield and made that method repeatable. Through this, Liu Bang’s forces gradually acquired a stable structure. War shifted from individual bravery to designed order.
Enfeoffment as Marquis of Huaiyin – Position within Power
After the war ended, Han Xin was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Huaiyin. He was no longer a figure of the battlefield but a figure within the structure of power. However, this change was not stability but the beginning of tension. Ability on the battlefield was interpreted as a threat within power.
Liu Bang acknowledged Han Xin’s merits while at the same time remaining wary of him. The one who ended the war holds the potential to threaten the new order. Han Xin’s position rose, but surveillance over him was also strengthened. Within power, ability itself becomes risk.
Han Xin’s Execution – The Empress Lü Power Incident
In the end, Han Xin was arrested on charges of treason. This incident was not simply a matter of crime but a process of reconfiguring power. Empress Lü eliminated Han Xin in order to secure the stability of power. A meritorious figure of war becomes an object of politics.
After his arrest, Han Xin could not resist. His ability on the battlefield held no meaning within the court. He was strong outside the structure but powerless within it. This is the moment when the criteria of power change.
The Shiji presents a certain order through this scene. The one who creates war builds power, but power does not preserve that person. Human ability and the structure of power do not coincide. Han Xin’s death reveals that misalignment.

유방은 한신의 공을 인정하면서도 동시에 경계합니다. 전쟁을 끝낸 인물은 새로운 질서를 위협할 가능성을 가지기 때문입니다. 한신의 위치는 높아졌지만, 그만큼 감시도 강화됩니다. 권력 내부에서는 능력이 곧 위험이 됩니다.
한신 처형 – 여후 권력 사건
결국 한신은 반역 혐의로 체포됩니다. 이 사건은 단순한 죄의 문제가 아니라 권력 재편의 과정입니다. 여후는 권력의 안정성을 확보하기 위해 한신을 제거합니다. 전쟁의 공신은 정치의 대상이 됩니다.
한신은 체포된 이후 저항하지 못합니다. 전장에서의 능력은 궁정에서는 의미를 가지지 못합니다. 그는 구조 밖에서는 강했지만, 구조 안에서는 무력해집니다. 권력의 기준이 바뀌는 순간입니다.
사기는 이 장면을 통해 하나의 질서를 보여 줍니다. 전쟁을 만든 인물은 권력을 만들지만, 권력은 그 인물을 유지하지 않습니다. 인간의 능력과 권력의 구조는 일치하지 않습니다. 한신의 죽음은 그 불일치를 보여 주는 장면입니다.
