The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Episode 1 – The Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Collapse of the Han Dynasty

The Yellow Turban Rebellion exposes the collapse of the Han dynasty and marks the beginning of widespread disorder.

In the late Han period, the dynasty had already begun to fracture from within. The power struggle between eunuchs and imperial relatives weakened the central government. Control over the provinces steadily declined, and instability accumulated across society. The Yellow Turban Rebellion was the moment when this structural collapse became visible.

The Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Uprising of Zhang Jue

In 184, Zhang Jue organized the people based on the teachings of Taiping Dao and initiated a rebellion. Peasants had reached the limits of survival due to repeated exploitation and famine. Zhang Jue gathered followers by offering healing and the promise of a new world. Armies wearing yellow turbans spread rapidly, and uprisings broke out across the land.

This uprising was not merely a rebellion but a collective rejection of the existing order. The ruling power had failed to protect the people and had lost their trust. The expansion of the Yellow Turbans revealed that the state could no longer maintain order. At this point, the governing structure of the Han dynasty began to fundamentally collapse.

The Collapse of the Han Court in the Late Han Period

The Han court had already been paralyzed by internal power struggles. Eunuchs and imperial relatives continuously clashed for control of authority. These conflicts weakened administrative systems and undermined policy execution. The central government could no longer manage crises in the provinces.

To suppress the rebellion, the court delegated military authority to regional forces. This decision produced short-term results in controlling the uprising. However, it also enabled the independent growth of regional powers. An attempt to preserve order created new divisions.

The Beginning of Chaos and the Rise of Liu Bei

During this period, Liu Bei began his military activities by joining volunteer forces. He entered the chaotic world alongside Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Their bond was formed not for personal gain but based on loyalty and a righteous cause. This relationship became a central structure of the entire narrative.

Although the Yellow Turban Rebellion was suppressed, the chaos did not end. Regional powers no longer followed the authority of the central government. Power became fragmented, and competition intensified. The order of the Han dynasty was not restored but began to reorganize into a new structure.

후한 말 한나라 조정의 붕괴 과정
