Zhuge Liang attempts to restore the fate of Shu through the Northern Expeditions. He submits the Chu Shi Biao, clearly declaring his will and his sense of responsibility. These repeated campaigns are not merely attacks but attempts to turn back time. However, the battlefield now stands on conditions different from before.

The Northern Expeditions of Zhuge Liang and the Chu Shi Biao

Zhuge Liang launches multiple campaigns to pressure Wei. He attempts to change the course of the battlefield through meticulous strategy and order. His actions go beyond personal ability and sustain the fate of Shu as a whole. Yet the repeated campaigns leave behind an increasing burden.

The war does not end with a single victory. Zhuge Liang’s efforts produce results while simultaneously revealing their limits. The consumption of troops and resources accumulates over time. In the end, his struggle turns into a war of endurance.

Sima Yi’s Response and Strategic Patience

Sima Yi avoids direct confrontation and responds by drawing out time. Through the choice not to move, he maintains the balance of the battlefield. It is a moment when preservation becomes a greater force than attack. The conflict between the two becomes not a decisive battle but a prolonged standoff.

This standoff is not a matter of who wins. Time acts as a condition greater than the will of either side. Zhuge Liang’s repeated efforts demand an ever heavier cost. In the end, he dies on the battlefield, and the standoff begins to tilt toward its conclusion.

The End of the Three Kingdoms and the Transition to Jin

After Zhuge Liang, the power of Shu rapidly weakens. Wu also fails to sustain its independent balance for long. Within Wei, the Sima clan seizes power and alters the course of events. The balance among the three kingdoms can no longer be maintained.

The Sima clan inherits the authority of Wei, establishes the Jin dynasty, and brings the division into unity. The long period of war comes to an end at this moment. Yet this change is not so much a new beginning as the closing of an era. Thus, the Three Kingdoms pass into history.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms begins as a story of heroes, but in the end, no one remains. Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Sun Quan, Zhuge Liang, and Sima Yi, the figures who shaped an era, all fade into time. Countless choices and wars created an age, and that age ultimately passes. Humans can change a moment, but they cannot remain above time.
