Nietzsche’s Nachlass Episode 3 - How Was The Will to Power Compiled?

Loose manuscript sheets lie beside an unmarked bound book on a wooden desk, with soft light revealing their separate edges.

Loose manuscript pages lie beside a bound volume, inviting attention to the difference between writing a passage and arranging a book.

Nietzsche’s Nachlass Episode 3 - How Was The Will to Power Compiled?

The concept, Nietzsche’s book project, and the posthumous compilation: three distinctions that help us read The Will to Power.

Three Things Behind One Title

The expression “will to power” can refer to three different things: a philosophical concept, Nietzsche’s project for a book, and a compilation of notes published under that title. Montinari begins his study of the compilation by distinguishing these three. The distinction gives us a useful starting point because each raises a different question.

To investigate the concept, we examine how Nietzsche uses the expression. To investigate the project, we examine his plans for writing. To investigate the compilation, we examine how editors selected and arranged the material.

These questions can inform one another. Keeping them distinct allows us to explain more precisely what a particular piece of evidence establishes.

From a Project to an Edited Volume

Nietzsche left plans for a work titled The Will to Power. The familiar posthumous compilation, however, is an editorial construction. Its expanded 1906 form was prepared by Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche and Heinrich Köselitz, also known as Peter Gast. Montinari reconstructs the relationship between Nietzsche’s changing projects and the resulting compilation.

A plan provides evidence of an intention at a particular stage. Completing a book also involves deciding which passages belong, how they should be revised, and what sequence they should follow. The existence of a plan therefore leaves further questions about the relationship between that plan and a later edited volume.

Nietzsche Source’s account of the manuscript estate explicitly describes The Will to Power as a book Nietzsche never wrote. This statement concerns the status of the assembled book. It directs attention to the distinction between the surviving writings and the form in which editors presented them.

How Arrangement Shapes an Argument

Suppose an editor places a diagnosis of a problem at the beginning, a set of critical observations in the middle, and an affirmative statement at the end. Readers may understand that sequence as a movement from problem to solution. The sequence itself contributes to the apparent argument.

This is a general example of what arrangement can do. It is not a reconstruction of a particular section of The Will to Power. It helps explain why the authenticity of individual passages and the authority of their arrangement require separate examination.

A passage can belong to Nietzsche while the role it plays in an assembled volume depends on an editorial decision. To assess that role, we need to compare its position in the compilation with the context in which it survives.

What to Ask of an Edition

When consulting The Will to Power, we can begin by identifying the edition and its editors. We can then ask whether it supplies references that lead from the compilation’s numbered entries to the corresponding manuscript fragments.

Those references make comparison possible. What is the date of the fragment? What surrounds it? Does the passage appear complete, or has the edition selected only part of it? The answers determine how securely we can use it in an interpretation.

A quotation becomes more useful when another reader can retrace that route. The compiled volume offers one arrangement; the fragment’s surviving context provides evidence with which to examine it.

Returning to Nietzsche’s Writing

Recognizing the compilation’s editorial status gives us a more precise reading task. We can study a passage’s claims while also examining how its placement influences our understanding.

We can also investigate Nietzsche’s plans as plans. Their changes may reveal shifts in emphasis or in the proposed organization of a work. Establishing what those changes mean requires comparison between identifiable documents.

The next episode follows that question into the notes themselves. When Nietzsche changes a formulation or reorganizes a plan, what can we reasonably say has changed in his thinking?
