Epic of Gilgamesh - Can Humans Escape Death?

The Epic of Gilgamesh begins in Uruk, following a king who confronts power, friendship, and the question of death.

The story of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest narratives left by humanity. This story begins in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk. Surrounded by massive walls, the city was one of the largest cities of the ancient world. At the center of that city there was a king named Gilgamesh.

Who Is Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is remembered as a powerful king who ruled the city of Uruk. He is described as a hero of extraordinary strength. In the epic he is portrayed as a figure who carries both human and divine blood. For this reason his strength and authority dominate the entire city.

Yet his rule also brings fear to the people. The power of the king creates order in the city, but it also weighs heavily on its people. The people of Uruk gradually find it harder to endure this burden. At last they turn to the gods and ask for help.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu

The prayers of the people reach the gods. The gods decide that a being is needed to restrain the power of Gilgamesh. They resolve to create another figure who can stand against the king. That being is Enkidu.

Enkidu is born as a wild and powerful being of the natural world. He lives in the fields and forests among the animals. He lives without knowing the rules of human society. Yet his life soon begins to connect with the human world.

The Question of Death

The meeting of Gilgamesh and Enkidu becomes the central turning point of the epic. At first the two beings confront one another in battle. Yet their struggle soon turns into a deep friendship. The two heroes begin a series of adventures together.

They journey to the Cedar Forest and fight the monster Humbaba. They also face the Bull of Heaven in battle. Yet at the heart of this story lies a deeper question than war. It is the question of whether a human being can escape death.

길가메시 – 인간은 죽음을 넘어설 수 있을까?

길가메시는 우루크에서 시작되며 권력과 우정, 그리고 죽음이라는 질문을 마주하는 왕의 이야기를 보여줍니다.

길가메시 이야기는 인류가 남긴 가장 오래된 서사 가운데 하나입니다. 이 이야기는 고대 메소포타미아의 도시 우루크에서 시작됩니다. 높은 성벽으로 둘러싸인 그 도시는 당시 세계에서 가장 큰 도시 가운데 하나였습니다. 그리고 그 도시의 중심에는 길가메시라는 한 왕이 서 있습니다.

길가메시는 누구인가

길가메시는 우루크를 다스리던 강력한 왕으로 전해집니다. 그는 인간 가운데 가장 뛰어난 힘을 가진 존재로 묘사됩니다. 서사에서는 그를 인간이면서 동시에 신의 피를 지닌 존재로 이야기합니다. 그래서 그의 힘과 권력은 도시 전체를 압도합니다.

그러나 그의 통치는 사람들에게 두려움을 주기도 합니다. 왕의 힘은 도시의 질서를 세우지만 동시에 사람들을 짓누릅니다. 우루크의 사람들은 점점 그 무게를 견디기 어려워집니다. 결국 사람들은 신들에게 도움을 요청합니다.

길가메시와 엔키두

사람들의 기도는 신들에게 전달됩니다. 신들은 길가메시의 힘을 견제할 존재가 필요하다고 판단합니다. 그래서 왕과 맞설 수 있는 또 하나의 존재를 만들기로 합니다. 그 존재가 바로 엔키두입니다.

엔키두는 자연 속에서 태어난 거칠고 강한 존재입니다. 그는 들판과 숲에서 짐승들과 함께 살아갑니다. 인간 사회의 규칙을 알지 못한 채 자유로운 삶을 살아갑니다. 그러나 그의 삶은 곧 인간 세계와 연결되기 시작합니다.

죽음에 대한 질문

길가메시와 엔키두의 만남은 이 서사의 중심 사건이 됩니다. 두 존재는 처음에는 서로 맞서 싸우게 됩니다. 그러나 그 싸움은 곧 깊은 우정으로 바뀝니다. 두 영웅은 함께 여러 모험을 시작합니다.

그들은 삼나무 숲으로 원정을 떠나고 괴물 훔바바와 싸웁니다. 또 하늘의 황소와 맞서는 전투도 벌어집니다. 그러나 이 이야기의 중심에는 전투보다 더 깊은 질문이 놓여 있습니다. 그것은 인간이 죽음을 넘어설 수 있는가 하는 질문입니다.
