His figure symbolizes the overwhelming authority of a powerful king while also conveying the oppressive presence of a ruler dominating the lives of the people below. The vast city beneath him emphasizes Uruk as one of the great centers of ancient civilization and marks the beginning of the epic.
Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 1 – The King of Uruk
Gilgamesh rules Uruk with overwhelming power, while the gods begin preparing a force capable of opposing him.
The story of Gilgamesh begins in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk. Uruk was known for its enormous walls and monumental buildings that symbolized the power of early civilization. People spoke of those walls as one of the greatest structures built by human beings. At the center of that city stood a king named Gilgamesh.
The epic introduces Gilgamesh not simply as a ruler, but as a figure whose existence dominates the entire city. His strength, authority, and ambition shape the order of Uruk itself. Yet the story immediately presents another side of power. The same force that protects and expands civilization can also become a burden upon the people living within it.
As the people of Uruk begin suffering beneath the weight of Gilgamesh’s rule, the story moves toward the appearance of another figure who can stand against him. Through this movement, the epic begins exploring the relationship between power, restraint, civilization, and humanity. What first appears to be the story of a mighty king gradually becomes a larger story about human limitation and change.
At the beginning of the epic, Gilgamesh seems almost beyond ordinary humanity. However, the events that follow will slowly force him to confront friendship, suffering, mortality, and the limits of human existence itself. The king who rules the city will eventually face questions greater than power alone.
Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk
Gilgamesh is remembered as the powerful king who ruled the city of Uruk. He is described as a hero possessing extraordinary strength beyond ordinary human beings. In the epic, he is portrayed as a figure carrying both human and divine blood. Because of this, his strength and authority dominate the entire city.
Gilgamesh is also known as the king who built massive walls and monumental structures around Uruk. These structures symbolize the greatness of human civilization and the power of the king who governs it. The city itself reflects his ambition and strength.
Yet his rule also creates fear among the people. The power of the king establishes order within the city, but at the same time it places heavy pressure upon those living under his authority. The people of Uruk gradually begin feeling that they can no longer endure the burden of his rule.
The epic therefore presents kingship as something containing both greatness and danger. Gilgamesh protects and strengthens the city, yet his overwhelming power also isolates him from ordinary humanity. Strength without restraint becomes oppressive even when it belongs to a heroic ruler.
At this stage of the story, Gilgamesh appears almost invincible. However, the epic slowly begins moving him toward experiences that will force him to confront his own limitations and humanity.
The Decision of the Gods to Restrain Gilgamesh
The people of Uruk eventually turn toward the gods and ask for help. Their suffering becomes too great to endure in silence. The voices of the people rise from the city and reach the divine world. The gods look upon what is happening among human beings.
The gods decide that the power of Gilgamesh must be restrained. They conclude that another being is needed, someone capable of standing against the king himself. Only a figure possessing strength equal to Gilgamesh can confront him directly.
However, this new being will not come from the ordered world of the city. The gods choose instead to create a figure connected to nature and the wilderness. This decision establishes an important contrast within the epic between civilization and the natural world.
The gods therefore create a new life and send it into the world. That being is meant not only to oppose Gilgamesh, but eventually to transform him. What begins as resistance will later become friendship and change.
At this moment, the story begins shifting away from the isolated power of one king toward the relationship between two different forms of existence.
The Beginning of the Gilgamesh Story, the Birth of Enkidu
The name of the being created by the gods is Enkidu. He is born in the wilderness where open fields and forests meet. Enkidu lives among wild animals and moves freely through nature. He exists outside the structures and rules of human society.
At first, Enkidu knows nothing about civilization or the ordered life of cities. He lives according to the rhythms of the natural world itself. In this way, the epic presents him as a complete contrast to Gilgamesh, who stands at the center of urban civilization and royal authority.
Yet Enkidu’s life soon begins connecting with the human world. One day, a hunter discovers him living among the animals. Shocked by what he sees, the hunter returns and tells others about the strange and powerful figure living in the wilderness.
Through this discovery, the paths of Gilgamesh and Enkidu slowly begin moving toward one another. The meeting between the two figures approaches step by step. What first appears to be the creation of an enemy will eventually become the beginning of the epic’s deepest relationship.
This meeting soon becomes the event that begins moving the entire story of Gilgamesh forward.

신들은 길가메시 힘을 견제해야 한다고 판단합니다. 그들은 왕과 맞설 수 있는 또 다른 존재가 필요하다고 생각합니다. 길가메시와 맞서기 위해서는 그와 비슷한 힘을 가진 존재가 필요합니다.
그러나 그 새로운 존재는 질서 잡힌 도시 안에서 태어나지 않습니다. 신들은 자연과 야생에 연결된 존재를 만들기로 결정합니다. 이 선택은 작품 안에서 문명과 자연이라는 중요한 대비를 만들어 냅니다.
그렇게 신들은 새로운 생명을 만들어 세상으로 보냅니다. 이 존재는 단순히 길가메시에 맞서기 위해 만들어진 것이 아닙니다. 결국 그는 길가메시 자체를 변화시키게 될 존재입니다. 처음에는 저항으로 시작한 관계가 이후에는 우정과 변화로 이어지게 됩니다.
이 순간부터 이야기는 한 왕 고립된 권력에서 서로 다른 두 존재 관계로 이동하기 시작합니다.
길가메시 이야기의 시작, 엔키두의 탄생
신들이 만들어 낸 존재 이름은 엔키두입니다. 그는 들판과 숲이 만나는 야생에서 태어납니다. 엔키두는 동물들과 함께 살아가며 자연 속을 자유롭게 움직입니다. 그는 인간 사회 질서와 규칙 밖에 존재하는 존재입니다.
처음 엔키두는 문명이나 도시 삶에 대해 아무것도 알지 못합니다. 그는 자연 질서 자체에 따라 살아갑니다. 작품은 이를 통해 엔키두를 문명 중심과 왕권 중심에 서 있는 길가메시와 완전히 반대되는 존재로 보여 줍니다.
그러나 엔키두 삶은 점차 인간 세계와 연결되기 시작합니다. 어느 날 한 사냥꾼이 동물들 사이에서 살아가는 그를 발견하게 됩니다. 놀란 사냥꾼은 자신이 본 존재에 대해 사람들에게 이야기합니다.
이 발견을 통해 길가메시와 엔키두 길은 조금씩 서로를 향해 움직이기 시작합니다. 두 존재 만남은 점점 가까워집니다. 처음에는 적으로 만들어진 존재가 결국 서사 전체 가장 깊은 관계를 만들어 내게 됩니다.
이 만남은 곧 길가메시 이야기 전체를 움직이기 시작하는 사건이 됩니다.
