Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 1 – The King of Uruk

King Gilgamesh stands with an imposing presence atop the massive stone walls of Uruk, looking down at the sprawling ancient Mesopotamian city below. The vast urban landscape features grand temples and mud-brick structures under a clear sky, symbolizing the absolute power of the king over his civilization and the beginning of his legendary rule.

 

Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 1 – The King of Uruk

Gilgamesh rules Uruk with great power, leading the gods to create Enkidu to challenge him.


The story of Gilgamesh begins in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk. Uruk was known for its high walls and massive buildings. People of that time spoke of those walls as one of the greatest structures ever built by humans. At the center of the city there was a king named Gilgamesh.


Gilgamesh, the King of Uruk

Gilgamesh is remembered as a powerful king who ruled the city of Uruk. He is described as a hero of extraordinary strength. In the epic he is portrayed as a figure who carries both human and divine blood. For this reason his strength and authority dominate the entire city.

Gilgamesh is also known as a king who built great walls and monumental structures. Yet his rule also brings fear to the people. The power of the king creates order in the city, but it can also oppress its people. The people of Uruk gradually began to feel that they could no longer endure his rule.


The Decision of the Gods to Restrain Gilgamesh

The people finally turn to the gods and ask for help. Their voices reach the gods. The gods look upon what is happening in the human world. They decide that a being is needed to restrain the power of Gilgamesh.

The gods decide to create another being who can stand against the king. This being will possess strength similar to Gilgamesh. Yet he will be born not in the city but in the wild. The gods resolve to send this new life into the world.


The Beginning of the Gilgamesh Story, the Birth of Enkidu

The name of that being is Enkidu. He is born in the wilderness where the fields and forests meet. Enkidu lives among the animals of the wild. He lives without knowing the rules of human society.

Yet his existence soon becomes connected with the human world. One day a hunter discovers him. The hunter tells people about what he has seen. In this way the meeting between Gilgamesh and Enkidu slowly draws near.

This meeting soon becomes the event that begins to move the entire story of Gilgamesh.

Human Story Lab is a small archive that seeks to understand humanity through the stories it has left behind. Gilgamesh is another scene in that long story.


길가메시 1화 – 우루크의 왕

길가메시는 강한 힘으로 우루크를 다스리고 신들은 그를 견제하기 위해 엔키두를 만듭니다.


길가메시 이야기는 고대 메소포타미아의 도시 우루크에서 시작됩니다. 우루크는 높은 성벽과 거대한 건축으로 알려진 도시였습니다. 당시 사람들은 그 성벽을 인류가 만든 가장 위대한 도시 구조 가운데 하나로 이야기했습니다. 그 도시의 중심에는 길가메시라는 왕이 있었습니다.


우루크의 왕 길가메시

길가메시는 우루크를 다스리던 강력한 왕으로 전해집니다. 그는 인간 가운데 가장 뛰어난 힘을 가진 존재로 이야기됩니다. 서사에서는 그를 인간이면서 동시에 신의 피를 지닌 존재로 묘사합니다. 그래서 그의 힘과 권력은 도시 전체를 압도합니다.

길가메시는 거대한 건축과 성벽을 세우는 왕으로도 알려져 있습니다. 그러나 그의 통치는 사람들에게 두려움을 주기도 합니다. 왕의 힘은 도시의 질서를 만들지만 동시에 사람들을 억누르기도 합니다. 우루크의 사람들은 점점 그 통치를 견디기 어렵다고 느끼기 시작합니다.


길가메시를 견제하려는 신들의 결정

사람들은 결국 신들에게 도움을 요청합니다. 그들의 목소리는 신들의 세계에 전해집니다. 신들은 인간 세계에서 일어나고 있는 일을 바라봅니다. 그리고 길가메시의 힘을 견제할 존재가 필요하다고 판단합니다.

신들은 왕과 맞설 수 있는 또 하나의 존재를 만들기로 합니다. 그 존재는 길가메시와 비슷한 힘을 가진 존재가 될 것입니다. 그러나 그는 도시가 아니라 자연 속에서 태어날 존재입니다. 신들은 새로운 생명을 만들어 세상에 보내기로 합니다.


길가메시 이야기의 시작, 엔키두의 탄생

그 존재의 이름은 엔키두입니다. 그는 들판과 숲이 이어지는 자연 속에서 태어납니다. 엔키두는 짐승들과 함께 먹고 함께 달리며 살아갑니다. 그는 인간 사회의 규칙을 알지 못한 채 살아갑니다.

그러나 그의 존재는 곧 인간 세계와 연결됩니다. 어느 날 한 사냥꾼이 그를 발견합니다. 사냥꾼은 그 이야기를 사람들에게 전합니다. 그렇게 길가메시와 엔키두의 만남이 서서히 가까워집니다.

이 만남은 곧 길가메시 이야기 전체를 움직이기 시작하는 사건이 됩니다.

Human Story Lab은 인류가 남긴 이야기들을 통해 인간이라는 존재를 다시 읽어보려는 작은 기록입니다. 길가메시는 그 긴 이야기의 또 하나의 장면입니다.
