Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 3 – The Journey to the Cedar Forest

Gilgamesh and Enkidu set out for the Cedar Forest to confront Humbaba and seek lasting fame.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu spend time together in Uruk and begin to recognize each other’s strength. The two heroes have now become friends and begin to consider a new undertaking together. Yet Gilgamesh still wishes to achieve something greater. He begins to think about a deed that will make his name remembered.

One day Gilgamesh speaks about the Cedar Forest beyond the distant mountains. It is said that a powerful being named Humbaba guards the forest. Enkidu knows well the danger of that place. He says that it is not a place where humans can easily enter.

The Expedition of Gilgamesh and Enkidu to the Cedar Forest

Yet Gilgamesh does not abandon his plan because of fear. He wishes to defeat Humbaba and leave his name in the world. In the end Enkidu accepts his decision. The two heroes decide to journey toward the Cedar Forest.

Gilgamesh tells the elders and the people of Uruk about his plan. The people say that the expedition will be very dangerous. They advise the two heroes to pray to the gods and prepare themselves. Gilgamesh accepts this advice and begins to prepare for the expedition.

The Expedition of Gilgamesh and the Forest of Humbaba

The Cedar Forest is known as a place beyond the distant mountains. It is said that enormous trees grow there. People speak of the forest almost as if it belongs to the world of the gods. The being who guards the forest is Humbaba.

Stories about Humbaba spread widely among the people. Tales of his appearance and strength bring fear to many people. For that reason entering the forest is considered extremely dangerous. Many people are afraid even to approach it.

The Story of Gilgamesh and the Choice of a Hero

Yet Gilgamesh decides to leave despite the danger. He knows that human life is short. For this reason he chooses to perform a deed that will leave his name remembered. His decision turns toward honor rather than fear.

At this moment the story of Gilgamesh leaves a question. Why do human beings choose great deeds even when they know the danger? Between honor and fear what kind of choice does a human being make? This question continues to appear throughout ancient stories.

길가메시 3화 – 삼나무 숲으로 향하는 길

길가메시와 엔키두는 훔바바와 맞서고 이름을 남기기 위해 삼나무 숲으로 떠납니다.

길가메시와 엔키두는 우루크에서 함께 시간을 보내며 서로의 힘을 인정합니다. 두 영웅은 이제 친구가 되었고 함께 새로운 일을 생각하기 시작합니다. 그러나 길가메시는 여전히 더 큰 일을 이루고 싶어 합니다. 그는 자신의 이름을 오래 남길 행동을 고민합니다.

어느 날 길가메시는 먼 산 너머에 있는 삼나무 숲에 대해 이야기합니다. 그 숲에는 훔바바라는 강력한 존재가 숲을 지키고 있다고 전해집니다. 엔키두는 그 숲의 위험을 잘 알고 있습니다. 그는 그곳이 인간이 쉽게 들어갈 수 없는 장소라고 말합니다.

훔바바에 대한 이야기는 사람들 사이에 널리 퍼져 있습니다. 그의 모습과 힘에 대한 이야기는 많은 사람들에게 두려움을 줍니다. 그래서 그 숲에 들어가는 일은 매우 위험한 일로 여겨집니다. 많은 사람들은 그곳에 가까이 가는 것조차 두려워합니다.

길가메시 이야기와 영웅의 선택

그러나 길가메시는 위험을 알면서도 길을 떠나기로 합니다. 그는 인간의 삶이 짧다는 사실을 잘 알고 있습니다. 그래서 그는 자신의 이름을 오래 남길 일을 선택합니다. 그의 선택은 두려움보다 명예를 향하고 있습니다.
