Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 3 – The Journey to the Cedar Forest
Gilgamesh and Enkidu leave Uruk and journey toward the Cedar Forest, choosing glory despite fear and danger.
Gilgamesh and Enkidu spend time together in Uruk and begin to recognize each other’s strength. The two heroes have now become close companions and start thinking about undertaking something greater together. Yet Gilgamesh still desires an achievement that will outlive him. He begins to think about a deed that will make his name remembered for generations.
One day Gilgamesh speaks about the Cedar Forest beyond the distant mountains. People say that a powerful being named Humbaba guards the forest. Enkidu knows well the danger of that place. He says that it is not a land where human beings can easily enter.
The Expedition of Gilgamesh and Enkidu to the Cedar Forest
Yet Gilgamesh does not abandon his plan because of fear. He wishes to defeat Humbaba and leave his name in the world. In the end Enkidu accepts his decision. The two heroes decide to journey together toward the Cedar Forest.
Gilgamesh tells the elders and the people of Uruk about his plan. The people warn that the expedition will be extremely dangerous. They advise the two heroes to pray to the gods and prepare carefully before leaving. Gilgamesh accepts their advice and begins preparing for the journey.
Weapons and equipment are gathered throughout the city. The people watch the two heroes with anxiety as they prepare to leave. The walls of Uruk still stand behind them, but Gilgamesh’s attention is already fixed beyond the city.
At last Gilgamesh and Enkidu depart from Uruk. The two heroes pass through the city gates and begin walking toward the distant mountains. Behind them remains the world of civilization, while ahead of them waits an unknown forest filled with danger.
The Forest of Humbaba and the Fear Beyond the Mountains
The Cedar Forest is known as a place that exists beyond the distant mountains. People say that enormous trees grow there without end. Many speak of the forest almost as if it belongs to the world of the gods. At the entrance of that forest stands Humbaba.
Stories about Humbaba spread widely among the people. Tales of his face, his voice, and his strength fill many with fear. Even approaching the forest is considered dangerous. Few people are willing to enter such a place.
Enkidu especially understands the terror of the forest. In his earlier life among wild animals, he heard stories about Humbaba and the forbidden land he guarded. For this reason he knows that the journey is not a simple hunt or adventure. The two heroes are walking toward a place feared even by strong men.
As they travel farther from Uruk, the land slowly changes around them. The roads become rougher, and the distant mountains appear larger with every step. The familiar world begins to disappear behind them. Ahead lies only the dark forest and the unknown presence waiting inside it.
Gilgamesh and the Choice to Leave the Safety of the City
Even so, Gilgamesh continues forward. He knows that human life is short and that death eventually reaches all people. Because of this, he chooses to seek honor instead of remaining within safety. For Gilgamesh, a remembered name is more valuable than a quiet life without achievement.
Enkidu follows beside him as the two heroes continue toward the mountains. Their friendship has now become stronger through shared purpose and shared danger. The journey no longer belongs to Gilgamesh alone. It has become a path both heroes walk together.
The story now leaves an important question. Why do human beings move toward danger even when they understand the risk before them? Why do some people leave safety behind in order to pursue something greater than themselves? These questions continue to appear throughout many ancient stories.

훔바바에 대한 이야기들은 사람들 사이에 널리 퍼져 있었습니다. 그의 얼굴과 목소리, 그리고 힘에 대한 이야기들은 수많은 사람들에게 공포를 줍니다. 숲 가까이 가는 것 자체가 위험하다고 여겨집니다. 그 장소 안으로 들어가려는 사람은 거의 없습니다.

그럼에도 길가메시는 계속 앞으로 나아갑니다. 그는 인간 삶이 짧고 결국 모든 인간에게 죽음이 찾아온다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그는 안전 속에 머무르기보다 명예를 선택합니다. 길가메시에게 기억되는 이름은 조용하고 안전한 삶보다 더 중요합니다.
엔키두는 그의 곁에서 함께 걸어갑니다. 두 영웅 우정은 이제 공통된 목적과 위험 속에서 더 강해집니다. 이 여정은 더 이상 길가메시 혼자 길이 아닙니다. 그것은 두 영웅이 함께 걷는 길이 됩니다.
이 이야기는 중요한 질문을 남깁니다. 인간은 왜 위험을 알면서도 그 방향으로 나아가는가라는 질문입니다. 왜 어떤 인간들은 안전을 뒤로한 채 자신보다 더 큰 무언가를 추구하는가라는 질문입니다. 이 질문은 수많은 고대 이야기 속에서 반복되어 나타납니다.
