Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 5 – The Anger of Ishtar

Gilgamesh rejects Ishtar, leading to the sending of the Bull of Heaven, which he and Enkidu defeat.

After defeating Humbaba in the Cedar Forest, the names of Gilgamesh and Enkidu become known across the land. Their victory shows that human strength can approach the realm of the gods. After this event Gilgamesh returns to Uruk and his fame spreads even to the realm of the gods. The news soon draws the attention of a powerful goddess.

Ishtar, the Goddess of Love and War, and Gilgamesh

Ishtar is known in Mesopotamian mythology as one of the most powerful goddesses. She represents love and war, fertility and desire at the same time. One day Ishtar looks upon Gilgamesh and takes an interest in him. She asks him to become her husband.

However Gilgamesh does not accept her proposal. He knows the fate of those whom Ishtar loved before. Many of those who were loved by the goddess eventually met unhappy endings. Gilgamesh speaks of those stories and refuses the offer of the goddess.

Gilgamesh’s Refusal and the Anger of Ishtar

The words of Gilgamesh deeply wound the pride of the goddess. It is rare for a human being to reject the love of a god. Ishtar rises in anger and ascends to the heavens. There she asks her father for revenge.

She demands that a powerful being be sent to punish Gilgamesh and the city of Uruk. That being carries the force of a destructive power sent by the gods. In the end the gods accept the request of Ishtar. The Bull of Heaven is then sent down to the world of humans.

The Bull of Heaven, the Beast Sent by the Gods

The Bull of Heaven is a symbol of destruction sent by the gods. When it descends to the earth the ground begins to split and many people fall into danger. The city of Uruk begins to tremble under this sudden disaster. At that moment Gilgamesh and Enkidu step forward once again.

The two heroes confront the Bull of Heaven together. After a fierce battle they finally defeat the creature. Yet in the world of the gods another anger begins to grow among the gods. This event becomes the beginning of a new tragedy in the story of Gilgamesh.

길가메시 5화 – 이슈타르의 분노

길가메시는 이슈타르를 거절하고 그로 인해 하늘의 황소가 내려오지만 두 사람은 그것을 쓰러뜨립니다.

삼나무 숲에서 훔바바를 쓰러뜨린 뒤 길가메시와 엔키두의 이름은 더욱 널리 알려지기 시작합니다. 그들의 승리는 인간의 힘이 신들의 영역에 가까이 다가갈 수 있다는 가능성을 보여 주었습니다. 이 사건 이후 길가메시는 우루크로 돌아오고 그의 명성은 신들의 세계에도 전해집니다. 그리고 그 소식은 한 여신의 관심을 끌게 됩니다.

사랑과 전쟁의 여신 이슈타르와 길가메시

이슈타르는 메소포타미아 신화에서 가장 강력한 여신 가운데 하나로 알려져 있습니다. 그녀는 사랑과 전쟁, 풍요와 욕망을 동시에 상징하는 존재였습니다. 어느 날 이슈타르는 길가메시를 바라보고 그에게 마음을 품게 됩니다. 그리고 길가메시에게 자신과 함께할 것을 제안합니다.

그러나 길가메시는 그 제안을 받아들이지 않습니다. 그는 이슈타르가 사랑했던 존재들의 운명을 알고 있었기 때문입니다. 여신이 사랑했던 많은 존재들은 결국 불행한 결말을 맞았습니다. 길가메시는 그 사실을 이야기하며 여신의 제안을 거절합니다.

길가메시의 거절과 이슈타르의 분노

길가메시의 말은 여신의 자존심을 크게 상하게 합니다. 인간이 신의 사랑을 거절하는 일은 매우 드문 일이었습니다. 이슈타르는 분노하며 하늘로 올라갑니다. 그리고 자신의 아버지인 신에게 복수를 요청합니다.

그녀는 길가메시와 우루크를 벌하기 위해 강력한 존재를 보내 달라고 요구합니다. 그 존재는 신들이 보내는 재앙과 같은 힘을 지니고 있었습니다. 결국 신들은 이슈타르의 요청을 받아들입니다. 그렇게 하늘의 황소가 인간 세계로 내려오게 됩니다.

신들이 보낸 괴물, 하늘의 황소

하늘의 황소는 신들이 보내는 파괴의 상징이었습니다. 그 존재가 땅에 내려오자 땅이 갈라지고 많은 사람들이 위험에 빠집니다. 우루크의 도시는 갑작스러운 재앙 속에 흔들리기 시작합니다. 그 순간 다시 길가메시와 엔키두가 나섭니다.

두 영웅은 함께 하늘의 황소와 맞서 싸웁니다. 격렬한 싸움 끝에 그들은 결국 그 괴물을 쓰러뜨립니다. 그러나 신들의 세계에서는 또 다른 분노가 일어나기 시작합니다. 이 사건은 길가메시 이야기에서 새로운 비극을 부르는 계기가 됩니다.
