Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 6 – The Death of Enkidu

Under a somber twilight sky outside the massive stone walls of Uruk, King Gilgamesh kneels in deep grief beside his dying friend, Enkidu, who lies weakened on the ground. The scene captures a heavy atmosphere of silence and loss, moving away from battle to focus on the king's first profound encounter with human mortality.

 

Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 6 – The Death of Enkidu

The gods decide that Enkidu must die, and his death confronts Gilgamesh with the reality of mortality.


After Humbaba of the Cedar Forest and the Bull of Heaven are defeated, a council of the gods begins. The repeated defeat of beings sent by the gods becomes a serious matter for them. The death of the Bull of Heaven in particular is seen as a challenge to the authority of the gods. For this reason the gods decide to make a judgment about these events.


The Judgment of the Gods after Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven

The gods gather to discuss what has happened in the human world. The killing of the beings sent by the gods by Gilgamesh and Enkidu becomes the central issue before them. Yet Gilgamesh is a king and also a figure who carries divine blood. In the end the gods decide that one of the two heroes must pay the price.

The decision turns toward Enkidu. He is a being who was born in the human world and also created by the gods. The gods decide to take away his life. In this way the fate of one hero changes through the judgment of the gods.


The Punishment of the Gods and the Illness of Enkidu

After the judgment of the gods something begins to change in the body of Enkidu. He suddenly falls ill and begins to lose his strength day by day. The warrior who once possessed great power gradually becomes weak. His body no longer carries the strength of a hero of the battlefield.

During his illness Enkidu begins to reflect on his life. He remembers the journeys he shared with Gilgamesh. The battles in the Cedar Forest and against the Bull of Heaven return to his memory. Yet he realizes that he can no longer continue that journey.


The Death of Enkidu in the Story of Gilgamesh

At last the life of Enkidu comes to an end. He spends his final moments beside Gilgamesh. The being who once lived freely in nature ends his life in the human world. His death leaves a deep shock for Gilgamesh.

This event becomes the moment that changes the direction of the entire story of Gilgamesh. For the first time Gilgamesh truly confronts the reality of human death. The death of his friend leaves him with a question about the fate of human beings. From this moment the journey of Gilgamesh begins to move in a new direction.

길가메시 6화 – 엔키두의 죽음

신들은 엔키두의 죽음을 결정하고 그 죽음은 길가메시에게 인간의 죽음을 마주하게 합니다.


삼나무 숲의 훔바바와 하늘의 황소를 쓰러뜨린 이후 신들의 세계에서는 새로운 논의가 시작됩니다. 인간이 신들이 보낸 존재들을 계속 쓰러뜨리는 일은 신들에게 큰 문제로 보였습니다. 특히 하늘의 황소의 죽음은 신들의 권위에 대한 도전처럼 보였습니다. 그래서 신들은 이 사건에 대한 판단을 내리기로 합니다.


훔바바와 하늘의 황소 이후 신들의 판단

신들은 인간 세계에서 일어난 일을 함께 논의합니다. 길가메시와 엔키두가 신들이 보낸 존재들을 죽였다는 사실이 문제로 제기됩니다. 그러나 길가메시는 왕이며 신의 피를 지닌 존재였습니다. 결국 신들은 두 영웅 가운데 한 사람이 대가를 치러야 한다고 결정합니다.

그 결정은 엔키두에게 향합니다. 그는 인간 세계에서 태어난 존재이며 신들이 만든 존재이기도 했습니다. 신들은 그의 생명을 거두기로 판단합니다. 그렇게 한 영웅의 운명이 신들의 결정 속에서 바뀌게 됩니다.


신들의 벌과 엔키두의 병

신들의 판단 이후 엔키두의 몸에 이상이 생기기 시작합니다. 그는 갑작스럽게 병에 걸리고 힘을 잃기 시작합니다. 이전까지 강력한 전사였던 그는 점점 약해집니다. 그의 몸은 더 이상 전장의 영웅의 모습이 아니게 됩니다.

병 속에서 엔키두는 자신의 삶을 돌아봅니다. 그는 길가메시와 함께 했던 모험을 떠올립니다. 삼나무 숲과 하늘의 황소와의 싸움이 그의 기억 속에 떠오릅니다. 그러나 그는 이제 그 여정을 더 이어갈 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫습니다.


길가메시 이야기에서 엔키두의 죽음

마침내 엔키두의 삶은 끝에 이르게 됩니다. 그는 길가메시의 곁에서 마지막 시간을 맞이합니다. 한때 자연에서 자유롭게 살던 존재는 인간 세계에서 생을 마칩니다. 그의 죽음은 길가메시에게 깊은 충격을 남깁니다.

이 사건은 길가메시 이야기 전체의 방향을 바꾸는 순간이 됩니다. 길가메시는 처음으로 죽음이라는 현실을 마주하게 됩니다. 친구의 죽음은 그에게 인간의 운명에 대한 질문을 남깁니다. 이 순간부터 길가메시의 여정은 새로운 방향으로 움직이기 시작합니다.
