Beneath the fading light of evening near the walls of the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk, the weakened Enkidu lies on the ground during his final moments. Beside him, Gilgamesh kneels silently, looking at his dying friend with grief and helplessness. The scene is filled not with battle or heroism, but with loss, silence, and the moment when a human being first confronts the reality of death.
Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 6 – The Death of Enkidu
After Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven die, Enkidu pays the price demanded by the gods, forcing Gilgamesh to face death.
After Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven are defeated, the gods gather together in council. The repeated destruction of beings connected to divine authority becomes a serious matter among them. In particular, the death of the Bull of Heaven is seen as a direct challenge to the authority of the gods. Because of this, the gods decide that judgment must be made.
The victories of Gilgamesh and Enkidu no longer appear as heroic achievements alone. Their actions now seem to cross the boundary separating humanity from divine power. The epic begins shifting away from heroic conquest and toward consequence and loss. The story gradually changes from triumph into tragedy.
Among the gods, the question arises of who must pay the price for these events. Gilgamesh is both a king and a figure connected to divine blood. Enkidu, however, stands in a more vulnerable position between humanity and the gods. The judgment eventually turns toward him.
This moment changes the direction of the entire epic. Until now, the two heroes have moved together through strength and adventure. Yet the story now begins confronting something greater than monsters or battle. It begins confronting mortality itself.
The Judgment of the Gods after Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven
The gods gather together to discuss what has happened in the human world. Before them stands the question of how Gilgamesh and Enkidu defeated beings sent by divine authority. The killing of Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven becomes the central issue of the council.
Yet Gilgamesh occupies a different position from ordinary human beings. He is a king and also carries divine blood within him. Because of this, the judgment does not immediately fall upon him. Instead, the gods decide that one of the two heroes must bear the punishment.
The decision turns toward Enkidu. He was created by the gods yet lives within the human world. His existence stands between nature, humanity, and divine intention. The gods decide to take away his life as the price for what has happened.
In this way, the fate of one hero changes through divine judgment. The decision reveals that even great victories may carry consequences beyond human understanding. The heroes defeated monsters, yet they could not escape the authority of the gods.
The epic therefore begins revealing another truth. Human achievement does not free human beings from limitation or death.
The Punishment of the Gods and the Illness of Enkidu
After the judgment of the gods, something begins changing within Enkidu’s body. He suddenly falls ill and slowly begins losing his strength day after day. The warrior who once fought beside Gilgamesh with overwhelming power gradually becomes weak and exhausted.
His body no longer carries the strength of a hero. The same figure who crossed forests and fought divine beasts now struggles simply to endure each passing day. The change appears irreversible. For the first time, weakness enters the lives of the two heroes.
During his illness, Enkidu begins reflecting on his life and memories. He remembers the journeys he shared with Gilgamesh, the battles within the Cedar Forest, and the victory over the Bull of Heaven. Those moments now appear distant from the condition in which he lies.
At the same time, Enkidu gradually realizes that he can no longer continue that journey. The road once shared by the two heroes is beginning to separate. Adventure and glory are replaced by silence, illness, and the approach of death.
For Gilgamesh, this change becomes deeply disturbing. Until this moment, the two heroes seemed capable of overcoming every danger together. Yet no strength or courage can stop what is now happening to Enkidu.
The epic begins showing that death is different from every enemy faced before. It cannot simply be defeated through power.
The Death of Enkidu in the Story of Gilgamesh
At last, the life of Enkidu comes to an end. He spends his final moments beside Gilgamesh. The being who once lived freely among animals and wilderness dies within the human world he eventually entered.
His death leaves Gilgamesh in profound grief and shock. For the first time, he directly confronts the reality that human beings cannot escape death forever. The loss of his closest companion becomes more than personal sorrow. It becomes a question about the fate awaiting all human beings.
Until now, Gilgamesh sought glory, victory, and a name that would endure through time. Yet Enkidu’s death reveals another reality standing beneath all human achievement. No matter how strong or heroic a person may be, death still remains.
This event changes the direction of the entire story of Gilgamesh. The epic no longer centers only on heroic deeds and conquest. From this moment forward, Gilgamesh begins searching for an answer to the problem of mortality itself.
The death of Enkidu therefore becomes the turning point that transforms the story into a deeper exploration of human existence. Through loss, Gilgamesh begins confronting the limits shared by every human being.

그의 몸은 더 이상 영웅 힘을 유지하지 못합니다. 숲을 지나고 신적 괴물들과 싸웠던 존재가 이제는 하루를 버티는 것조차 힘겨워집니다. 그 변화는 되돌릴 수 없는 것처럼 보입니다. 두 영웅 삶 안으로 처음으로 약함이 들어오기 시작합니다.
병 속에서 엔키두는 자신의 삶과 기억들을 돌아보기 시작합니다. 그는 길가메시와 함께했던 여행들, 삼나무 숲 전투, 하늘의 황소와 싸웠던 순간들을 떠올립니다. 그러나 그 모든 순간들은 이제 멀어진 세계처럼 느껴집니다.
동시에 엔키두는 더 이상 그 여정을 계속할 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫기 시작합니다. 함께 걸어왔던 두 영웅 길은 이제 갈라지기 시작합니다. 모험과 영광 자리에는 침묵과 병, 그리고 죽음이 들어섭니다.
길가메시에게 이 변화는 깊은 충격이 됩니다. 지금까지 두 영웅은 함께라면 모든 위험을 극복할 수 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 이제 어떤 힘과 용기도 엔키두에게 일어나는 일을 멈추지 못합니다.
서사시는 여기서 죽음이 이전 모든 적들과는 다른 존재임을 보여 주기 시작합니다. 죽음은 단순한 힘으로 쓰러뜨릴 수 없는 존재입니다.
