Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 9 – The Return to Uruk

Gilgamesh loses the plant of youth and returns to Uruk, understanding the limits of human life.

After hearing the story of human destiny from Utnapishtim, Gilgamesh prepares to return home. He had begun his long journey to ask whether a human could overcome death. At the end of that journey, however, he receives an unexpected answer. Now Gilgamesh begins his return to the city of Uruk.

The Plant of Youth Revealed by Utnapishtim

Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh one final secret. Deep beneath the waters there is a plant that can restore youth. This plant has the power to restore youth to those who eat it. Gilgamesh decides to search for it.

He dives into the deep waters and finally finds the plant. Gilgamesh plans to take it back to Uruk and share it with the people of the city. He believes the plant may give humans another chance. Carrying the plant, he begins the journey home.

The Snake That Takes the Plant of Immortality

During the long journey, Gilgamesh stops beside a pool of water to rest. He places the plant nearby and enters the water to wash himself. While he is away, a snake approaches the plant. Drawn by its scent, the snake moves closer.

The snake takes the plant and disappears. After eating it, the snake sheds its skin. The act becomes a symbol of renewed life. Gilgamesh watches and realizes that the final chance has been taken from him.

The Walls of Uruk and the Meaning of Human Life

Gilgamesh finally returns to Uruk with empty hands. He no longer searches for a way to escape death. Instead he looks at the city he built and the life he has lived. The great walls of Uruk still stand before him.

Gilgamesh begins to understand what humans can truly leave behind. Humans cannot live forever, but they can leave traces of their lives. Cities, stories, and memories remain after them. In this way the story of Gilgamesh becomes a reflection on the meaning of human life.

길가메시 9화 – 우루크로 돌아온 길가메시

길가메시는 젊음을 되돌리는 식물을 잃고 우루크로 돌아와 인간의 한계를 깨닫습니다.

길가메시는 우트나피쉬팀에게서 인간의 운명에 관한 이야기를 듣고 돌아갈 준비를 합니다. 그는 인간이 죽음을 넘어설 수 있는지 묻기 위해 먼 여행을 떠났습니다. 그러나 그 여정의 끝에서 그는 예상과 다른 답을 얻게 됩니다. 이제 길가메시는 다시 자신의 도시 우루크로 돌아가게 됩니다.

우트나피쉬팀이 알려 준 불멸의 식물

우트나피쉬팀은 길가메시에게 한 가지 마지막 이야기를 전합니다. 바다 깊은 곳에는 젊음을 되돌리는 식물이 있다고 말합니다. 그것은 인간에게 다시 젊음을 주는 특별한 식물입니다. 길가메시는 그 말을 듣고 다시 바다로 향합니다.

그는 깊은 물속으로 내려가 마침내 그 식물을 찾아냅니다. 길가메시는 그것을 우루크로 가져가 사람들과 나누려고 합니다. 그는 그 식물이 인간에게 새로운 기회를 줄 수 있다고 생각합니다. 그렇게 길가메시는 식물을 가지고 돌아가는 길에 오릅니다.

뱀이 가져간 불멸의 식물

길가메시는 긴 여행 끝에 잠시 쉬기 위해 물가에 멈춥니다. 그는 식물을 곁에 두고 잠시 몸을 씻기 위해 물속으로 들어갑니다. 그 사이에 한 마리 뱀이 다가옵니다. 뱀은 그 식물의 향기를 맡고 가까이 다가옵니다.

결국 뱀은 그 식물을 물고 사라집니다. 뱀은 그 식물을 먹고 곧바로 허물을 벗습니다. 그 모습은 젊음을 다시 얻는 것처럼 보입니다. 길가메시는 그 장면을 바라보며 자신이 마지막 기회를 잃었다는 사실을 깨닫습니다.

우루크의 성벽과 인간의 삶의 의미

길가메시는 결국 빈손으로 우루크로 돌아옵니다. 그는 더 이상 죽음을 피할 방법을 찾지 않습니다. 대신 그는 자신이 살아온 삶과 자신이 만든 도시를 바라봅니다. 우루크의 성벽은 여전히 그 자리에 서 있습니다.

길가메시는 인간이 남길 수 있는 것이 무엇인지 생각합니다. 인간은 영원히 살 수 없지만 자신의 삶을 통해 무언가를 남길 수 있습니다. 도시와 이야기, 그리고 기억이 그것입니다. 길가메시의 이야기는 그렇게 인간의 삶을 바라보는 또 하나의 질문으로 남습니다.
