Before him rise the immense walls and ziggurats of the ancient Mesopotamian city of Uruk as Gilgamesh returns at the end of his long journey. Standing alone in the foreground dressed as a weary traveler, he gazes silently at the city he once ruled. Though his hands are empty, the towering walls of Uruk remain behind him as a symbol of what human beings can leave behind beyond death and time.
Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 9 – The Return to Uruk
After losing the chance for immortality, Gilgamesh returns to Uruk and begins to understand what human beings can truly leave behind.
After hearing the truth about human destiny from Utnapishtim, Gilgamesh prepares to return home. He had crossed the world searching for a way to overcome death and escape human limitation. Yet at the end of that journey, he receives an answer very different from the one he expected.
The meeting with Utnapishtim changes the meaning of Gilgamesh’s journey itself. Immortality no longer appears as something a human being can simply seize through strength or determination. Instead, Gilgamesh begins to understand that mortality is inseparable from human existence itself.
Even so, one final possibility still remains before him. Utnapishtim reveals the existence of a mysterious plant hidden beneath the waters, a plant said to restore youth. Hearing this, Gilgamesh gains one last hope that human beings might still resist aging and death.
The final stage of the epic therefore becomes not a story of conquest, but a story of acceptance and understanding. Gilgamesh moves toward a realization that changes how he sees both himself and humanity.
The Plant of Youth Revealed by Utnapishtim
Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh one final secret before he departs. Deep beneath the waters grows a plant with the power to restore youth to those who eat it. Though it does not grant complete immortality, it can return lost youth and vitality.
Gilgamesh immediately decides to search for the plant. He dives into the deep waters and struggles through danger until he finally finds it. The plant becomes the final hope remaining at the end of his long journey.
Unlike before, Gilgamesh no longer seeks the plant only for himself. He plans to bring it back to Uruk and share it with the people of the city. He believes that perhaps human beings may still be given another chance against aging and death.
Carrying the plant with him, Gilgamesh begins the long journey home. For a brief moment, it appears that he may truly return with something capable of changing human fate itself.
Yet the epic has not yet reached its final lesson.
The Snake That Takes the Plant of Immortality
During the long return journey, Gilgamesh stops beside a pool of water to rest. Exhausted from travel, he places the plant nearby and enters the water to wash himself. For a short moment, his attention turns away from the treasure he struggled so hard to obtain.
While he is away, a snake approaches the plant. Drawn by its scent, the creature slowly moves closer until it reaches the plant itself. Before Gilgamesh can stop it, the snake takes the plant and disappears.
After eating the plant, the snake sheds its skin and renews itself. The act becomes a powerful symbol of renewal and transformation. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh realizes that the final chance he carried has now been lost forever.
This moment reveals another truth within the epic. Human beings may seek immortality, but life continues moving according to forces beyond their control. The answer Gilgamesh pursued slips away at the very moment he believes he has finally reached it.
The loss of the plant marks the end of Gilgamesh’s search for eternal life. He can no longer believe that human beings can completely escape mortality.
The Walls of Uruk and the Meaning of Human Life
At last, Gilgamesh returns to Uruk empty-handed. He does not bring back immortality or eternal youth. Instead, he returns with a different understanding of what human life truly means.
Standing before the great walls of Uruk, Gilgamesh looks upon the city he helped build. The walls still stand strong despite the passing of time. In that moment, he begins to understand what human beings are actually capable of leaving behind.
Humans cannot live forever as individuals. Yet they can leave traces of their existence through cities, stories, memory, and the works they create. Mortality remains unavoidable, but human life can still continue through what it leaves behind in the world.
The meaning of the epic therefore changes completely at its conclusion. Gilgamesh began his journey trying to escape death itself. In the end, however, he comes to understand that being human does not mean defeating mortality. It means creating something that endures despite mortality.
The story of Gilgamesh ultimately becomes one of humanity’s oldest reflections on death, memory, and legacy. Human beings cannot stop time, but they can leave behind signs that they once existed within it.

이제 길가메시는 더 이상 자기 자신만을 위해 식물을 원하지 않습니다. 그는 그것을 우루크로 가져가 도시 사람들과 나누고자 합니다. 인간에게도 다시 한번 기회가 주어질 수 있다고 믿기 때문입니다.
식물을 들고 길가메시는 귀향 길에 오릅니다. 잠시 동안 그는 인간 운명 자체를 바꿀 수 있는 무언가를 정말 손에 넣은 것처럼 보입니다.
그러나 서사시는 아직 마지막 교훈에 도달하지 않았습니다.
뱀이 가져간 불멸의 식물
긴 귀향 길 도중 길가메시는 물가 곁에서 잠시 쉬게 됩니다. 긴 여행에 지친 그는 식물을 곁에 내려놓고 몸을 씻기 위해 물속으로 들어갑니다. 잠깐 동안 그의 시선은 어렵게 얻은 식물에서 멀어집니다.
그 사이 한 마리 뱀이 식물 가까이 다가옵니다. 식물 냄새에 이끌린 뱀은 천천히 접근해 결국 그것을 가져가 버립니다. 길가메시가 막기도 전에 뱀은 식물을 물고 사라집니다.
식물을 먹은 뒤 뱀은 허물을 벗으며 새롭게 변합니다. 그 장면은 재생과 변화 상징이 됩니다. 반면 길가메시는 자신이 붙잡고 있던 마지막 기회를 영원히 잃었다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다.
이 순간은 작품 안 또 다른 진실을 드러냅니다. 인간은 영생을 갈망하지만 삶은 인간 통제를 넘어서는 힘 안에서 계속 움직인다는 사실입니다. 길가메시가 끝내 손에 넣었다고 믿었던 답은 바로 그 순간 사라져 버립니다.
식물을 잃은 사건은 길가메시 영원한 생명 탐색 끝을 의미합니다. 그는 이제 인간이 완전히 죽음을 벗어날 수 있다고 믿지 않게 됩니다.
우루크의 성벽과 인간 삶의 의미
마침내 길가메시는 빈손으로 우루크에 돌아옵니다. 그는 영생도 영원한 젊음도 가져오지 못했습니다. 대신 그는 인간 삶 의미에 대한 전혀 다른 이해를 가지고 돌아옵니다.
우루크 거대한 성벽 앞에 선 길가메시는 자신이 세우는 데 기여했던 도시를 바라봅니다. 성벽은 시간이 지나도 여전히 굳건히 서 있습니다. 그 순간 그는 인간이 실제로 무엇을 남길 수 있는지를 이해하기 시작합니다.
인간은 개인으로서 영원히 살아갈 수 없습니다. 그러나 도시와 이야기, 기억과 자신이 만든 것들을 통해 존재 흔적을 남길 수 있습니다. 죽음은 피할 수 없지만 인간 삶은 자신이 남긴 것들 안에서 계속 이어질 수 있습니다.
따라서 작품 마지막 의미는 완전히 달라집니다. 길가메시는 처음에는 죽음 자체를 벗어나기 위해 길을 떠났습니다. 그러나 마지막에 그는 인간다움이 죽음을 이기는 데 있는 것이 아니라 죽음 속에서도 남길 것을 만드는 데 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다.
길가메시 이야기는 결국 죽음과 기억, 그리고 인간 흔적에 대한 가장 오래된 성찰 가운데 하나가 됩니다. 인간은 시간을 멈출 수 없지만 그 안에 자신이 존재했다는 흔적은 남길 수 있습니다.
