In the distant waters behind them, the shadow of a massive ark appears faintly beneath the dark horizon. The scene captures the moment when Gilgamesh first hears the story of the great flood and begins confronting the limits of human existence and mortality.
Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 8 – The Secret of the Flood
Gilgamesh reaches Utnapishtim and hears the story of the great flood, confronting the limits of human beings before time, sleep, and death.
After a long journey, Gilgamesh finally reaches Utnapishtim. He is known as the only human being who received eternal life from the gods. Gilgamesh has crossed mountains, deserts, and the boundaries of the human world in order to meet him. Now, at the edge of the world, he seeks an answer to whether human beings can overcome death.
The meeting with Utnapishtim changes the story once again. Until this moment, Gilgamesh has traveled with the hope that immortality might still be attainable. Yet the ancient survivor before him carries knowledge connected not only to life without death, but also to destruction, time, and the limits of humanity itself.
What Gilgamesh hears is not simply a secret about immortality. Instead, he hears the story of a world once destroyed by the gods through a great flood. The epic begins connecting human mortality with larger cosmic forces beyond human control. The question of death becomes inseparable from the question of what it means to be human before the power of the gods and time itself.
From this point onward, Gilgamesh’s journey moves toward a different understanding. The answer he seeks may not be victory over death itself, but understanding the limits placed upon human existence.
The Flood Sent by the Gods and the Story of Utnapishtim
Utnapishtim explains that long ago the gods decided to destroy the human world. They planned to erase all life through an enormous flood. Human beings had become something the gods no longer wished to tolerate, and destruction was chosen as the answer.
However, the god Ea secretly warned Utnapishtim about what was coming. Through this hidden message, he was told to build a great boat before the flood arrived. Utnapishtim obeyed the warning and began preparing for the disaster.
When the boat was completed, he brought his family and many living creatures inside. Soon afterward, the sky opened and rain began falling across the world. Rivers and seas rose together, and the land gradually disappeared beneath the floodwaters.
The flood destroys nearly all life in the human world. When the waters finally recede, very few living beings remain alive. Utnapishtim survives because he followed the warning given by the gods. Through this event, he becomes the one human being allowed to continue beyond ordinary mortality.
The story of the flood reveals another structure within the epic. Human life exists within forces far larger than human understanding or power. Even entire civilizations can disappear before the will of the gods and the movement of time.
The Test of Immortality Given by Utnapishtim to Gilgamesh
After telling the story, Utnapishtim gives Gilgamesh a test. He explains that if a human being truly wishes to overcome death, he must first overcome sleep. Sleep becomes a symbol of human limitation and weakness.
For this reason, Utnapishtim asks Gilgamesh to remain awake for many days without rest. The test is meant to reveal whether a human being can truly move beyond ordinary human conditions. Immortality cannot belong to someone unable to defeat even sleep.
However, Gilgamesh is already exhausted from his long journey across the world. As he sits upon a rock, sleep slowly overtakes him. He cannot resist it no matter how strongly he desires to remain awake.
Sleep falls over him almost like fate itself. The test ends nearly as soon as it begins. Gilgamesh fails before he can even truly attempt to overcome the challenge placed before him.
The scene reveals an important truth within the story. Human beings seek to overcome death, yet they cannot even fully overcome exhaustion, sleep, and the weakness of the body. Mortality is connected to the entire structure of human existence itself.
The Human Limit That Gilgamesh Begins to Understand
While Gilgamesh sleeps, Utnapishtim asks his wife to place a loaf of bread beside him each day. Every day she bakes a new loaf in order to mark the passage of time. As the days continue, the earlier loaves gradually become hard and begin to decay.
When Gilgamesh finally awakens, the loaves stand as proof that many days have passed while he slept. Time continued moving even while he remained unconscious. The bread reveals something that cannot be denied: human beings cannot stop time itself.
At that moment, Gilgamesh begins to understand another limit placed upon human life. There are boundaries that strength, kingship, and heroic achievement cannot cross. Human beings cannot escape mortality through force alone.
His long journey therefore leads not toward immortality itself, but toward understanding. The answer he discovers is painful, yet it changes him. Human beings may seek eternal life, but they still exist within time, weakness, and death.
The story of Gilgamesh now moves closer toward its final realization. The search for immortality gradually becomes a search for what human beings can still create and leave behind despite mortality.

대홍수는 인간 세계 거의 모든 생명을 파괴합니다. 물이 물러난 뒤 살아남은 존재는 거의 남지 않습니다. 우트나피쉬팀은 신들 경고를 따랐기 때문에 살아남을 수 있었습니다. 그리고 그 사건 이후 그는 죽음을 넘어선 유일한 인간이 됩니다.
대홍수 이야기는 작품 안 또 다른 구조를 드러냅니다. 인간 삶은 인간 힘과 이해를 훨씬 넘어서는 거대한 질서 안에 존재한다는 사실입니다. 문명 전체조차 신들 의지와 시간 흐름 앞에서는 사라질 수 있습니다.
우트나피쉬팀이 길가메시에게 내린 영생의 시험
이야기를 마친 뒤 우트나피쉬팀은 길가메시에게 하나 시험을 제안합니다. 그는 인간이 정말 죽음을 넘어설 수 있으려면 먼저 잠부터 이겨야 한다고 말합니다. 잠은 인간 약함과 한계를 상징하는 존재가 됩니다.
그래서 우트나피쉬팀은 길가메시에게 여러 날 동안 잠들지 말라고 요구합니다. 이 시험은 인간이 정말 인간 조건을 넘어설 수 있는 존재인가를 확인하기 위한 것입니다. 잠조차 이겨내지 못하는 존재에게 영생은 허락될 수 없습니다.
그러나 길가메시는 긴 여행으로 이미 완전히 지쳐 있는 상태입니다. 그는 바위 위에 앉아 있다가 천천히 잠에 빠져들기 시작합니다. 아무리 버티려 해도 잠을 이겨낼 수 없습니다.
잠은 마치 피할 수 없는 운명처럼 그를 덮칩니다. 시험은 제대로 시작되기도 전에 끝나 버립니다. 길가메시는 도전 자체를 넘어서기 전에 이미 실패하게 됩니다.
이 장면은 작품 안 중요한 진실 하나를 드러냅니다. 인간은 죽음을 넘어설 길을 찾으려 하지만, 실제로는 잠과 피로, 육체 약함조차 완전히 이겨내지 못하는 존재라는 사실입니다. 죽음은 인간 존재 전체 구조와 연결되어 있습니다.
길가메시가 깨닫게 되는 인간 한계
길가메시가 잠든 동안 우트나피쉬팀은 아내에게 매일 빵 하나씩을 그의 곁에 놓으라고 말합니다. 그녀는 하루가 지날 때마다 새로운 빵을 굽습니다. 시간이 지나면서 먼저 놓였던 빵들은 점점 굳고 썩어 가기 시작합니다.
길가메시가 마침내 깨어났을 때, 빵들은 그가 얼마나 오랫동안 잠들어 있었는지를 증명하고 있습니다. 그가 의식을 잃고 있는 동안에도 시간은 계속 흘러갔습니다. 빵은 부정할 수 없는 사실 하나를 보여 줍니다. 인간은 시간 자체를 멈출 수 없다는 사실입니다.
