Epic of Gilgamesh, Episode 8 – The Secret of the Flood

Gilgamesh meets Utnapishtim, learns the story of the flood, and fails the test of overcoming sleep.

After a long journey, Gilgamesh finally reaches Utnapishtim. He is known as the only human who received eternal life from the gods. Gilgamesh has come to ask whether a human can overcome death. At the edge of the world, he now hears an ancient story.

The Flood Sent by the Gods and the Story of Utnapishtim

Utnapishtim explains that long ago the gods decided to destroy the human world. They planned to wipe out all life with a great flood. However, the god Ea secretly warned Utnapishtim about the plan. Following this message, he began to build a great boat.

When the boat was finished, he brought his family and many living creatures inside. Soon the sky opened and a great rain began to fall. Rivers and seas joined together and the land disappeared under water. After the flood ended, very few living beings remained.

The Test of Immortality Given by Utnapishtim to Gilgamesh

Utnapishtim gives Gilgamesh a test. He says that if a human can overcome death, he must first overcome sleep. For this reason he asks Gilgamesh to remain awake for many days. The test is meant to reveal the limits of human life.

However, Gilgamesh is already exhausted from his long journey. As he sits on a rock, sleep slowly takes him. Sleep falls over him like an unavoidable fate. The test ends almost as soon as it begins.

The Human Limit That Gilgamesh Begins to Understand

Utnapishtim asks his wife to place a loaf of bread beside Gilgamesh each day while he sleeps. Each day she bakes a new loaf to mark the passing of time. As the days pass, the earlier loaves grow hard and begin to decay. They prove that Gilgamesh has been asleep for many days. They also show that human beings cannot overcome time.

At that moment Gilgamesh begins to understand the limits of human life. There are boundaries that even strength and power cannot cross. Human beings cannot escape mortality. His long journey now leads him toward another realization.

길가메시 8화 – 대홍수의 비밀

길가메시는 우트나피쉬팀을 만나 대홍수 이야기를 듣고 잠을 이기지 못해 시험에 실패합니다.

길가메시는 긴 여행 끝에 마침내 우트나피쉬팀을 찾아갑니다. 그는 신들에게서 영원한 생명을 받은 유일한 인간으로 알려져 있습니다. 길가메시는 인간이 죽음을 넘어설 수 있는 방법이 있는지 묻기 위해 그를 찾아온 것입니다. 이제 그는 인간 세계의 끝에서 오래된 이야기를 듣게 됩니다.

신들이 일으킨 대홍수와 우트나피쉬팀의 이야기

우트나피쉬팀은 오래전 신들이 인간 세계를 멸망시키기로 결정했다고 말합니다. 신들은 거대한 홍수를 일으켜 모든 생명을 쓸어버리려 했습니다. 그러나 지혜의 신 에아는 그 계획을 우트나피쉬팀에게 몰래 알려 줍니다. 그는 신의 말을 따라 거대한 배를 만들기 시작합니다.

배가 완성되자 그는 가족과 여러 생명들을 배에 태웁니다. 곧 하늘에서 거대한 비가 쏟아지고 세상은 물에 잠기기 시작합니다. 강과 바다가 하나가 되며 땅의 모든 것이 사라집니다. 홍수가 끝난 뒤 살아남은 존재는 거의 남지 않습니다.

우트나피쉬팀이 길가메시에게 내린 영생의 시험

우트나피쉬팀은 길가메시에게 한 가지 시험을 제시합니다. 만약 인간이 죽음을 이길 수 있다면 그것은 인간이 잠을 이길 수 있을 때일 것이라고 말합니다. 그래서 그는 길가메시에게 잠들지 않고 버텨 보라고 말합니다. 그 시험은 인간의 한계를 확인하는 시험이었습니다.

그러나 길가메시는 긴 여행과 고된 길을 지나 이미 지쳐 있었습니다. 그는 바위에 앉은 채 잠들어 버립니다. 잠은 곧 인간이 피할 수 없는 운명처럼 그를 덮칩니다. 그렇게 시험은 시작되자마자 끝나 버립니다.

길가메시가 깨닫게 되는 인간의 한계

우트나피쉬팀은 길가메시가 잠든 동안 그의 머리 곁에 빵을 하나씩 놓게 합니다. 그의 아내는 하루에 하나씩 빵을 구워 시간이 흐르는 것을 기록합니다. 날이 지나면서 먼저 놓인 빵들은 점점 굳고 썩기 시작합니다. 그것은 길가메시가 여러 날 동안 잠들어 있었다는 증거였습니다. 또한 그것은 인간이 시간을 이길 수 없다는 증거였습니다.

이 순간 길가메시는 인간의 한계를 조금씩 이해하기 시작합니다. 힘과 권력으로도 넘어설 수 없는 경계가 있다는 사실입니다. 인간은 결국 죽음을 피할 수 없는 존재입니다. 길가메시의 긴 여정은 이제 또 다른 질문으로 이어지게 됩니다.
