Across the vast plain of Kurukshetra, two enormous armies stand facing one another beneath a tense and silent sky. On one side, the army of the Pandava brothers waits with chariots, horses, elephants, and ranks of warriors prepared for battle. Opposite them stands the army of the Kaurava brothers arranged in equally massive formations. At the center of the battlefield rests Arjuna’s chariot. Arjuna stands upon it holding his bow while Krishna, serving as his charioteer, looks calmly across the field ahead. The entire scene captures the heavy silence and tension of the final moment before the greatest war of the Mahabharata begins.
Mahabharata Episode 5 – The Beginning of the Kurukshetra War
After every attempt at peace fails, the Pandavas and Kauravas finally stand before one another at Kurukshetra as war becomes unavoidable.
The long conflict within the Kuru dynasty finally reaches the point where it can no longer be stopped. Years of rivalry, humiliation, exile, and failed negotiation now lead directly toward open war. The Pandava and Kaurava families stand before the final consequences of their choices. Diplomacy has collapsed, and both sides begin gathering armies from across India. Kings, warriors, and entire kingdoms must now decide which side they will support. In this way the war of Kurukshetra begins.
The Gathering of Two Armies
Across the wide plain of Kurukshetra, two enormous armies gather and stand facing one another. On one side are the forces of the Pandava brothers, supported by kings and warriors who believe their cause is just. On the opposite side stand the armies of the Kaurava brothers, determined to defend their own power and rule.
The battlefield becomes filled with some of the greatest warriors of the age. On the Pandava side stand fighters such as Bhima and Arjuna, both feared for their strength and skill. On the Kaurava side are commanders like Bhishma and Drona, legendary warriors respected throughout the kingdoms of India.
What makes the war even more tragic is that the armies are not made of strangers alone. Teachers and students, relatives and friends, former allies and family members now stand on opposite sides of the battlefield. The conflict is no longer simply political. It has become a war dividing an entire family against itself.
As banners rise above the armies and war drums echo across the plain, the scale of the coming destruction becomes clear. The rivalry that once began among princes inside a palace has now expanded into a war involving countless lives and kingdoms.
Arjuna Before the War
Just before the battle begins, Arjuna stands upon his chariot and looks across the field of Kurukshetra. Before him he sees teachers who once guided him, relatives connected to his family, and companions he once respected and fought beside. The people standing across from him are not distant enemies but individuals tied to his own life and memory.
Although Arjuna holds his bow in his hands, his resolve begins to weaken. Faced with the reality of killing those closest to him, he becomes filled with doubt and sorrow. The war that once seemed necessary suddenly appears unbearable when he sees the human cost standing before him.
Arjuna speaks openly about these doubts to Krishna, who serves as the driver of his chariot. He questions whether victory can truly justify a war that will destroy families, kingdoms, and generations of human lives. Thinking about the suffering that lies ahead, he hesitates to continue fighting.
This moment becomes one of the most important scenes in the Mahabharata. Before the first arrows are released, the story pauses to ask whether duty alone is enough to justify violence and destruction. Arjuna’s hesitation reveals the moral weight carried by the war itself.
The First Day of War
At last the moment of battle arrives. Horns and conch shells sound across the plain as the two armies begin to move toward one another. Chariots roll forward while horses and elephants advance into combat beneath clouds of dust and noise. Kurukshetra quickly transforms into a vast battlefield filled with chaos and violence.
From the very first day, many warriors fall in battle. Both armies fight fiercely while suffering heavy losses across the field. The conflict that once existed as rivalry and anger within the royal family is now written directly into blood and death.
The scale of the war rapidly becomes enormous. Every clash between warriors carries not only personal hatred but also the weight of duty, loyalty, revenge, and survival. The battlefield becomes a place where human ambition and moral conflict collide without restraint.
In this way the war of Kurukshetra truly begins. The long path that started with rivalry among princes has now become one of the greatest wars in epic tradition. The destruction that Krishna tried to prevent has finally arrived upon the battlefield.

마하바라타 5화 – 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁의 시작
오랜 갈등 끝에 판다바와 카우라바는 마침내 쿠루크셰트라 평원에서 서로를 향해 전쟁을 시작하게 됩니다.
쿠루 왕조 안에서 오랫동안 이어졌던 갈등은 마침내 멈출 수 없는 단계에 도달하게 됩니다. 경쟁과 질투, 모욕과 유배, 그리고 실패한 협상들은 결국 전쟁이라는 결과로 이어지게 됩니다. 판다바와 카우라바 형제들은 이제 자신들의 선택이 가져올 마지막 결과 앞에 서게 됩니다. 외교와 협상은 모두 무너졌고, 양쪽은 인도 전역에서 군대를 모으기 시작합니다. 왕들과 전사들, 수많은 왕국들은 이제 어느 편에 설 것인지를 결정해야 했습니다. 이렇게 해서 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁이 시작됩니다.
두 군대의 집결

전쟁 앞의 아르주나
전투가 시작되기 직전 아르주나는 자신의 전차 위에 서서 쿠루크셰트라의 전장을 바라봅니다. 그의 눈앞에는 자신을 가르쳤던 스승들과 친척들, 과거 함께 싸우고 살아왔던 사람들이 서 있습니다. 지금 마주한 이들은 단순한 적군이 아니라 자신의 삶과 기억 속에 연결된 사람들이었습니다.
활을 손에 쥐고 있었지만 아르주나의 마음은 점점 흔들리기 시작합니다. 가장 가까웠던 사람들을 죽여야 한다는 현실 앞에서 그는 깊은 슬픔과 혼란에 빠지게 됩니다. 전쟁은 정의를 위한 싸움처럼 보였지만, 눈앞에 있는 인간적인 고통은 그 모든 확신을 흔들고 있었습니다.
아르주나는 전차를 모는 크리슈나에게 자신의 고민을 털어놓습니다. 그는 이 전쟁이 수많은 가족과 왕국, 여러 세대의 삶을 파괴하게 될 것이라고 말합니다. 승리가 정말 이런 파괴를 정당화할 수 있는가라는 질문이 그의 마음 안에서 커지기 시작합니다.

전쟁 첫날부터 수많은 전사들이 쓰러지게 됩니다. 양쪽 군대는 거센 싸움을 벌이며 큰 피해를 입습니다. 오랫동안 왕가 내부에 쌓여 있던 갈등과 분노는 이제 피와 죽음의 형태로 전장 위에 드러나기 시작합니다.
전쟁의 규모는 빠르게 커져 갑니다. 각각의 충돌 안에는 단순한 증오뿐만 아니라 의무와 충성, 복수와 생존의 문제가 함께 얽혀 있었습니다. 전장은 인간의 욕망과 도덕적 갈등이 가장 거칠게 부딪히는 장소가 되어 갑니다.
이렇게 해서 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁은 본격적으로 시작됩니다. 어린 왕자들 사이의 경쟁으로 시작되었던 긴 갈등은 이제 고대 서사 가운데 가장 거대한 전쟁으로 이어지게 됩니다. 크리슈나가 막으려 했던 파괴는 결국 현실이 되어 전장 위에 펼쳐지기 시작합니다.
