Inside the vast royal court of Hastinapura, Krishna stands at the center of the hall making a final appeal for peace. One hand is raised as he speaks with calm authority and firm resolve. Across from him, Duryodhana sits upon the royal throne leaning back with a cold and unyielding expression. Beside Duryodhana stands Karna in the armor of a warrior prepared for conflict. Kings, nobles, and warriors fill both sides of the court beneath towering palace pillars, creating an atmosphere heavy with tension and uncertainty. The grand hall remains magnificent, yet the mood reveals that the final attempt to prevent war is close to failure.
Mahabharata Episode 4 – The Last Attempt to Prevent War
As the Pandavas’ exile ends, Krishna makes one final attempt to prevent war within the Kuru dynasty.
The years of exile imposed upon the Pandava brothers gradually come to an end. After spending a long period in the forest, the brothers expect that they will finally be allowed to return and reclaim part of what they lost. Yet during those years the conflict within the Kuru dynasty has only grown deeper. Distrust, humiliation, and ambition continue to divide the two sides of the royal family. The possibility of war now begins to stand directly before them. Even so, one final effort is made to prevent the destruction that is approaching. At the center of that final attempt stands Krishna.
Krishna’s Diplomacy
Before preparing for war, the Pandava brothers first seek a peaceful solution to the conflict. They understand that a war between the two branches of the Kuru dynasty will bring destruction far beyond a single kingdom. For this reason they choose negotiation before violence and send Krishna to Hastinapura as their envoy.
Krishna occupies a unique position within the world of the Mahabharata. He is connected to both sides of the royal family and is respected by many kings and warriors. Because of his wisdom and influence, the Pandavas hope that he may still be able to prevent the coming disaster.
Inside the royal court of Hastinapura, Krishna delivers the request of the Pandava brothers. Their demand is no longer for a vast kingdom or political dominance. Instead they ask only for five villages where the five brothers may live peacefully. The proposal becomes the final compromise offered in order to avoid war.
The request reveals how far the Pandavas are willing to step back in order to preserve peace. After years of exile and humiliation, they still attempt negotiation before choosing violence. Yet the atmosphere within the court already carries signs that peace may no longer be possible.
The Failed Negotiation
Duryodhana rejects Krishna’s proposal without hesitation. He refuses to allow the Pandava brothers to regain even the smallest share of political power within the Kuru world. To him, any concession appears as weakness and danger to his own authority.
As the negotiation continues, the atmosphere inside the court becomes increasingly tense. Krishna continues speaking about the destruction that war will bring upon kingdoms, families, and future generations. He warns that once war begins, countless warriors and rulers across India will be drawn into the conflict.
Many figures inside the court understand the seriousness of Krishna’s warning. Some elders and kings recognize that the rivalry within the Kuru dynasty is now threatening the stability of the entire region. Yet despite these concerns, no one succeeds in changing Duryodhana’s decision.
Duryodhana remains unmoved by every attempt at persuasion. Pride, fear, and ambition continue to shape his choices more strongly than caution or compromise. The final negotiation slowly collapses before the eyes of the assembled court.
The Moment War Becomes Unavoidable
With the failure of the negotiation, the conflict enters a stage that can no longer be reversed. Both the Pandavas and the Kauravas begin openly preparing for war. Messengers travel across kingdoms while rulers and warriors choose which side they will support in the coming battle.
The approaching conflict gradually expands beyond the Kuru dynasty itself. Many kingdoms across India become involved as alliances form around both sides. What once began as rivalry inside a royal family now grows into a war capable of transforming the political world of the entire region.
At the same time, the emotional distance between the two sides becomes impossible to repair. Years of jealousy, humiliation, anger, and distrust have accumulated beyond reconciliation. The last remaining path toward peace has now disappeared.
In this way the road toward the war of Kurukshetra finally opens completely. The long conflict that began with rivalry among princes now moves directly toward the greatest battle of the Mahabharata. The final attempt to prevent war has failed, and the story enters the stage of inevitable destruction.

마하바라타 4화 – 전쟁을 막기 위한 마지막 시도
유배가 끝난 뒤 판다바 형제들은 전쟁 대신 평화를 선택하려 했지만, 마지막 협상은 결국 실패하게 됩니다.
판다바 형제들의 긴 유배 기간은 점차 끝을 향해 가고 있었습니다. 숲 속에서 오랜 시간을 보낸 뒤 그들은 마침내 자신들의 왕국 일부를 돌려받을 수 있기를 기대하게 됩니다. 그러나 그동안 쿠루 왕조 안의 갈등은 오히려 더 깊어져 있었습니다. 질투와 굴욕, 권력에 대한 집착은 두 가문 사이의 거리를 더욱 크게 만들고 있었습니다. 이제 전쟁은 더 이상 멀리 있는 가능성이 아니라 눈앞에 다가온 현실처럼 보이기 시작합니다. 그럼에도 마지막으로 전쟁을 막기 위한 시도가 이루어집니다. 그 중심에는 크리슈나가 서 있었습니다.
크리슈나의 외교
판다바 형제들은 전쟁을 준비하기 전에 먼저 평화로운 해결을 시도합니다. 그들은 쿠루 왕조 내부의 전쟁이 단지 한 왕국만의 문제가 아니라 수많은 생명과 여러 나라를 파괴하게 될 것이라는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그들은 무력보다 협상을 먼저 선택하고, 크리슈나를 하스티나푸라로 보내게 됩니다.

협상이 계속될수록 궁정 안의 분위기는 점점 더 긴장되기 시작합니다. 크리슈나는 전쟁이 가져올 파괴와 고통을 계속 설명합니다. 그는 전쟁이 시작되면 수많은 왕들과 전사들, 여러 세대의 사람들이 모두 그 파괴 속으로 끌려 들어가게 될 것이라고 경고합니다.
궁정 안의 많은 인물들 역시 크리슈나의 말이 가진 무게를 이해하고 있었습니다. 일부 왕들과 원로들은 쿠루 왕조 내부의 갈등이 이미 전체 지역의 질서를 흔들 만큼 커졌다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그 누구도 두료다나의 결정을 바꾸지는 못합니다.
두료다나는 끝까지 자신의 생각을 바꾸지 않습니다. 자존심과 두려움, 그리고 권력에 대한 욕망은 타협과 신중함보다 훨씬 강하게 그의 행동을 지배하고 있었습니다. 결국 마지막 협상은 궁정 사람들의 눈앞에서 조금씩 무너져 가게 됩니다.
전쟁이 피할 수 없게 되는 순간
협상이 실패하면서 상황은 이제 더 이상 되돌릴 수 없는 단계로 들어가게 됩니다. 판다바와 카우라바 양쪽 모두 공개적으로 전쟁 준비를 시작합니다. 사신들은 여러 왕국으로 보내지고, 왕들과 전사들은 어느 편에 설 것인지를 선택하기 시작합니다.
다가오는 전쟁은 점점 쿠루 왕조 내부의 문제를 넘어서는 규모로 커져 갑니다. 인도의 수많은 왕국들이 양쪽 편으로 나뉘어 전쟁에 참여하게 됩니다. 처음에는 왕실 내부의 경쟁처럼 보였던 갈등은 이제 세계 전체를 흔드는 거대한 충돌로 변하고 있었습니다.
동시에 두 가문 사이의 감정적 거리 역시 더 이상 회복될 수 없는 수준에 도달하게 됩니다. 오랜 세월 쌓여 온 질투와 모욕, 분노와 불신은 이제 화해가 불가능한 상태가 되어 버렸습니다. 평화를 향한 마지막 길은 결국 완전히 사라지게 됩니다.
이렇게 해서 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁으로 향하는 길은 완전히 열리게 됩니다. 어린 왕자들 사이의 경쟁에서 시작된 긴 갈등은 이제 마하바라타 최대의 전쟁으로 직접 이어지게 됩니다. 전쟁을 막기 위한 마지막 시도는 실패했고, 이야기는 이제 거대한 파괴의 단계로 들어가게 됩니다.
