Mahabharata Episode 4 – The Last Attempt to Prevent War

Krishna’s attempt to negotiate peace fails, making war between the two families unavoidable.

The time of exile for the Pandava brothers gradually comes to an end. After many years spent in the forest, they expect that their kingdom will be returned to them. Yet the conflict within the Kuru dynasty has already become too deep. The tension between the two families is now moving toward the possibility of war. Even so, one final attempt is made to prevent the conflict. At the center of that effort stands Krishna.

Krishna’s Diplomacy

The Pandava brothers first attempt a peaceful solution. They wish to resolve the conflict through negotiation rather than war. For this reason Krishna is sent to Hastinapura as their envoy. He is a figure who holds relationships with both sides of the royal family.

In the court of the Kuru dynasty Krishna delivers the request of the Pandava brothers. Their demand is not a great kingdom. They ask only for five villages where the five brothers can live. It is the final concession offered in order to avoid war.

The Failed Negotiation

However, Duryodhana refuses this proposal. He does not want the Pandava brothers to regain power. For this reason he declares that he will not give them even a piece of land. The negotiation gradually turns into a tense confrontation.

Krishna continues to try to prevent the war until the very end. He explains to the court the destruction that such a war will bring. Many kings and warriors will be drawn into the war. Yet Duryodhana does not change his mind.

The Moment War Becomes Unavoidable

As the negotiation fails, the situation enters a stage that cannot be reversed. Both families now begin preparing their armies against one another. Kings and warriors gather to choose the side they will support. Many kingdoms across India become involved in the coming war.

In this way the path toward the war of Kurukshetra opens. The rivalry and conflict that had continued for so long finally move toward war. The last attempt for peace has failed. The story of the Mahabharata now enters the stage of the great battle.

판다바 형제들의 유배가 끝날 시간이 가까워집니다. 오랜 세월 숲에서 보낸 뒤 그들은 다시 왕국을 돌려받기를 기대합니다. 그러나 쿠루 왕가 안의 갈등은 이미 너무 깊어져 있었습니다. 두 가문 사이의 긴장은 이제 전쟁으로 이어질 가능성이 커지고 있었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 마지막까지 전쟁을 피하려는 시도가 이루어집니다. 그 시도의 중심에 서는 인물이 바로 크리슈나입니다.

크리슈나의 외교

판다바 형제들은 먼저 평화로운 해결을 시도합니다. 그들은 전쟁 대신 협상을 통해 문제를 해결하기를 원합니다. 그래서 크리슈나가 사절로 하스티나푸라로 보내집니다. 그는 두 가문 모두와 관계를 맺고 있는 인물이었습니다.

크리슈나는 쿠루 왕가의 궁정에서 판다바 형제들의 요구를 전합니다. 그 요구는 거대한 왕국이 아니었습니다. 그들은 다섯 형제가 살 수 있는 다섯 개의 마을만을 요구합니다. 전쟁을 피하기 위한 마지막 양보였습니다.

실패한 협상

그러나 두료다나는 이 제안을 받아들이지 않습니다. 그는 판다바 형제들이 다시 힘을 가지는 것을 원하지 않았습니다. 그래서 그는 단 한 조각의 땅도 내줄 수 없다고 말합니다. 협상은 점점 더 긴장된 분위기로 변해 갑니다.

크리슈나는 마지막까지 전쟁을 막으려 합니다. 그는 전쟁이 가져올 파괴를 궁정에 모인 사람들에게 설명합니다. 수많은 왕과 전사들이 이 전쟁에 참여하게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 그러나 두료다나는 마음을 바꾸지 않습니다.

전쟁을 피할 수 없는 순간

협상이 실패하면서 상황은 돌이킬 수 없는 단계로 들어갑니다. 이제 두 가문은 서로를 향해 군대를 준비하기 시작합니다. 왕과 전사들이 각자의 편에 서기 위해 모여듭니다. 인도의 여러 왕국들이 이 전쟁에 참여하게 됩니다.

이렇게 해서 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁을 향한 길이 열리게 됩니다. 오랫동안 이어져 온 경쟁과 갈등이 결국 전쟁으로 이어지게 됩니다. 평화를 위한 마지막 시도는 실패했습니다. 이제 마하바라타의 이야기는 거대한 전쟁의 단계로 들어가게 됩니다.
