Mahabharata Episode 8 – The End of the War

Duryodhana is defeated, and the war ends, leaving loss and silence instead of victory.

The war of Kurukshetra continues for a long time and takes the lives of countless warriors. Kings and heroes, teachers and students all fight against one another on the same battlefield. As the war goes on it destroys more and more of the world around it. At last the war moves toward its final moment. Only a few warriors remain on the battlefield. Among them stands Duryodhana, the last prince of the Kauravas. This moment shows how the long conflict of the Kuru dynasty finally reaches its end.

The Defeat of Duryodhana

Near the end of the war Duryodhana flees from the battlefield and hides himself in a lake. The Pandava brothers eventually find him. The final confrontation becomes a duel between Bhima and Duryodhana.

The two warriors fight with heavy maces in their hands. By this time most of the warriors on the battlefield have already fallen. Many people watch the final combat between them.

Bhima fights with the memory of a long and bitter rivalry. At last he strikes Duryodhana on the thigh. Duryodhana falls to the ground and the war finally comes to its end.

Silence After the War

After the war the battlefield falls into deep silence. Many kings and warriors have lost their lives there. The two branches of the Kuru dynasty are almost completely destroyed.

The Pandava brothers win the war but the victory does not bring joy. Among the fallen are their teachers, relatives, and friends.

A kingdom can be rebuilt, but those who have died cannot return. What remains after the war is not triumph but a deep sense of loss.

The Sorrow After Victory

After the war Yudhishthira becomes king, yet he carries deep sorrow in his heart. He continues to ask himself whether the war was truly the right choice.

Many sages tell him that he must rebuild the kingdom and rule as a just king. Even so the memory of the war does not easily disappear.

Through this moment the Mahabharata leaves an enduring question. Human beings may fight for justice, but how should they live with the consequences of that struggle.

마하바라타 8화 – 전쟁의 끝

두료다나는 패배하고 전쟁은 끝나지만 승리 대신 상실과 침묵이 남습니다.

쿠루크셰트라 전쟁은 오랜 시간 계속되며 수많은 전사들의 목숨을 앗아갑니다. 왕과 영웅, 스승과 제자들이 같은 전장에서 서로를 향해 싸우게 됩니다. 전쟁은 점점 더 많은 것을 파괴하며 끝을 향해 나아갑니다. 마침내 전장의 중심에 남은 것은 몇 명의 전사뿐입니다. 그 가운데에는 카우라바의 마지막 왕자 두료다나가 있습니다. 이 장면은 쿠루 왕가의 갈등이 어떻게 끝에 이르게 되는지를 보여 줍니다.

두료다나의 패배

전쟁이 거의 끝나갈 무렵 두료다나는 전장에서 도망쳐 호수 속에 몸을 숨깁니다. 그러나 판다바 형제들은 결국 그를 찾아냅니다. 마지막 싸움은 비마와 두료다나 사이의 결투로 이어집니다.

두 전사는 거대한 철퇴를 들고 서로를 향해 싸웁니다. 전장은 이미 대부분의 전사들이 쓰러진 뒤였습니다. 많은 사람들이 이 싸움을 지켜보고 있었습니다.

비마는 오랜 원한을 품고 두료다나와 싸웁니다. 결국 그는 두료다나의 허리를 공격합니다. 두료다나는 땅에 쓰러지고 전쟁은 사실상 끝나게 됩니다.

전쟁 이후의 침묵

전쟁이 끝난 뒤 전장은 깊은 침묵에 잠깁니다. 수많은 왕과 전사들이 그곳에서 목숨을 잃었습니다. 쿠루 왕가의 두 가문은 거의 모두 사라지게 됩니다.

판다바 형제들은 전쟁에서 승리하지만 그 승리는 기쁨으로 이어지지 않습니다. 전장에서 쓰러진 사람들 가운데에는 스승과 친척, 친구들이 있었습니다.

왕국은 다시 세워질 수 있지만 잃어버린 사람들은 돌아오지 않습니다. 전쟁이 남긴 것은 승리보다도 깊은 상실이었습니다.

승리 이후의 슬픔

전쟁이 끝난 뒤 유디슈티라는 왕이 되지만 마음속에는 큰 슬픔이 남습니다. 그는 이 전쟁이 정말로 옳은 선택이었는지를 계속 생각합니다.

많은 현자들은 그에게 왕으로서 나라를 다시 세워야 한다고 말합니다. 그러나 전쟁의 기억은 쉽게 사라지지 않습니다.

마하바라타는 이 장면을 통해 중요한 질문을 남깁니다. 인간은 정의를 위해 싸울 수 있지만 그 싸움의 결과를 어떻게 받아들여야 하는가라는 질문입니다.
