Mahabharata Episode 8 – The End of the War

 

After the end of the Kurukshetra war, the battlefield lies silent beneath the red light of sunset. Broken chariots, shattered weapons, and fallen banners are scattered across the vast plain. At the center of the field, Duryodhana lies defeated upon the ground while Bhima stands nearby holding his heavy mace after the final duel. In the distance, the Pandava brothers and a few surviving warriors watch the scene in silence. The battle has already ended, and the atmosphere is filled not with triumph but with exhaustion, loss, and tragedy. Dust and fading light emphasize the emptiness left behind after the destruction of war.

Mahabharata Episode 8 – The End of the War

After countless deaths and years of conflict, the war of Kurukshetra finally comes to an end, leaving behind victory mixed with irreversible loss.

The war of Kurukshetra continues for many days and consumes countless lives upon the battlefield. Kings, warriors, teachers, students, relatives, and former companions all fight one another within the same conflict. As the war continues, more and more of the world surrounding the Kuru dynasty is destroyed. Entire armies disappear while the battlefield becomes covered with loss and exhaustion. At last the war moves toward its final stage. Only a small number of warriors remain alive. Among them stands Duryodhana, the last prince of the Kauravas. Through his fall, the long conflict of the Kuru dynasty finally reaches its conclusion.

The Defeat of Duryodhana

Near the end of the war, Duryodhana leaves the battlefield and hides himself within a lake. The Pandava brothers eventually discover where he has gone. The final confrontation of the war then becomes a duel between Bhima and Duryodhana.

The two warriors stand facing one another while carrying heavy maces in their hands. By this point in the war, most of the great warriors of both armies have already fallen. Around the battlefield, the remaining survivors gather silently to watch the final combat.

Bhima fights while carrying the memory of years of anger, humiliation, and rivalry. The conflict between the two men has continued since their youth inside the Kuru palace. Now that long hatred reaches its final moment upon the battlefield.

At last Bhima strikes Duryodhana upon the thigh. Duryodhana falls to the ground, and with his defeat the war of Kurukshetra finally comes to an end. The long struggle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas collapses into silence.

Silence After the War

When the fighting finally stops, the battlefield falls into deep silence. Countless kings, warriors, teachers, and soldiers have lost their lives there. The two branches of the Kuru dynasty are almost completely destroyed by the war they created together.

The Pandava brothers achieve victory, yet the end of the war brings them little joy. Among the dead are people who once guided them, fought beside them, and shared their lives. Teachers, relatives, friends, and companions now lie scattered across the battlefield.

The scale of the destruction becomes impossible to ignore. Kingdoms may one day be rebuilt, but those who died during the war can never return. The cost of victory now stands visible before everyone who survived.

What remains after the war is therefore not triumph but loss. The silence covering Kurukshetra feels heavier than the sounds of battle that once filled the field. The war has ended, yet the suffering it created continues to remain.

The Sorrow After Victory

After the war, Yudhishthira becomes king and takes responsibility for rebuilding the kingdom. Yet even after victory he continues carrying deep sorrow and doubt within himself. The destruction caused by the war never fully leaves his mind.

Yudhishthira repeatedly questions whether the war had truly been the right choice. Although the Pandavas fought believing that justice was on their side, the enormous suffering left behind makes victory feel uncertain and painful.

Many sages and advisors tell him that he must now restore order and rule the kingdom with justice and wisdom. They remind him that surviving the war also brings responsibility toward those still living. Even so, the memories of Kurukshetra do not disappear easily.

Through this ending, the Mahabharata leaves behind one of its deepest questions. Human beings may fight in the name of justice, duty, or righteousness, but how should they continue living after witnessing the destruction created by that struggle. The epic does not offer a simple answer. Instead it leaves the question open within human memory itself.

쿠루크셰트라 전쟁이 끝난 뒤의 거대한 전장이 붉은 석양 아래 조용히 펼쳐져 있습니다. 넓은 평원 위에는 부서진 전차와 흩어진 무기, 쓰러진 깃발들이 여기저기 남아 있습니다. 전장의 중심에는 두료다나가 땅에 쓰러져 있으며, 그의 곁에는 철퇴를 든 비마가 서 있습니다. 멀리에는 판다바 형제들과 살아남은 몇몇 전사들이 침묵 속에서 그 장면을 바라보고 있습니다. 전투는 이미 끝났고, 화면 전체에는 승리보다 상실과 피로, 비극의 분위기가 더 강하게 남아 있습니다. 먼지와 붉은 노을빛은 전쟁이 남긴 공허함과 돌이킬 수 없는 파괴를 강조하고 있습니다.

마하바라타 8화 – 전쟁의 끝

끝없는 죽음과 파괴 끝에 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁은 마침내 끝나지만, 남겨진 것은 승리보다 더 깊은 상실이었습니다.

쿠루크셰트라 전쟁은 오랜 시간 동안 계속되며 수많은 생명을 전장 위에서 앗아 갑니다. 왕과 전사, 스승과 제자, 친척과 동료들이 모두 같은 전장 안에서 서로를 향해 싸우게 됩니다. 전쟁이 계속될수록 쿠루 왕조를 둘러싼 세계 역시 점점 더 무너져 갑니다. 거대한 군대들이 사라지고 전장은 피로와 죽음으로 가득 차게 됩니다. 마침내 전쟁은 마지막 단계로 향하게 되고, 살아남은 전사들은 점점 줄어들게 됩니다. 그 가운데 마지막 카우라바 왕자인 두료다나가 남아 있었습니다. 그의 몰락을 통해 쿠루 왕조의 긴 갈등은 마침내 끝에 도달하게 됩니다.

두료다나의 패배

전쟁 마지막 무렵 두료다나는 전장을 떠나 호수 속에 몸을 숨기게 됩니다. 그러나 결국 판다바 형제들은 그의 위치를 찾아내게 됩니다. 그렇게 해서 전쟁의 마지막 싸움은 비마와 두료다나 사이의 결투로 이어지게 됩니다.

두 전사는 거대한 철퇴를 손에 든 채 서로를 마주합니다. 이 시점이 되자 양쪽 군대의 위대한 전사들 대부분은 이미 전장에서 목숨을 잃은 상태였습니다. 살아남은 사람들은 마지막 결투를 조용히 지켜보게 됩니다.

비마는 오랜 세월 이어져 온 분노와 굴욕, 경쟁의 기억을 안고 싸움에 나섭니다. 두 사람 사이의 갈등은 어린 시절 쿠루 왕궁에서부터 계속되어 왔습니다. 이제 그 긴 증오와 경쟁은 전장의 마지막 순간으로 이어지게 됩니다.

마침내 비마의 철퇴가 두료다나의 허벅지를 강하게 가격하게 됩니다. 두료다나는 땅에 쓰러지고, 그의 패배와 함께 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁 역시 마침내 끝나게 됩니다. 판다바와 카우라바 사이의 긴 갈등은 결국 침묵 속으로 무너져 내리게 됩니다.

전쟁 이후의 침묵

전투가 끝난 뒤 전장은 깊은 침묵 속에 잠기게 됩니다. 수많은 왕과 전사, 스승과 병사들이 그곳에서 목숨을 잃었습니다. 쿠루 왕조의 두 가문 역시 전쟁으로 인해 거의 완전히 파괴된 상태가 됩니다.

판다바 형제들은 승리를 얻게 되었지만 그 승리는 기쁨을 가져다주지 못합니다. 쓰러진 사람들 가운데에는 자신들을 가르쳤던 스승들과 친척, 함께 살아왔던 친구들과 동료들이 포함되어 있었습니다.

전쟁이 남긴 파괴의 규모는 누구도 외면할 수 없게 됩니다. 왕국은 다시 세울 수 있을지 몰라도 죽은 사람들은 결코 돌아올 수 없었습니다. 살아남은 사람들 앞에는 승리의 영광보다 훨씬 더 무거운 상실이 남게 됩니다.

결국 전쟁이 끝난 뒤 남은 것은 환희가 아니라 깊은 공허함이었습니다. 한때 함성과 무기로 가득했던 쿠루크셰트라의 침묵은 오히려 전투의 소리보다 더 무겁게 느껴집니다. 전쟁은 끝났지만, 그 상처와 고통은 계속 남아 있게 됩니다.

승리 이후의 슬픔

전쟁 이후 유디슈티라는 왕이 되어 무너진 왕국을 다시 세우는 책임을 맡게 됩니다. 그러나 승리 이후에도 그의 마음속에는 깊은 슬픔과 죄책감이 남아 있었습니다. 전쟁이 남긴 파괴는 쉽게 그의 기억에서 사라지지 않았습니다.

유디슈티라는 계속해서 스스로에게 질문하게 됩니다. 과연 이 전쟁은 정말 올바른 선택이었는가라는 의문이 그의 마음 안에 남아 있었던 것입니다. 판다바 형제들은 정의를 위해 싸웠다고 믿었지만, 전쟁이 남긴 희생은 승리마저 무겁고 고통스럽게 만들고 있었습니다.

많은 현자들과 조언자들은 이제 그가 왕국을 다시 세우고 정의로운 왕으로 통치해야 한다고 말합니다. 살아남은 사람들을 위해 새로운 질서를 만들어야 한다는 책임 역시 그에게 남아 있었습니다. 그러나 쿠루크셰트라의 기억은 쉽게 사라지지 않았습니다.

마하바라타는 이 마지막 장면을 통해 하나의 깊은 질문을 남기게 됩니다. 인간은 정의와 의무를 위해 싸울 수 있지만, 그 싸움이 남긴 파괴와 상실을 안고 이후의 삶을 어떻게 살아가야 하는가라는 질문입니다. 이 서사는 그 질문에 단순한 답을 주지 않은 채 인간의 기억 속에 남겨 두게 됩니다.
