Mahabharata - What must we follow when duty and justice conflict?
The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories humanity has ever created. This epic took shape in ancient India over many centuries as many older stories were brought together. Kings and warriors, gods and humans all appear within this vast narrative world. At the center of it lies a conflict that begins within a single royal family. This story is not simply a record of war. The Mahabharata asks how human beings live between duty and personal choice. Heroes, kings, warriors, and sages appear throughout the story, yet the focus always returns to human decisions. For this reason the Mahabharata has long remained one of the central works of Indian culture and thought.
The Longest Epic in the World
The Mahabharata is often described as the longest epic poem in the world. The text contains about one hundred thousand verses known as shlokas. Many ancient stories from India were gradually brought together and shaped into this enormous narrative. For this reason the Mahabharata is both a single epic and a collection of many older traditions. The epic is not only literature but also a cultural record. Within its stories appear royal history, mythology, religious ideas, and philosophical reflections. War and reflections on human life unfold together within the same narrative flow. Because of this, the Mahabharata is often read as a story that reveals the spirit of Indian civilization.
The Kuru Dynasty at the Center of the Story
At the center of the Mahabharata stands the Kuru dynasty. This royal house ruled parts of northern India and forms the core of the narrative world. Within this dynasty two branches of the family appear. They are known as the Pandava brothers and the Kaurava brothers. The princes of these two families grow up together in the same palace. They learn from the same teacher and train on the same ground. Yet rivalry over power and kingship slowly turns into deep conflict. In time this rivalry will lead to the great war of Kurukshetra.
Human Duty and the Question of Action
The Mahabharata is not only about victory or defeat in war. It repeatedly asks what human beings ought to do in difficult situations. The duties of kings, warriors, families, and societies appear throughout the story. The characters struggle between these duties and their own emotions. For this reason the epic becomes a story about human responsibility. In war each person makes different choices and must face the consequences. The question of duty extends beyond the battlefield to the whole of human life. This enduring question is one of the reasons the Mahabharata continues to be read today.
