Mahabharata Episode 1 – The Birth of the Rivalry

The rivalry between the Pandava and Kaurava princes begins within the Kuru dynasty and grows into a deeper conflict

The long story of the Mahabharata is known for the great war it tells. Yet that war did not begin suddenly. At the beginning of the story there is a rivalry that grows within a single royal family. The question of who will inherit the future of the dynasty begins to create tension. At first it seems like nothing more than a competition among princes. However, that rivalry slowly deepens over time. In the end the conflict will grow into a vast war. This episode shows how that rivalry first began.

The Kuru Dynasty

At the center of the Mahabharata stands the Kuru dynasty. This royal house had ruled parts of northern India for a long time. Most of the events in the story unfold around the affairs of this family. At the center of the dynasty there were two brothers.

The elder brother was a king named Dhritarashtra. He was a king, yet he had been blind since birth. His younger brother was a king named Pandu. From the families of these two brothers many princes are born.

The sons of Pandu were known as the Pandava brothers. They grow up as five brothers and form a strong bond with one another. The sons of Dhritarashtra were known as the Kaurava brothers. They formed a large family of one hundred brothers.

The princes of the two families grow up together in the same palace. They learn from the same teacher and train in warfare and martial skills in the same place. On the surface the two families appear to belong to a single royal house. Yet tension over kingship and power slowly begins to grow.

The Pandava and Kaurava Princes

Among the Pandava brothers there was a particularly remarkable warrior. His name was Arjuna. In archery he showed a talent that no one else could match. Many people believed that he would become a great warrior in the future.

However, Arjuna’s talent provokes jealousy among the other princes. In particular Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas, begins to regard the Pandava brothers with suspicion. He believes that the power of the dynasty should belong to him. The rivalry between them grows deeper.

The training and competition of the princes appear outwardly to be a process of growth. Yet within it the seeds of future conflict are already growing. The power of the royal house will eventually belong to only one side. For this reason rivalry between the two families becomes unavoidable.

This is how the long story of the Mahabharata begins. What first appears to be a rivalry among princes slowly grows larger. That rivalry eventually leads to a great war between the two families. The conflict within the Kuru dynasty will later lead to the war of Kurukshetra.

마하바라타 1화 – 경쟁의 탄생

판다바와 카우라바 왕자들의 경쟁은 쿠루 왕가 안에서 시작되어 점점 깊은 갈등으로 이어집니다.

마하바라타의 긴 이야기는 거대한 전쟁으로 알려져 있습니다. 그러나 그 전쟁은 갑자기 시작된 것이 아닙니다. 이 이야기의 시작에는 한 왕가 안에서 자라난 경쟁이 있습니다. 왕가의 미래가 누구에게 돌아갈 것인가라는 문제에서 갈등이 태어나기 시작합니다. 처음에는 단지 왕자들 사이의 경쟁처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 그 경쟁은 시간이 지나면서 점점 깊어집니다. 결국 그 갈등은 거대한 전쟁으로 이어지게 됩니다. 이 에피소드는 그 경쟁이 어떻게 시작되었는지를 보여줍니다.

쿠루 왕가

마하바라타의 중심에는 쿠루 왕가가 있습니다. 이 왕가는 오래전부터 북인도 지역을 다스려 온 왕가였습니다. 이야기의 대부분은 이 왕가 안에서 벌어지는 사건들을 중심으로 전개됩니다. 왕가의 중심에는 두 형제가 있었습니다.

형은 드리타라슈트라라는 이름의 왕이었습니다. 그는 왕이었지만 태어날 때부터 눈이 보이지 않았습니다. 그의 동생은 판두라는 왕이었습니다. 두 형제의 가문에서 각각 많은 왕자들이 태어나게 됩니다.

판두의 아들들은 판다바 형제들이라고 불렸습니다. 그들은 다섯 형제로 자라며 서로 강한 유대를 이루게 됩니다. 드리타라슈트라의 아들들은 카우라바 형제들이라고 불렸습니다. 그들은 백 명의 형제로 이루어진 거대한 가문이었습니다.

두 가문의 왕자들은 같은 궁전에서 함께 자랍니다. 그들은 같은 스승에게 배우고 같은 장소에서 무술과 전쟁 기술을 훈련합니다. 겉으로 보면 두 가문은 하나의 왕가처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 왕위와 권력을 둘러싼 긴장은 조금씩 자라기 시작합니다.

판다바와 카우라바 왕자들

판다바 형제 가운데 특히 뛰어난 전사가 있었습니다. 그의 이름은 아르주나였습니다. 그는 활을 다루는 능력에서 누구도 따라올 수 없는 재능을 보였습니다. 많은 사람들이 그가 장차 위대한 전사가 될 것이라고 생각했습니다.

그러나 아르주나의 재능은 다른 왕자들의 질투를 불러옵니다. 특히 카우라바 형제들의 맏아들 두료다나는 판다바 형제들을 경계하기 시작합니다. 그는 자신이 왕가의 권력을 가져야 한다고 믿고 있었습니다. 그 경쟁은 점점 더 깊어집니다.

왕자들의 훈련과 경쟁은 겉으로 보면 성장의 과정처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 그 속에서는 이미 미래의 갈등이 자라고 있었습니다. 왕가의 권력은 결국 한쪽에게만 돌아가게 됩니다. 그래서 두 가문 사이의 경쟁은 피할 수 없는 일이 됩니다.

이렇게 마하바라타의 긴 이야기가 시작됩니다. 처음에는 왕자들 사이의 경쟁처럼 보였던 갈등이 점점 커지게 됩니다. 그 경쟁은 결국 두 가문 사이의 거대한 전쟁으로 이어집니다. 쿠루 왕가의 갈등은 훗날 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁의 시작이 됩니다.
