Circe, the sorceress, sits gracefully on a golden throne in her palace, holding a sparkling magical potion, with a majestic stone palace hidden in a dense forest where wild lions and wolves act like tame pets, with a golden cup on a table representing the power that turns human nature into something beastly.

Circe the Enchantress

Odysseus’s voyage continues, but the sea still does not end. One day his ship arrives at a strange island. There lives a sorceress named Circe.

She warmly welcomes the strangers. She offers food and wine to the exhausted sailors. Yet that kindness is a trap. The moment they eat the food, they lose their human form and turn into beasts.

Odysseus’s sailors also enter her house. They sit at the table and eat the food. Soon they are transformed into pigs. Their bodies become beasts, but their minds remain human.

When Odysseus hears the news, he goes to the house alone. Even in fear, he does not stop. The god Hermes gives him a magical herb. Because of that herb, he does not fall under the spell.


How Odysseus Rescued His Men

Circe tries to use the same magic on Odysseus. But he does not change. This is because Hermes had given him a magical herb that protects him from her spell. At that moment the situation turns, because the power that controlled men with magic no longer works.

In the end, Circe turns the sailors back into humans. Odysseus and his crew remain on the island for a while. Yet they must eventually begin their voyage again.

The story of Circe is not simply a story about magic. The transformation of humans into beasts shows the moment when human beings lose their humanity. In the presence of temptation and desire, people can easily forget what they are.

For this reason, the scene asks a question. Are we still living as human beings, or are we already changing into something else?

오디세우스의 항해는 계속되지만 바다는 여전히 끝나지 않습니다. 어느 날 그의 배는 낯선 섬에 도착합니다. 그곳에는 키르케라는 마녀가 살고 있었습니다.

그녀는 낯선 이들을 따뜻하게 맞이합니다. 지친 선원들에게 음식과 술을 내어줍니다. 그러나 그 친절은 함정이었습니다. 그 음식을 먹는 순간 사람들은 인간의 모습을 잃고 짐승으로 변합니다.

오디세우스의 선원들도 그 집으로 들어갑니다. 그들은 식탁에 앉아 음식을 먹습니다. 그리고 곧 돼지로 변해 버립니다. 몸은 짐승이 되었지만 마음은 여전히 인간인 채로 남아 있습니다.

이 소식을 들은 오디세우스는 홀로 그 집으로 향합니다. 그는 두려움 속에서도 멈추지 않습니다. 신 헤르메스는 그에게 한 가지 약초를 건네줍니다. 그 약초 덕분에 그는 마법에 걸리지 않습니다.


오디세우스가 부하들을 구해낸 방법

키르케는 같은 마법을 오디세우스에게 사용합니다. 그러나 그는 변하지 않습니다. 그 이유는 헤르메스가 미리 그에게 마법을 막는 약초를 주었기 때문입니다. 그 순간 상황이 바뀝니다. 마법으로 사람들을 지배하던 힘이 더 이상 통하지 않기 때문입니다.

결국 키르케는 선원들을 다시 인간으로 돌려놓습니다. 오디세우스와 그의 선원들은 그 섬에서 잠시 머무르게 됩니다. 그러나 그들은 결국 다시 항해를 시작해야 합니다.

키르케의 이야기는 단순한 마법의 이야기가 아닙니다. 인간이 짐승으로 변하는 이야기는 인간이 인간성을 잃는 순간을 보여줍니다. 욕망과 유혹 속에서 인간은 쉽게 자신의 모습을 잊어버릴 수 있기 때문입니다.

그래서 이 장면은 묻습니다. 우리는 지금도 인간으로 살아가고 있는가, 아니면 이미 다른 모습으로 변해가고 있는가.
