Oedipus Episode 1 – The Prophecy

A prophecy declares that Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mother, leading to his abandonment.

The prophecy of Oedipus and King Laius

King Laius of Thebes hears a prophecy concerning his fate from an oracle. The prophecy declares that his son will one day kill his father and marry his mother. It is understood not as a simple warning but as a future that must come to pass. In that moment, the king realizes that both his life and his kingdom are under threat.

This prophecy signifies not only the fate of one person but also the collapse of royal authority and order. The king sees not only his own death but also the disorder of the kingdom at the same time. Laius judges that he must make a choice to avoid this future. Here begins the first human attempt to control fate.

However, this choice already begins to create a structure. The action taken to prevent the future instead becomes the path toward that future. The prophecy functions not as an event but as a direction. Laius steps into that direction by his own will.

The abandoned child Oedipus

When the child is born, Laius immediately makes a decision. He orders that the baby’s feet be bound and that the child be abandoned in the mountains. This act is meant to prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled. The king believes that the child will not survive.

However, this choice is not a complete disconnection. The abandoned child does not die but survives. A shepherd finds the child and sends him elsewhere. A separation created by human choice naturally leads to another connection.

This scene reveals an important structure. Humans attempt to control outcomes but cannot control the process. Abandonment does not become an end but a passage into another path. The life of Oedipus begins to continue along a different path from this point.

The upbringing of Oedipus in Corinth

The abandoned child is sent to the royal house of Corinth. There he grows up as a prince without knowing anything about his birth. The king and queen raise him as their own son. Oedipus grows up in a stable environment.

He lives without any doubt about his identity. However, the truth has not disappeared but exists in a concealed state. His life appears peaceful, yet beneath it a predetermined structure is already in place. He does not know what path he is already on.

This scene shows another condition. Humans live without knowing which story they are part of. Oedipus is ready to make choices, but the necessary information is not given. Fate remains unknown.

The beginning of this story is not simply the start of a tragedy. It shows what kind of structure is created when humans attempt to avoid fate. Choice appears to be freedom, but direction is already determined. Human choices attempt to escape prophecy, yet they operate within its structure.

테베의 왕 라이어스는 신탁을 통해 자신의 운명에 대한 예언을 듣게 됩니다. 그 예언은 그의 아들이 장차 아버지를 죽이고 어머니와 결혼하게 될 것이라는 내용이었습니다. 이 말은 단순한 경고가 아니라 반드시 이루어질 미래로 받아들여졌습니다. 왕은 그 순간 자신의 삶과 왕국 전체가 위협받고 있음을 깨닫습니다.

이 예언은 한 개인의 운명을 넘어 왕권과 질서의 붕괴를 의미합니다. 왕은 자신의 죽음뿐 아니라 왕국의 혼란까지 동시에 보게 됩니다. 라이어스는 이 미래를 피하기 위해 선택을 해야 한다고 판단합니다. 인간이 운명을 통제할 수 있다고 믿는 첫 번째 시도가 여기서 시작됩니다.

그러나 이 선택은 이미 구조를 만들어 내기 시작합니다. 미래를 막기 위한 행동이 오히려 그 미래를 향해 나아가는 경로가 됩니다. 예언은 사건이 아니라 방향으로 작동합니다. 라이어스는 그 방향 안으로 스스로 들어가게 됩니다.

버려진 아기 오이디푸스의 시작

아이가 태어나자 라이어스는 즉시 결정을 내립니다. 그는 아기의 발을 묶어 산에 버리도록 명령합니다. 이 행위는 예언을 끊어내기 위한 조치였습니다. 왕은 아이가 살아남지 못할 것이라 믿었습니다.

그러나 이 선택은 완전한 단절이 아니었습니다. 버려진 아기는 죽지 않고 살아남게 됩니다. 한 목동이 아이를 발견하고 다른 곳으로 보내게 됩니다. 인간이 만든 단절은 자연스럽게 다른 연결로 이어집니다.

이 장면은 중요한 구조를 드러냅니다. 인간은 결과를 통제하려 하지만 과정은 통제하지 못합니다. 버림은 끝이 아니라 이동이 됩니다. 오이디푸스의 삶은 여기서 다른 경로로 이어지기 시작합니다.

코린토스에서 자란 오이디푸스의 성장

버려진 아이는 코린토스 왕가로 보내집니다. 그는 그곳에서 왕자로 자라며 자신의 출생에 대해 아무것도 알지 못합니다. 왕과 왕비는 그를 친아들처럼 키웁니다. 오이디푸스는 안정된 환경 속에서 성장합니다.

그는 자신의 정체에 대한 의심 없이 살아갑니다. 그러나 진실은 사라진 것이 아니라 숨겨진 상태로 존재합니다. 그의 삶은 평온하지만 그 아래에는 이미 정해진 구조가 자리 잡고 있습니다. 그는 자신이 어떤 경로 위에 있는지 알지 못합니다.

이 장면은 또 다른 조건을 보여줍니다. 인간은 자신이 어떤 이야기 속에 있는지 모른 채 살아갑니다. 오이디푸스는 선택할 준비가 되어 있지만 정보는 주어지지 않습니다. 운명은 알려지지 않은 상태로 유지됩니다.

이 이야기의 시작은 단순한 비극의 출발이 아닙니다. 인간이 운명을 피하려 할 때 어떤 구조가 만들어지는지를 보여줍니다. 선택은 자유처럼 보이지만 방향은 이미 정해져 있습니다. 인간의 선택은 예언을 피하려 하지만 그 선택 자체가 구조 안에서 움직입니다.
