Oedipus Episode 2 – The Road to Thebes

Oedipus leaves Corinth to escape fate but unknowingly kills his father at a crossroads.

Oedipus was living the life of an ordinary prince in Corinth, where he had been raised. He had no reason to doubt who his parents were and accepted his life as it was. However, during a banquet, he hears that he might not truly be the son of the king. This doubt becomes the starting point that changes his entire life.

Oedipus hears his own prophecy

Oedipus travels to Delphi to confirm the truth. However, instead of learning about his birth, he receives a different prophecy. The prophecy says that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Upon hearing this, he feels that his entire life is under threat.

He makes a decision to protect the parents he loves. Oedipus decides to leave Corinth. He believes that if he remains there, the prophecy will come true. Therefore, he sets out on the road to escape his fate.

Oedipus kills Laius at the crossroads

During his journey, he arrives at a place where three roads meet. There, he encounters an old man and his attendants. A minor conflict quickly turns into violence, and Oedipus kills them all. He does not know that this event is connected to his fate.

There is a hidden structure within this event. He sets out to escape his fate, yet on that very road he already fulfills part of the prophecy. Oedipus acts without knowing who the old man is. However, that action leads to an irreversible result.

The destined road of Oedipus to Thebes

He continues his journey and moves toward Thebes. His journey is no longer a simple movement but becomes a progression along a predetermined path. He believes he is making choices, yet those choices unfold within a path already set. This narrative reveals how human choice and the structure of fate overlap.

At this point, the story of Oedipus leaves a question. Is a human truly a being who chooses their own path? He tries to escape his fate, yet moves deeper into it. This moment reveals both the freedom and the limits of human existence. Human actions appear free, but their outcomes emerge within pre-existing conditions.

오이디푸스는 자신이 자라온 코린토스에서 평범한 왕자의 삶을 살고 있었습니다. 그는 자신의 부모가 누구인지 의심하지 않았고 현재의 삶을 자연스럽게 받아들이고 있었습니다. 그러나 한 연회에서 그는 자신이 진짜 왕자의 자식이 아닐 수도 있다는 말을 듣게 됩니다. 이 의심은 그의 삶을 완전히 바꾸는 출발점이 됩니다.

자신의 예언을 듣게 된 오이디푸스

오이디푸스는 진실을 확인하기 위해 델포이의 신탁을 찾아갑니다. 그러나 그는 자신의 출생이 아니라 다른 예언을 듣게 됩니다. 그 예언은 그가 자신의 아버지를 죽이고 어머니와 결혼하게 될 것이라는 내용이었습니다. 그는 그 말을 듣고 자신의 삶 전체가 위협받고 있다고 느끼게 됩니다.

그는 자신이 사랑하던 부모를 지키기 위해 결정을 내립니다. 오이디푸스는 코린토스를 떠나기로 합니다. 그는 그곳에 머무르면 예언이 실현될 것이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 그는 자신의 운명을 피하기 위해 스스로 길 위로 나아갑니다.

세 갈래 길에서 라이어스를 죽인 오이디푸스

여행을 하던 그는 세 갈래 길이 만나는 지점에 도착합니다. 그곳에서 그는 한 노인과 그의 수행원들을 만나게 됩니다. 사소한 충돌은 곧 폭력으로 이어지고 오이디푸스는 그들을 모두 죽이게 됩니다. 그는 그 사건이 자신의 운명과 연결되어 있다는 사실을 알지 못합니다.
