Oedipus Episode 7 – The Truth Revealed

Oedipus discovers that he has killed his father and married his mother, fulfilling the prophecy.

The messenger reveals Oedipus’ truth

A messenger from Corinth arrives in Thebes and announces the death of King Polybus. Oedipus feels a moment of relief, believing he has escaped the prophecy that he would kill his father. He begins to think that he has avoided his fate since there is no longer a reason to return to Corinth. However, the messenger continues with words that unsettle Oedipus’s sense of relief.

The messenger reveals that Oedipus is not the biological son of Polybus. He explains that long ago he found an abandoned baby on a mountain and brought the child to the king of Corinth. This statement begins to shake the foundation of Oedipus’s identity. Relief quickly turns into a deeper anxiety.

Oedipus can no longer ignore the question of his birth. He realizes that the life he has believed in may collapse. The messenger’s words are not merely news but a turning point that changes the structure of his understanding. From this moment, the story moves in a direction that cannot be reversed.

The shepherd reveals the birth of Oedipus

Oedipus summons the shepherd from the past to confirm the truth. This shepherd is the man who once handled the abandoned child. At first, he refuses to speak and tries to remain silent. However, he can no longer hide the truth under the command of the king.

The shepherd reveals that the child was the son of King Laius. He confesses that he was ordered to kill the baby but could not bring himself to do it and instead handed the child over to another man. That child was Oedipus himself. The life that was meant to disappear has returned.

This testimony connects the scattered pieces into a single structure. The messenger’s account and the shepherd’s confession align and form one complete truth. Oedipus can no longer deny his identity. The truth emerges with increasing clarity.

The moment Oedipus realizes the prophecy

All the clues come together and lead to a single conclusion. Oedipus realizes that he is the one who killed Laius. He also understands that Jocasta, whom he married, is his mother. The prophecy has already been fully realized.

He repeated his choices in order to avoid fate, but those very choices became the path through which the prophecy was fulfilled. This is the moment when human will fails to escape structure. The act of trying to avoid becomes the process of realization. This is the core structure of tragedy.

This scene raises the question of how much control humans truly have over their lives. Oedipus moved toward the truth and ultimately discovered it. However, that truth destroys him. Human knowledge does not always lead to salvation.

The story of Oedipus reveals the tension between truth and fate. He never stopped seeking to know, and he had no choice but to accept the result. Humans make choices within a structure but cannot completely escape it. This scene reveals that limit with absolute clarity.

This story leaves a question. Can a human accept the truth once it is known? The journey of Oedipus moves toward truth while also resisting it. Truth is not completed when it is discovered but when it is accepted. Humans move toward truth, but their capacity to bear it is limited.

사자는 오이디푸스가 폴리보스의 친아들이 아니라고 밝힙니다. 그는 오래전 산에서 버려진 아기를 발견해 코린토스 왕에게 데려갔다고 설명합니다. 이 말은 오이디푸스의 정체를 근본부터 흔들기 시작합니다. 안도감은 곧 더 깊은 불안으로 바뀝니다.
