Tall columns and deep shadows fill the palace hall, while strong light falls upon Oedipus as Tiresias remains partially hidden in darkness. The scene captures the tension between political authority and the knowledge of truth.
Oedipus Rex Episode 6 – The Search for the Truth
As Oedipus searches for the hidden cause behind the plague, the investigation gradually turns into a confrontation with the truth about himself.
The plague in Thebes has already pushed the city into fear and instability. Oedipus publicly promises that he will uncover the truth and remove the source of the city’s suffering. At first, the investigation appears to focus on an external problem hidden somewhere in the past. However, the deeper the search continues, the more the direction of the investigation begins turning inward.
The tragedy now moves away from disaster itself and toward the structure hidden beneath it. Questions about the murder of King Laius gradually become questions about identity, memory, and responsibility. The truth no longer exists as something distant from Oedipus. Instead, it slowly begins surrounding him from every direction.
At this stage, the story introduces a conflict between political power and uncomfortable truth. Oedipus possesses authority as king and believes that determination and intelligence will allow him to solve the crisis. Yet the truth he seeks cannot be controlled through power alone. The investigation becomes dangerous precisely because it threatens the structure supporting both the city and Oedipus himself.
The tragedy therefore presents truth not as simple information waiting to be discovered, but as something that destabilizes human relationships, authority, and self-understanding. Oedipus moves toward the truth because he believes it will restore order. Yet every step closer to revelation also moves him closer to collapse.
Conflict between Tiresias and Oedipus
Oedipus summons Tiresias in order to uncover the hidden truth behind the plague. Tiresias is known as a prophet who sees what ordinary people cannot see and who conveys the will of the gods. Oedipus demands answers because he believes the city can only be saved once the truth is revealed.
At first, Tiresias refuses to speak. He already understands the consequences that the truth will bring once it is spoken aloud. Silence appears safer than revelation. Yet Oedipus continues pressuring him, insisting that the truth must be revealed for the sake of the city.
Under this pressure, Tiresias finally speaks. His words do not function as ordinary information or advice. Instead, they act as a warning that exposes the deeper structure hidden beneath the investigation. He declares that the man searching for the murderer is himself the murderer.
This statement completely reverses the direction of the investigation. Oedipus, who believes himself to be solving the crisis, suddenly becomes connected to the center of the crisis itself. The search for an external enemy turns into a confrontation with an internal truth.
The scene reveals a powerful contrast between authority and knowledge. Oedipus stands in light as king, confident in his position and judgment, while Tiresias remains in shadow despite possessing the deeper understanding. The tragedy suggests that political power and truth do not always stand on the same side.
Suspicion and conflict over the truth
Oedipus refuses to accept the accusation made by Tiresias. Rather than believing the prophecy, he interprets it as part of a conspiracy against him. The king judges the situation through the perspective of power, authority, and political danger. Truth is therefore transformed into conflict instead of recognition.
His suspicion gradually expands beyond Tiresias himself. Oedipus begins suspecting even Creon, one of the people closest to him. Relationships that once appeared stable begin weakening under the pressure of uncertainty and fear.
The tragedy shows how truth can destabilize human relationships before it is even fully revealed. Suspicion spreads through the palace and begins affecting both personal trust and political order. The crisis no longer exists only outside the city. It now grows within the structure of power itself.
This moment also reveals an important limitation of human beings. People often accept only the truth they are emotionally capable of enduring. Truth may exist objectively, yet it cannot fully function if the human mind refuses to receive it. Because of this, conflict deepens rather than disappears.
The tragedy therefore presents denial as part of the human response to unbearable knowledge. Oedipus searches for truth while simultaneously resisting it. The closer the truth approaches, the more violently he attempts to reject it.
The past revealed and Oedipus’ identity
Despite resistance and conflict, the investigation continues moving forward. Different testimonies gradually begin connecting together. Fragments of the past slowly align with events in the present. Time no longer appears divided into separate moments but instead forms a single connected structure.
Small clues gather one by one and begin pointing toward the same conclusion. Oedipus slowly moves closer to confronting his own past. Yet even now, he still does not fully understand the structure surrounding his life. The truth does not appear all at once but unfolds through a gradual process.
This part of the tragedy reveals another paradox within human existence. The closer human beings move toward truth, the more strongly they may attempt to deny it. Knowing something intellectually and accepting it emotionally remain entirely different processes. Oedipus becomes trapped between these two states.
The story therefore asks a difficult question. Once human beings discover the truth, are they truly capable of accepting it? Oedipus moves steadily toward revelation while simultaneously resisting what that revelation means. Truth is not completed merely when it is found. It becomes complete only when it is accepted.
The tragedy also suggests that the process of uncovering truth cannot easily be stopped once it has begun. Every testimony, memory, and connection continues pushing the investigation forward. The hidden structure beneath the city slowly emerges whether Oedipus wishes to see it or not.

이 장면은 인간 한계 역시 드러냅니다. 인간은 자신이 감당할 수 있는 범위 안의 진실만 받아들이려는 경향이 있습니다. 진실은 객관적으로 존재할 수 있지만 인간이 받아들이지 못하면 완전히 기능하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 갈등은 사라지지 않고 더 깊어집니다.

드러나는 과거와 오이디푸스(Oedipus)의 정체
저항과 갈등 속에서도 조사는 계속 이어집니다. 서로 다른 증언들은 조금씩 연결되기 시작합니다. 과거 조각들은 현재 사건들과 점차 이어집니다. 시간은 서로 분리된 순간이 아니라 하나의 연결된 구조처럼 드러나기 시작합니다.
작은 단서들은 하나씩 모이며 같은 방향을 가리키기 시작합니다. 오이디푸스는 점점 자신의 과거와 가까워집니다. 그러나 그는 여전히 자신의 삶을 둘러싼 구조 전체를 완전히 이해하지 못하고 있습니다. 진실은 한순간에 드러나는 것이 아니라 점진적으로 모습을 드러냅니다.
이 부분은 인간 존재 안에 있는 또 다른 역설을 보여 줍니다. 인간은 진실에 가까워질수록 오히려 그것을 더욱 부정하려 할 수도 있습니다. 무엇을 아는 것과 그것을 받아들이는 것은 전혀 다른 과정입니다. 오이디푸스는 그 두 상태 사이에 갇히게 됩니다.
작품은 여기서 하나의 어려운 질문을 남깁니다. 인간은 진실을 알게 된 뒤 그것을 정말 받아들일 수 있는가라는 질문입니다. 오이디푸스는 점점 진실 쪽으로 움직이지만 동시에 그 의미를 거부하려 합니다. 진실은 단순히 발견되었을 때 완성되는 것이 아니라 받아들여질 때 비로소 완성됩니다.
비극은 또한 진실을 향한 움직임이 시작된 이후에는 쉽게 멈출 수 없음을 보여 줍니다. 증언과 기억, 연결들은 계속해서 사건을 앞으로 밀어 갑니다. 도시 아래 숨겨져 있던 구조는 이제 오이디푸스 의지와 상관없이 조금씩 모습을 드러내고 있습니다.
