Oedipus Episode 6 – The Investigation

 

Inside the somber, stone-pillared palace of Thebes, King Oedipus stands bathed in a harsh, bright light as he confronts the blind prophet Tiresias, who remains partially obscured in the deep shadows. The high Greek columns and the stark contrast between light and dark create a heavy atmosphere of tension, symbolizing the structural conflict between the ruler's worldly power and the prophet's hidden, devastating truth.


Oedipus Episode 6 – The Search for the Truth

Tiresias reveals that Oedipus himself is the murderer, but he refuses to accept the truth.


Conflict between Tiresias and Oedipus

Oedipus summons the prophet Tiresias in order to uncover the truth. He is one who sees what is unseen and conveys the will of the gods. The king demands an answer to save the city. This scene marks the moment when a human question directly confronts the realm of the divine.

Tiresias at first refuses to speak. He knows the consequence that the truth will bring. Under the king’s pressure, he finally begins to speak. His words are not simple information but a warning that reveals a deeper structure.

He declares that the one who seeks the murderer is the murderer himself. This statement completely reverses the direction of the investigation. The king who attempts to solve the problem becomes the center of the problem. The story now shifts from an external enemy to an internal truth.


Suspicion and conflict over the truth

Oedipus refuses to accept these words. He suspects Tiresias and interprets the message as a conspiracy. The king judges the situation based on his position and authority. At this moment, truth is not accepted but transformed into conflict.

He begins to suspect even Creon. Those closest to him begin to appear as enemies. Truth starts to function as a force that destabilizes relationships. The situation gradually shakes both the inner self and the structure of power.

This scene reveals a limitation of human beings. Humans accept only the truth that lies within what they can bear. Truth exists, but if it is not accepted, it does not function. Therefore, the conflict deepens.


The past revealed and Oedipus’ identity

The investigation does not stop and continues forward. Testimonies from different people begin to connect one by one. Events from the past begin to link with the present. Time is not separate but connected within a single structure.

Small clues gather and point toward a single direction. Oedipus gradually begins to confront his own past. However, he still does not fully understand that structure. Truth reveals itself through a gradual process.

This scene shows an important paradox. The closer humans get to the truth, the more strongly they try to deny it. Knowing and accepting are different processes. Humans struggle between them.

This story leaves a question. Can a human accept the truth once it is known? The journey of Oedipus moves toward truth but also resists it. Truth is not completed when it is found but when it is accepted. Human Story Lab reads again the relationship between humans and truth through this scene. 오이디푸스는 진실을 밝히기 위해 예언자 티레시아스를 부릅니다. 그는 보이지 않는 것을 보는 자로서 신의 뜻을 전달하는 존재입니다. 왕은 그에게 도시를 구하기 위한 답을 요구합니다. 이 장면은 인간의 질문이 신의 영역과 직접 마주하는 순간입니다.

티레시아스는 처음에는 말을 거부합니다. 그는 진실이 가져올 결과를 알고 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 왕의 압박 속에서 결국 입을 열게 됩니다. 그가 전하는 말은 단순한 정보가 아니라 구조를 드러내는 경고입니다.

그는 살인자를 찾고 있는 사람이 바로 그 살인자라고 말합니다. 이 말은 사건의 방향을 완전히 뒤집습니다. 문제를 해결하려는 왕이 문제의 중심이라는 구조가 드러납니다. 이야기는 이제 외부의 적이 아니라 내부의 진실로 이동합니다.


진실을 둘러싼 의심과 권력의 충돌

오이디푸스는 이 말을 받아들이지 않습니다. 그는 티레시아스를 의심하며 음모로 해석합니다. 왕은 자신의 위치와 권력을 기준으로 상황을 판단합니다. 이 순간 진실은 받아들여지지 않고 갈등으로 전환됩니다.

그는 크레온까지 의심하기 시작합니다. 가까운 사람까지 적으로 보이기 시작합니다. 진실은 관계를 흔드는 힘으로 작용합니다. 사건은 점점 개인의 내면과 권력 구조를 흔들기 시작합니다.

이 장면은 인간의 한계를 보여줍니다. 사람은 자신이 받아들일 수 있는 범위 안에서만 진실을 인정합니다. 진실은 존재하지만 받아들여지지 않으면 기능하지 않습니다. 그래서 갈등은 점점 더 깊어집니다.


점점 드러나는 과거와 오이디푸스의 정체

조사는 멈추지 않고 계속 진행됩니다. 여러 사람의 증언이 하나씩 연결되기 시작합니다. 과거에 일어났던 사건들이 현재와 이어지기 시작합니다. 시간은 분리되어 있지 않고 하나의 구조로 연결됩니다.

작은 단서들이 모이며 하나의 방향을 가리킵니다. 오이디푸스는 점점 자신의 과거와 마주하게 됩니다. 그러나 그는 아직 그 구조를 완전히 이해하지 못합니다. 진실은 점진적으로 드러나는 방식으로 진행됩니다.

이 장면은 중요한 역설을 보여줍니다. 진실에 가까워질수록 인간은 그것을 더 강하게 부정하려 합니다. 알게 되는 것과 받아들이는 것은 다른 과정입니다. 인간은 그 사이에서 갈등합니다.
