Ramayana Episode 3 – The Throne and the Exile

 

Rama stands before the great gates of Ayodhya as he prepares to leave the kingdom for the forest. He no longer wears the clothing of a prince and instead appears in simple garments suited for exile and wandering. Beside him stand Sita and Lakshmana, both choosing to follow him into the unknown journey ahead. Behind them rise the palace walls and towers of Ayodhya while citizens and members of the royal court gather silently near the gates in sorrow. The composition centers on the backs of the three figures as they turn away from the city and look toward the distant forest road, marking the tragic beginning of exile and separation.

Ramayana Episode 3 – The Throne and the Exile

Rama loses the throne and leaves Ayodhya after choosing to protect his father’s promise over his own future.

As Rama grew older, an important change began approaching the kingdom of Ayodhya. King Dasharatha had started considering who would succeed him as ruler of the kingdom. Among the royal family and the people of the city, many already believed that Rama would become the next king. The king himself had also quietly reached the same decision in his mind.

The Question of the Succession

Inside the palace of Ayodhya, preparations gradually began for Rama’s succession to the throne. King Dasharatha understood that the people respected Rama for his calm character, discipline, and sense of responsibility. Ministers and nobles within the royal court also believed that Rama possessed the qualities expected of a future ruler. As news of the decision spread through the kingdom, anticipation slowly grew inside the palace and throughout the city.

The possibility of Rama becoming king brought hope and stability to many people in Ayodhya. After years of waiting for an heir, the kingdom finally appeared ready to enter a peaceful new era under a respected successor. Ceremonies and royal preparations began moving forward as though the future had already been decided.

Yet beneath the surface of the palace another tension continued to exist. King Dasharatha had several queens, and each queen naturally thought about the future of her own son. Among them, Kaikeyi held a particularly important place because she had long received the affection and trust of the king. Her son Bharata was also one of the princes of Ayodhya.

As preparations for the succession continued, the atmosphere inside the palace slowly became divided between celebration and uncertainty. What first appeared to be a peaceful transfer of power gradually moved toward conflict that would change the future of the kingdom entirely.

Kaikeyi’s Demand

One day Kaikeyi reminded King Dasharatha of a promise he had made long ago. During a past battle she had once helped save the king, and in return Dasharatha promised that he would someday grant her two wishes. For many years Kaikeyi had not claimed the promise, but now she decided that the time had come to use it.

Kaikeyi spoke her demands directly before the king. Her first wish was that Bharata should become the next ruler of Ayodhya instead of Rama. Her second wish was even more severe. She demanded that Rama should leave the kingdom and live in exile within the forest for many years.

The moment shattered the stability that had surrounded the palace only days earlier. Dasharatha was overcome with shock and grief after hearing Kaikeyi’s demands. The king understood that granting the wishes would destroy both his plans and his relationship with Rama, yet he also believed that he could not break the promise he had once given.

Inside the palace, sorrow and confusion quickly spread among the royal family and court officials. The future that had seemed certain suddenly disappeared, and the kingdom moved toward a completely different path from the one everyone had expected.

Rama Leaves for the Forest

King Dasharatha fell into deep despair as the reality of Kaikeyi’s demand became unavoidable. Yet despite his sorrow, he believed that a king could not abandon a promise once it had been given. Rama also accepted that preserving his father’s honor and keeping the royal promise were more important than claiming the throne for himself.

For this reason, Rama chose to give up the kingship without resistance and prepare to leave Ayodhya for the forest. He removed the clothing of a prince and accepted the simple appearance of exile. The decision transformed his life completely in a single moment. The future king of Ayodhya was now preparing to become a wanderer far from the palace and the city where he had grown up.

Sita refused to remain behind inside the palace and declared that she would follow Rama into exile. Lakshmana also chose to accompany his elder brother rather than stay safely within the kingdom. Together the three left the palace and began walking toward the forests beyond Ayodhya.

The people of the city watched the departure with grief and silence. What should have been the beginning of Rama’s reign instead became the beginning of separation, exile, and suffering. From that moment onward, the story of the Ramayana entered a completely different path.

라마가 아요디야를 떠나 숲으로 향하는 순간입니다. 아요디야 궁전의 거대한 성문 앞에서 라마는 왕자의 옷을 벗고 단순한 숲의 옷차림으로 서 있습니다. 그의 곁에는 시타와 락슈마나가 함께 서서 같은 방향을 바라보고 있습니다. 뒤쪽에는 아요디야의 궁전과 성벽이 보이고, 성문 주변에는 슬픔에 잠긴 시민들과 궁정 인물들이 조용히 서 있습니다. 화면은 도시를 뒤로한 세 사람의 뒷모습을 중심으로 구성되어 있으며, 긴 추방과 방랑의 시작을 상징하는 장면입니다.

라마야나 3화 – 왕위와 추방

라마는 왕위를 포기하고 아버지의 약속을 지키기 위해 아요디야를 떠나 숲으로 향하게 됩니다.

라마가 성장하면서 아요디야 왕국에는 중요한 변화가 다가오기 시작했습니다. 왕 다샤라타는 이제 자신을 이을 다음 왕을 결정하려 하고 있었습니다. 왕궁과 도시의 사람들은 대부분 라마가 새로운 왕이 될 것이라고 믿고 있었습니다. 다샤라타 왕 역시 마음속으로는 이미 같은 결정을 내린 상태였습니다.

왕위 계승의 문제

아요디야 왕궁 안에서는 라마의 왕위 계승을 준비하는 움직임이 조금씩 시작되고 있었습니다. 다샤라타 왕은 백성들과 대신들이 모두 라마를 존중하고 있다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 사람들은 그의 차분한 성격과 책임감, 절제된 태도가 미래의 왕에게 필요한 자질이라고 생각했습니다. 왕궁 안과 도시 전체에는 새로운 왕의 시대가 시작될 것이라는 기대가 퍼져 나가기 시작했습니다.

라마가 왕이 된다는 소식은 많은 사람들에게 안정과 희망처럼 받아들여졌습니다. 오랫동안 후계자를 기다려 온 왕국은 이제 평화로운 계승을 통해 새로운 시대를 맞이할 준비를 하는 듯 보였습니다. 왕궁 안에서는 의식과 준비가 이어졌고, 사람들은 이미 미래가 결정된 것처럼 이야기하기 시작했습니다.

그러나 왕궁 안에는 겉으로 드러나지 않은 긴장 역시 존재하고 있었습니다. 다샤라타 왕에게는 여러 왕비가 있었고, 각 왕비들은 자신의 아들에 대한 생각을 가지고 있었습니다. 그 가운데 카이케이는 오랫동안 왕의 사랑과 신뢰를 받아 온 왕비였습니다. 그녀의 아들 바라타 역시 아요디야의 왕자 가운데 한 사람이었습니다.

왕위 계승 준비가 계속될수록 왕궁의 분위기는 점점 복잡해지기 시작했습니다. 평화로운 권력 교체처럼 보였던 일은 조금씩 왕국 전체의 운명을 바꾸게 될 갈등으로 향하고 있었습니다.

카이케이의 요구

어느 날 카이케이는 다샤라타 왕에게 오래전 약속 하나를 상기시켰습니다. 과거 전쟁에서 그녀가 왕을 도운 적이 있었고, 그 대가로 왕은 언젠가 두 가지 소원을 들어주겠다고 약속한 일이 있었습니다. 오랫동안 그 약속을 사용하지 않았던 카이케이는 이제 그 권리를 요구할 때가 왔다고 판단했습니다.

카이케이는 왕 앞에서 자신의 두 가지 요구를 이야기했습니다. 첫 번째는 자신의 아들 바라타를 새로운 왕으로 세워 달라는 것이었습니다. 그리고 두 번째 요구는 더욱 충격적인 것이었습니다. 그녀는 라마를 왕국 밖 숲으로 보내야 한다고 말했습니다.

카이케이는 라마가 오랜 세월 동안 숲에서 추방 생활을 해야 한다고 주장했습니다. 그 순간까지 평화롭게 보였던 왕궁의 분위기는 완전히 무너지기 시작했습니다. 다샤라타 왕은 카이케이의 말을 듣고 깊은 충격과 슬픔에 빠졌습니다.

왕은 자신의 계획과 라마와의 관계가 모두 무너질 것이라는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 동시에 그는 왕으로서 한 번 한 약속을 깨뜨릴 수 없다고 생각했습니다. 왕궁 안에는 슬픔과 혼란이 빠르게 퍼져 나갔고, 사람들은 갑작스럽게 바뀐 운명 앞에서 말을 잃게 됩니다.

숲으로 떠나는 라마

다샤라타 왕은 카이케이의 요구가 현실이 되자 깊은 절망에 빠지게 됩니다. 그러나 그는 왕이 한 약속을 스스로 어길 수 없다고 생각했습니다. 라마 역시 아버지의 명예와 왕실의 약속을 지키는 것이 자신의 왕위보다 더 중요하다고 받아들이게 됩니다.

그래서 라마는 저항하지 않고 왕위를 포기하기로 결정합니다. 그는 왕자의 옷을 벗고 숲에서 살아갈 사람의 단순한 옷차림을 받아들였습니다. 한순간에 미래의 왕이었던 그의 삶은 완전히 다른 방향으로 바뀌게 됩니다.

시타는 왕궁에 남지 않겠다고 말하며 라마와 함께 추방의 길을 선택합니다. 락슈마나 역시 형을 떠나지 않고 함께 숲으로 가기로 결심합니다. 세 사람은 함께 왕궁을 떠나 아요디야 바깥 숲으로 이어지는 길 위에 서게 됩니다.

아요디야의 사람들은 슬픔 속에서 그들의 떠남을 바라보았습니다. 새로운 왕의 즉위식이 되어야 할 순간은 추방과 분리의 시작으로 바뀌고 말았습니다. 바로 그 순간부터 라마야나의 이야기는 완전히 다른 길로 들어가기 시작합니다.
