Ramayana Episode 3 – The Throne and the Exile

Rama gives up the throne and leaves for the forest to fulfill his father’s promise.

As Rama grew older an important change was being prepared in the kingdom of Ayodhya. King Dasharatha was beginning to decide who would succeed him as king. Many people believed that Rama would become the next ruler. The king himself had already made the same decision in his mind.

The Question of the Succession

In the palace of Ayodhya preparations began for Rama’s succession to the throne. King Dasharatha knew that both the people and his ministers respected Rama. For this reason he made the decision to place Rama on the throne. The entire kingdom began to expect the rise of a new king.

Yet another tension existed within the palace. The king had several queens and each queen thought about her own son. Kaikeyi in particular was a queen who had long enjoyed the king’s affection. Her son Bharata was also a prince.

Kaikeyi’s Demand

One day Kaikeyi reminded the king of a promise from long ago. The king had once promised to grant her two wishes after she had helped him in a past battle. Kaikeyi decided that the time had come to claim that promise. She wanted her son Bharata to become king.

Kaikeyi spoke her two demands to the king. The first was that Bharata should be crowned as king. The second was that Rama should be sent away to the forest. She insisted that Rama must leave the kingdom for many years.

Rama Leaves for the Forest

King Dasharatha fell into deep sorrow when he heard this demand. Yet he believed that he could not break the promise he had once made. Rama also accepted that keeping his father’s promise was the right choice. For that reason he decided to give up the throne and leave for the forest.

Sita and Lakshmana said that they would go with Rama. The three of them left the palace and began their journey toward the forest. The people of Ayodhya watched the scene with sorrow. In this way Rama’s life entered a completely different path from that moment.

라마는 아버지의 약속을 지키기 위해 왕위를 포기하고 숲으로 떠납니다.

라마가 성장하면서 아요디야 왕국에서는 중요한 변화가 준비되고 있었습니다. 왕 다샤라타는 자신의 뒤를 이을 왕을 정하려 하고 있었습니다. 많은 사람들은 라마가 다음 왕이 될 것이라고 생각했습니다. 왕 역시 그 결정을 마음속에 두고 있었습니다.

왕위 계승 문제

아요디야 궁전에서는 라마의 왕위 계승을 준비하는 움직임이 시작됩니다. 왕 다샤라타는 백성들과 신하들이 라마를 존경한다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 라마를 왕위에 올리려는 결정을 내립니다. 왕국 전체가 새로운 왕의 등장을 기대하기 시작합니다.

그러나 궁전 안에는 또 다른 긴장이 존재하고 있었습니다. 왕에게는 여러 왕비가 있었고 각 왕비는 자신의 아들을 생각하고 있었습니다. 특히 카이케이는 왕의 사랑을 많이 받던 왕비였습니다. 그녀의 아들 바라타 역시 왕자였습니다.

카이케이의 요구

어느 날 카이케이는 왕에게 오래전 약속을 떠올리게 합니다. 왕은 과거 전쟁에서 그녀의 도움을 받았을 때 두 가지 소원을 들어주겠다고 약속한 적이 있었습니다. 카이케이는 이제 그 약속을 요구하기로 결심합니다. 그녀는 자신의 아들 바라타가 왕이 되기를 원했습니다.

카이케이는 두 가지 요구를 왕에게 말합니다. 첫째는 바라타를 왕으로 세우는 것이었습니다. 둘째는 라마를 숲으로 보내는 것이었습니다. 그녀는 라마가 오랜 시간 왕국을 떠나 있어야 한다고 주장합니다.

숲으로 떠나는 라마

왕 다샤라타는 이 요구를 듣고 깊은 슬픔에 빠집니다. 그러나 그는 약속을 어길 수 없다고 생각합니다. 라마 역시 아버지의 약속을 지키는 것이 옳다고 받아들입니다. 그래서 그는 왕위를 포기하고 숲으로 떠나기로 결정합니다.

시타와 락슈마나는 라마와 함께 가겠다고 말합니다. 세 사람은 궁전을 떠나 숲으로 향하는 길에 오릅니다. 아요디야의 사람들은 그 장면을 슬픈 마음으로 바라봅니다. 이렇게 라마의 삶은 전혀 다른 길로 들어가게 됩니다.
