The Iliad Episode 1 – Paris, Who Took and Hid

Paris takes Helen and brings her to Troy, beginning the war through a single choice.

The Trojan War did not begin with vast armies suddenly colliding. At the beginning of this war stood the choice of a single man. Everything began when Paris, the prince of Troy, took Helen, the queen of Sparta. Great wars often begin with very small events.

Helen was known throughout the Greek world as the most beautiful woman. She was already the wife of Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Yet Paris took her and returned with her to Troy. This event was not merely a story of love but the breaking of a promise between kings.

Why the Trojan War Began?

When Helen’s marriage was arranged, the kings of the Greek world made a single oath. If anyone should take her away, all of them would fight together to defend that marriage. For this reason, the choice of Paris was no longer the problem of one city or one household. It became an event that moved many kings and armies.

After this event, the kings of the Greek world began to gather their forces. Agamemnon gathered many rulers and prepared for war. Many heroes joined this war. The war became an event that could no longer be avoided.

The Human Choice at the Center of the Iliad

Yet the Iliad shows that human choice matters more than the beginning of the war itself. Paris took Helen, but he was not the one who fought at the center of the war. Others fought the war and others died. Choice and consequence fell upon different people.

For this reason, the story does not remain a simple tale of war. Some follow their desires and others must bear the result. Some people choose and others fight. Wars often begin in this way.

This single event began to move the fate of countless people. The desire of one person shook the destiny of a city. That choice eventually grew into a war that spread across the world. It was the moment when a personal decision became the fate of a community.

So the Iliad leaves us with a question. When do wars truly begin? And who pays the price of those wars? Though the story is ancient, the question still remains today.

파리스는 헬레네를 데려가며 한 사람의 선택이 전쟁의 시작이 되는 순간을 만듭니다.

트로이 전쟁은 거대한 군대가 갑자기 충돌하면서 시작된 것이 아닙니다. 이 전쟁의 시작에는 한 사람의 선택이 있었습니다. 트로이의 왕자 파리스가 스파르타의 왕비 헬레네를 데려가면서 모든 것이 움직이기 시작합니다. 거대한 전쟁은 종종 아주 작은 사건에서 시작됩니다.

헬레네는 그리스 세계에서 가장 아름다운 여인으로 알려져 있었습니다. 그녀는 이미 스파르타의 왕 메넬라오스의 아내였습니다. 그러나 파리스는 그녀를 데려가 트로이로 돌아갑니다. 이 사건은 단순한 사랑 이야기가 아니라 왕과 왕 사이의 약속을 깨뜨린 사건이었습니다.

트로이 전쟁은 왜 시작되었는가

헬레네의 결혼이 이루어질 때 그리스 세계의 왕들은 하나의 맹세를 했습니다. 누구든 그녀를 빼앗는 일이 일어나면 모두가 함께 그 결혼을 지키기 위해 싸우겠다는 약속이었습니다. 그래서 파리스의 선택은 한 도시와 한 가정의 문제가 아니게 됩니다. 그것은 수많은 왕들과 군대를 움직이는 사건이 됩니다.

일리아드 중심에 있는 인간의 선택

그러나 일리아드는 전쟁의 시작보다 인간의 선택을 더 중요하게 보여 줍니다. 파리스는 헬레네를 데려왔지만 그 전쟁의 중심에서 싸우는 인물은 아니었습니다. 전쟁은 다른 사람들이 싸우고 다른 사람들이 죽는 방식으로 진행됩니다. 선택과 대가가 서로 다른 사람에게 돌아가는 것입니다.

그래서 이 이야기는 단순한 전쟁 이야기로 끝나지 않습니다. 누군가는 욕망을 따르고 누군가는 그 결과를 감당합니다. 어떤 사람은 선택하고 어떤 사람은 싸웁니다. 전쟁은 언제나 이런 방식으로 시작됩니다.

이 사건은 결국 수많은 사람들의 운명을 움직이기 시작합니다. 한 사람의 욕망은 한 도시의 운명을 흔듭니다. 그리고 그 선택은 세계 전체의 전쟁으로 이어집니다. 개인의 선택이 공동체의 운명이 되는 순간입니다.

그래서 일리아드는 우리에게 질문을 남깁니다. 전쟁은 언제 시작되는가. 그리고 그 전쟁의 대가는 누가 치르는가? 오래된 서사이지만 이 질문은 지금도 여전히 남아 있습니다.
