Why the Trojan War Began?
The Trojan War may seem to have begun because of fate or the games of the gods. Yet at the beginning of this story stands the choice of a single person. Everything begins when Paris, the prince of Troy, takes Helen, the queen of Sparta. Great wars often begin from very small choices.
Helen was known throughout the Greek world as the most beautiful woman. She was already the wife of Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Yet Paris takes her and returns with her to Troy. This event was not merely a story of love but the breaking of a promise between kings.
The Oath That Drew the Greek Kings into War
When Helen’s marriage was arranged, the kings of the Greek world made a single oath. If anyone should take her away, all of them would fight together to defend that marriage. For this reason, the choice of Paris is no longer the problem of one city or one household. It becomes an event that moves many kings and armies.
The war that begins in this way soon draws the entire Greek world into it. Agamemnon gathers many kings and organizes a great army. Countless heroes join the war and countless soldiers cross the sea toward Troy. The desire of one person begins to move the whole world.
The Wrath of Achilles at the Heart of the Iliad
Yet the Iliad is not merely a record of war. At the center of this story stands the anger of a single hero. That hero is Achilles, the greatest warrior among the Greek forces. His anger begins to shake the fate of many people.
The anger of Achilles begins with honor and insult. He feels that his honor has been taken from him and withdraws from the war. As a result, the balance of the war begins to collapse. The emotion of a single hero begins to move the fate of many lives.
For this reason, the Iliad does not merely tell us who wins and who loses. This story asks what human beings choose in the midst of war. Some people make choices, some people fight, and some people die. War always unfolds in this way.
This story was written a very long time ago. Yet the question it asks still remains today. Human choices always begin to move the lives of others. And so we ask. Why do wars begin, and who pays the price?
