The Iliad Episode 3 – The Battlefield Without Achilles

Without Achilles, the Greek army loses its strength, and the balance of war shifts toward Troy.

After Achilles withdrew from the battlefield, the situation of the Greek army began to change rapidly. A battlefield without its strongest warrior could no longer maintain the same balance. The Greek army still had many soldiers and heroes. Yet the central strength of the war had disappeared.

The warriors of Troy soon noticed this change. They began to press the attack more strongly. The front lines gradually began to tilt toward Troy. The Greek army started to be pushed back.

At the center of this battlefield stood another figure. It was Hector, the prince of Troy. Hector was the greatest warrior leading the Trojan army. He fought to defend his city and his family.

Hector was not merely a heroic warrior but a man who carried responsibility. He knew that his fate was bound to the war. For that reason he always stood at the front of the battlefield. His fight was not for personal glory but for the survival of his city.

Hector Leads the Trojan Army

While Achilles remained absent, the balance of the war increasingly shifted toward Troy. The Greek camp itself began to face danger. The lines of battle were slowly pushed backward. The war began to move in a new direction.

Through this moment, the Iliad shows how fragile the balance of war can be. The absence of a single person can change the course of an entire war. A hero is not only an individual but the center of the battlefield. When that center disappears, the shape of the war changes.

Yet this story is not simply about victory or defeat. In war, each person fights for a different reason. Some fight for honor and others fight for their city. And some fight simply to survive.

So the Iliad leaves another question. What truly moves a war forward? Is it strength or responsibility? Is it the anger of a hero or the fate of a city? Though the story is ancient, the question still continues.

아킬레우스가 전장에서 물러난 뒤 그리스 군대의 상황은 빠르게 변하기 시작합니다. 가장 강한 전사가 사라진 전장은 이전과 같은 균형을 유지할 수 없었습니다. 그리스 군대는 여전히 수많은 병사와 영웅을 가지고 있었습니다. 그러나 전쟁의 중심이었던 힘 하나가 사라진 것입니다.

트로이의 전사들은 이 변화를 곧 알아차립니다. 그들은 점점 더 강하게 공격을 시작합니다. 전선은 조금씩 트로이 쪽으로 기울기 시작합니다. 그리스 군대는 점점 더 밀려나게 됩니다.

이때 전장의 중심에 서 있는 인물이 있습니다. 그는 트로이의 왕자 헥토르였습니다. 헥토르는 트로이 군대를 이끄는 가장 뛰어난 전사였습니다. 그는 자신의 도시와 가족을 지키기 위해 싸우고 있었습니다.

헥토르는 단순한 영웅이 아니라 책임을 지는 전사였습니다. 그는 자신의 운명이 전쟁과 함께 묶여 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 언제나 전장의 가장 앞에 서 있었습니다. 그의 싸움은 개인의 영광이 아니라 도시의 생존을 위한 것이었습니다.

헥토르가 이끄는 트로이 군대

아킬레우스가 없는 동안 전쟁의 흐름은 점점 트로이 쪽으로 기울어 갑니다. 그리스 군대의 진영까지 위협받기 시작합니다. 전선은 점점 뒤로 밀려납니다. 전쟁은 새로운 방향으로 움직이기 시작합니다.

일리아드는 이 장면을 통해 전쟁의 균형이 얼마나 쉽게 흔들리는지를 보여 줍니다. 한 사람의 부재가 전체 전쟁의 흐름을 바꿀 수 있습니다. 영웅은 단지 개인이 아니라 전장의 중심이기도 합니다. 그 중심이 사라질 때 전쟁의 모습도 달라집니다.

그러나 이 이야기는 단순한 승패의 문제가 아닙니다. 전쟁 속에서 각 사람은 서로 다른 이유로 싸우고 있습니다. 누군가는 명예를 위해 싸우고 누군가는 도시를 위해 싸웁니다. 그리고 누군가는 단지 살아남기 위해 싸웁니다.

그래서 일리아드는 전쟁의 또 다른 질문을 던집니다. 전쟁을 움직이는 것은 힘인가 책임인가. 영웅의 분노인가 도시의 운명인가? 이 질문은 오래된 서사 속에서 지금까지 이어지고 있습니다.
