The Iliad Episode 4 – The Battles Around the Ships

The Trojans advance toward the Greek ships, and the war reaches the edge of disaster while Achilles remains away from battle.

After Achilles withdraws from the fighting, the Greek army begins to feel the full cost of his absence. The Trojans press harder across the battlefield, and the Greeks are pushed back toward the ships that brought them to Troy. The war no longer remains at a distance before the city walls. It moves toward the Greek camp itself. As the Trojans approach the ships, the Greeks face the possibility that their entire expedition may collapse before Achilles returns.

The Trojan Advance

The Trojan advance changes the shape of the war. For a long time, the Greeks have fought before Troy as attackers, holding their camp near the shore while threatening the city. Now the pressure begins to move in the opposite direction. The Trojans leave the protection of their walls and drive the Greeks back toward the sea.

This movement matters because it reverses the confidence of the Greek army. The men who came to conquer Troy now struggle to protect their own ships. The battlefield no longer feels like a place of Greek ambition. It becomes a place where the Greeks must fight to keep their path home from being destroyed.

Hector stands at the center of this advance. He urges the Trojans forward and becomes the visible force pressing against the Greek line. His courage gives strength to the defenders of Troy, and his presence reminds the Greeks that Achilles is no longer there to hold him back. The balance of fear begins to shift.

The Trojans do not advance as distant figures in a heroic story. They move as men defending a city that has endured years of siege. Their attack carries the desperation of people who see a chance to push the enemy away from their walls. The war has not ended, but for a moment Troy begins to breathe with new force.

For the Greeks, the Trojan advance exposes the damage caused by internal division. Achilles’ anger began as a quarrel over honor, but its consequences now appear in the movement of armies. A private conflict inside the Greek camp has opened the way for public danger on the battlefield.

The Greek Army in Crisis

As the Trojans push forward, the Greek army enters a state of crisis. The soldiers are forced back toward the ships, and the camp that once seemed secure becomes vulnerable. The Greeks are no longer thinking only of victory. They must now think about survival.

The ships are more than military equipment. They are the Greeks’ connection to home, retreat, and return. If the ships are destroyed, the army will be trapped before Troy with no way back across the sea. The danger therefore reaches beyond one battle. It threatens the entire purpose and future of the Greek expedition.

The crisis also reveals the limits of command. Agamemnon may still lead the army, but authority alone cannot replace the strength of Achilles. Other warriors fight bravely, yet the absence of the greatest fighter remains visible. The Greek army has structure, leaders, and numbers, but it has lost the warrior whose presence once held terror in the Trojan mind.

Fear spreads because every soldier can see the line moving backward. The danger is no longer abstract. It comes closer with every charge, every fallen comrade, and every shout from the Trojan side. The camp becomes a place where the consequences of pride are measured in bodies and distance.

This crisis forces the Greeks to confront what Achilles’ withdrawal truly means. It is not merely the absence of one man from battle. It is the removal of a force around which the army’s confidence had been built. Without him, the Greeks must face the war as a wounded and divided body.

Fire at the Edge of the Camp

The danger reaches its most frightening point when the Trojans threaten the Greek ships with fire. Fire near the ships means more than destruction of wood and rope. It means the possible end of the Greek army’s return, the collapse of its campaign, and the closing of the road back home.

The image of fire at the edge of the camp gives the war a new urgency. Until this point, Troy has been the city under threat. Now the Greek camp itself becomes the place that may burn. The violence that the Greeks brought to Troy turns back toward them and reaches the vessels that connect them to their own world.

The soldiers fight with desperation because the ships stand behind them like the last boundary. If that boundary falls, the army loses not only ground but future. The sea that once carried them to war may no longer carry them away. Every flame near the ships becomes a sign that the expedition is nearing ruin.

Achilles remains away from the battle while this danger grows. His absence becomes heavier as the crisis deepens. The Greeks suffer because of Trojan strength, but also because their own greatest warrior has chosen not to fight. The camp burns under the shadow of a quarrel that has not been healed.

The fourth episode of the Iliad brings the war to the edge of catastrophe. The Trojans have advanced, the Greeks have been driven back, and the ships stand under threat. The story now moves toward the moment when someone close to Achilles will try to fill the space he has left behind, and that choice will lead to a death that changes the entire poem.
