The Iliad Episode 4 – Patroclus and Hector

Patroclus enters the battle wearing Achilles’ armor and is killed by Hector, changing the direction of the war.

After Achilles withdrew from the battlefield, the Greek army gradually began to lose ground. The Trojans gained control of the field, and Hector advanced at the center of their forces, leading his soldiers forward. The balance of the war gradually began to tilt toward Troy. In the Greek camp, a quiet fear began to spread.

Patroclus Enters the Battle

Achilles still refused to return to battle, but his closest companion Patroclus watched the suffering of the army and made a decision. He asked Achilles to lend him his armor. If he entered the battlefield wearing the armor of Achilles, the Greek soldiers might believe their greatest warrior had returned. At last Achilles agreed.

Patroclus entered the battlefield wearing Achilles’ armor. When the Greek soldiers saw him, they believed Achilles had returned and their courage rose again. The battle grew fierce once more, and the Greeks began to push the Trojans back. For a moment, the course of the battle seemed to change.

But Patroclus was not Achilles. He fought bravely, yet in the heart of the battlefield he finally faced Hector. The strongest warrior of Troy now stood before the friend of Achilles. Their meeting was inevitable.

Hector and the Death of Patroclus

The fight did not last long. Hector struck Patroclus down. In the dust of the battlefield the warrior wearing the armor of Achilles fell, and for a moment the field seemed to fall into silence. Soon Hector realized that the man he had killed was not Achilles.

The death of Patroclus was not simply the result of a battle. It became the event that changed the direction of the war. The Greek army was shaken, and the news soon reached Achilles. Far from the battlefield, the time of Achilles began to move again.

For Achilles, Patroclus was more than a companion in war. He was the friend who had grown up beside him since youth. His death filled Achilles with a grief and anger deeper than the war itself. From that moment, the war began to move toward another destiny.

The Iliad shows something important in this moment. Wars are not moved only by armies and strategies. Human grief, anger, and the loss of those we love can also change the course of history. The death of Patroclus becomes the moment that calls Achilles back to the battlefield.

아킬레우스가 전장에서 물러난 이후 그리스 군대는 점점 밀리기 시작합니다. 트로이의 군대는 전장을 장악하고, 헥토르는 그 중심에서 병사들을 이끌며 전진합니다. 전쟁의 균형은 조금씩 트로이 쪽으로 기울어 가고 있었습니다. 그리스 진영에서는 더 이상 버티기 어렵다는 불안이 퍼지기 시작합니다.

파트로클로스가 전장에 나서다

아킬레우스는 여전히 싸움을 거부하고 있었지만, 그의 가장 가까운 친구 파트로클로스는 전장의 상황을 지켜보며 결정을 내립니다. 그는 아킬레우스에게 자신의 갑옷을 빌려 달라고 요청합니다. 아킬레우스의 갑옷을 입고 전장에 나가면 그리스 군대의 사기가 다시 살아날 것이라고 생각했기 때문입니다. 결국 아킬레우스는 그 요청을 받아들입니다.

파트로클로스는 아킬레우스의 갑옷을 입고 전장으로 나아갑니다. 그 모습을 본 그리스 군대는 아킬레우스가 돌아왔다고 믿고 다시 힘을 얻습니다. 전장은 다시 격렬해지고, 그리스 군대는 트로이 군대를 밀어내기 시작합니다. 한 사람의 등장만으로 전장의 흐름이 바뀌는 순간이었습니다.

그러나 파트로클로스는 아킬레우스가 아니었습니다. 그는 용감하게 싸웠지만 전장의 중심에서 결국 헥토르와 마주하게 됩니다. 트로이의 가장 강한 전사와 아킬레우스의 친구가 전장에서 서로를 향해 서게 된 것입니다. 그 만남은 피할 수 없는 순간이었습니다.

헥토르와 파트로클로스의 죽음
