The Iliad Episode 5 – Priam and Achilles

Priam meets Achilles to recover Hector’s body, revealing human grief beyond the violence of war.

After Hector’s death, the war did not end. Yet for Priam, the king of Troy, the war had already become a time in which he had lost everything. He had lost Hector, the son he loved most, and the body of that son remained in the Greek camp. For the old king, only one wish remained in his heart. He wanted to recover the body of his son.

Priam Enters the Greek Camp

Priam sets out for the Greek camp at night, risking his life. He does not leave as a king dressed in royal garments, but as an old father. Even as he enters the heart of the war, his thoughts remain fixed on one thing. He wants to bring back his son’s body and give him a proper funeral.

At last he arrives at the tent of Achilles. There he kneels before him. In front of the warrior who killed his son, he stands not as a king but as a father. He asks Achilles to think of his own father, and to remember what it means to be a father who has lost a son.

Achilles Returns Hector’s Body

At that moment the language of war pauses. In the midst of a battlefield filled with revenge and anger, human grief begins to speak. The words of Priam shake the heart of Achilles. He remembers his own father, Peleus.

Achilles returns the body of Hector to Priam. The two men sit for a moment in silence, looking at one another. They had been enemies, yet in that moment they were simply human beings who shared the same grief. The war continues, but for that night another kind of time begins to flow.

Grief and Compassion in the Iliad

The Iliad ends with this scene. The final moment is not the victory of a hero, but the tears of a father. Even within the story of war, it shows that human sorrow and compassion still remain.

This scene asks what war ultimately leaves behind. It suggests that beyond victory and defeat, there remains the possibility that human beings can understand one another. The meeting between Priam and Achilles becomes a quiet answer to that question.

프리아모스는 위험을 무릅쓰고 밤에 그리스 진영으로 향합니다. 그는 왕의 옷이 아니라 늙은 아버지의 마음으로 길을 떠납니다. 전쟁의 한가운데로 들어가면서도 그의 생각은 오직 하나였습니다. 아들의 시신을 돌려받아 제대로 장례를 치르는 것이었습니다.

그는 마침내 아킬레우스의 천막에 도착합니다. 그리고 그 앞에서 무릎을 꿇습니다. 자신의 아들을 죽인 전사 앞에서 한 왕이 아니라 한 아버지로 서게 된 것입니다. 그는 아킬레우스에게 말합니다. 당신의 아버지를 생각해 보라고, 그리고 아들을 잃은 한 아버지의 마음을 생각해 보라고.

아킬레우스가 헥토르의 시신을 돌려주다
