After the Li Ling incident, Sima Qian chooses to endure punishment and continue writing Shiji.

The story of Sima Qian does not begin with personal misfortune. It begins with the decision of whether to continue recording or to stop. He was not merely a historian but the Grand Historian responsible for the records of the state. This position required constant choices between power and truth.

The punishment of Sima Qian – Emperor Wu and the Li Ling incident

The Li Ling incident becomes the decisive moment that changes Sima Qian’s life. After Li Ling was defeated in battle against the Xiongnu, the court condemned him as a traitor. While most officials remained silent or joined the criticism, Sima Qian defended Li Ling. This choice led directly to the emperor’s anger.

Sima Qian could have made a different decision before power. He could have remained silent or followed the majority. However, he spoke according to fact and judgment. As a result, he was sentenced to the extreme punishment of castration.

The choice of Sima Qian – writing Shiji after punishment

After the punishment, Sima Qian was left with two choices. One was to choose death and end his humiliation. The other was to survive and complete his record. He chose the latter.

This decision was not merely survival. He transformed his personal suffering into a reason to continue recording. He set a purpose beyond his own disgrace. Shiji begins again from this choice.

The beginning of Shiji – setting the direction of record

Sima Qian establishes a clear direction for his writing. He does not write history from the perspective of power. He reconstructs history around human choices and their consequences. This becomes a different standard from earlier historical writing.
