The Records of the Grand Historian Episode 2 – Xiang Yu and the Last Battle at Gaixia
Xiang Yu realizes the world around him no longer belongs to Chu long before the battle itself comes to an end.
Night spreads slowly across the battlefield at Gaixia while fires burn along the surrounding hills. From every direction, soldiers of the Han army begin singing the songs of Chu. The sound moves through the darkness and reaches the isolated camp at the center of the battlefield. Xiang Yu’s remaining soldiers listen in silence, believing their homeland has already fallen. Before the final attack even begins, the war has already entered the minds of the men trapped inside the encirclement.
The struggle between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang has already reshaped the world for years. Kingdoms collapse, alliances shift, and entire armies disappear during the long Chu–Han Contention. Yet the final stage of the conflict no longer depends only on military strength. At Gaixia, the war begins turning into a struggle between collapsing momentum and an emerging political order.
The Battle of Gaixia – The Final Stage of the Chu–Han Contention
By the time the battle reaches Gaixia, Xiang Yu is completely surrounded. Liu Bang’s forces close the remaining paths one after another while supply lines disappear behind the advancing Han armies. The Chu forces still contain experienced warriors, but exhaustion and isolation have already weakened the army before the decisive clash begins.
The battlefield itself reflects the changing balance of power. Xiang Yu once dominates China through overwhelming force and personal charisma. Earlier battles establish his reputation as an almost unstoppable commander. Yet at Gaixia, strength alone can no longer reverse the larger movement surrounding him. The structure of the war has already shifted against Chu.
Then the songs begin. Han soldiers sing the music of Chu from every side of the battlefield. The strategy strikes directly at memory and fear rather than physical defense. Soldiers inside Xiang Yu’s camp begin believing their homeland has already been conquered. The sound spreading through the darkness weakens morale before swords even meet again.
Victory no longer depends only on battlefield force. Perception itself becomes part of strategy. The psychological collapse inside the camp reveals that armies can begin disintegrating long before the final defeat officially arrives.
Xiang Yu and Liu Bang – Two Different Structures of Power
The conflict between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang grows far beyond a personal rivalry between two leaders. Each man represents a different way of building power during the collapse of the Qin world. Xiang Yu rises through aristocratic heritage, military brilliance, and overwhelming personal strength. His authority depends heavily on direct loyalty and fear created through victory.
Liu Bang develops power differently. He is not remembered as the greatest warrior on the battlefield, nor does he dominate through heroic presence alone. Instead, he gathers strategists, administrators, generals, and advisers capable of building stable political structures around him. His strength grows through organization and cooperation rather than individual force.
This difference slowly determines the direction of the war. Xiang Yu repeatedly wins spectacular battles but struggles to transform victory into lasting stability. Territory gained through force becomes difficult to hold together. Liu Bang sometimes suffers military defeat, yet the larger structure around him continues surviving and expanding.
As the war continues, more leaders and populations begin moving toward the side capable of maintaining long-term order. At Gaixia, that movement finally reaches its conclusion. Individual strength remains terrifying, but structure ultimately survives longer than personal power.
The Death of Xiang Yu – Defeat and Final Choice
Even after escaping the center of the battlefield, Xiang Yu still has a chance to survive. Some followers urge him to cross the river and begin rebuilding his strength elsewhere. Escape remains possible for a brief moment. The war has not yet physically trapped him completely.
Yet Xiang Yu refuses that path. He does not choose retreat or reconstruction after defeat. Instead, he accepts the collapse of Chu and prepares for death. His decision emerges not only from military loss, but from the values shaping his identity throughout the war. For Xiang Yu, survival without honor no longer holds meaning.
Even in defeat, Xiang Yu continues fighting while vastly outnumbered. The war strips away armies, territory, and authority until only personal choice remains. In that final moment, he chooses the ending he believes matches his life.
The world around him changes irreversibly, yet he still preserves the ability to decide how he will face its end. Power disappears, kingdoms collapse, and armies scatter, but the human capacity for choice survives until the final moment.
What Remains After the Fall of Power
Wars do not end only through force. They end when one structure of power can no longer sustain itself against another.
Xiang Yu’s strength dominates battlefields for years, yet military brilliance alone fails to preserve lasting order. Liu Bang survives not because he is individually stronger in every moment, but because the structure surrounding him endures exhaustion, uncertainty, and time more effectively. The Chu–Han Contention gradually becomes more than a struggle between armies. It turns into a transition between two different political worlds.
Even after defeat becomes unavoidable, Xiang Yu still faces one final decision. He cannot preserve his kingdom, but he can still determine the form of his ending. After the collapse of power, the last thing remaining to him is choice itself.
Force, memory, fear, loyalty, and identity collapse together beneath the pressure of historical change. Xiang Yu loses the world surrounding him, yet his final decision continues surviving inside the record long after the battlefield itself disappears.
History does not preserve only those who win. Sometimes it remembers most clearly the people who reveal what human beings choose when everything else has already been lost.

항우의 죽음 – 패배와 마지막 선택
해하를 빠져나온 뒤에도 항우에게는 살아남을 가능성이 남아 있었습니다. 주변 사람들은 강을 건너 다시 세력을 모으자고 말합니다. 짧은 순간이지만 그는 여전히 도망쳐 새로운 시작을 선택할 수 있는 위치에 있습니다.
그러나 항우는 그 길을 선택하지 않습니다. 그는 패배 이후의 재건이나 후퇴 대신 초나라의 몰락 자체를 받아들이기로 합니다. 그의 결정은 단순한 군사적 패배 때문만이 아닙니다. 그것은 오랫동안 자신을 지탱해 온 가치와도 연결되어 있습니다. 항우에게 명예 없는 생존은 더 이상 의미를 가질 수 없었습니다.
완전히 포위된 상황 속에서도 항우는 끝까지 싸움을 멈추지 않습니다. 전쟁은 군대와 영토, 권력까지 하나씩 벗겨 내고 마지막에는 인간 자신의 선택만 남깁니다. 항우는 결국 자신의 삶에 어울린다고 믿는 방식으로 마지막을 선택합니다.
세계는 이미 되돌릴 수 없이 변해 버렸지만, 그는 마지막 순간까지 자신의 끝을 결정할 수 있는 힘만은 남겨 둡니다. 권력은 무너지고 군대와 나라가 사라져도, 인간은 마지막 순간까지 선택할 수 있는 존재로 남게 됩니다.
권력이 무너진 뒤 남는 것
전쟁은 단순히 힘으로만 끝나지 않습니다. 한 권력 구조가 더 이상 자신을 유지할 수 없게 되는 순간, 전쟁의 방향도 함께 무너지기 시작합니다.
항우의 힘은 오랫동안 전장을 지배했지만, 개인의 강함만으로는 오래 지속될 질서를 만들 수 없었습니다. 유방은 모든 순간에서 더 강한 인간이었기 때문에 살아남은 것이 아니라, 자신을 둘러싼 구조가 피로와 혼란, 시간을 더 오래 견뎌 냈기 때문에 끝내 살아남게 됩니다. 초한전쟁은 결국 두 군대의 싸움을 넘어 두 개의 정치 질서가 교체되는 과정으로 변해 갑니다.
패배가 피할 수 없게 된 순간에도 항우 앞에는 마지막 선택이 남아 있습니다. 그는 나라를 지킬 수는 없지만, 자신의 마지막을 어떤 방식으로 맞이할지는 여전히 결정할 수 있습니다. 권력이 모두 무너진 뒤에도 인간에게 끝까지 남는 것은 결국 선택입니다.
힘과 기억, 두려움과 충성, 정체성과 몰락은 역사 변화의 압력 속에서 함께 무너져 내립니다. 항우는 자신이 알던 세계를 잃어버리지만, 그의 마지막 선택만은 전장이 사라진 뒤에도 기록 속에 계속 남게 됩니다.
역사는 승리한 인간들만 남기지 않습니다. 때로는 모든 것을 잃어버린 순간 인간이 무엇을 선택하는가를 가장 선명하게 보여 준 사람들을 더 오래 기억합니다.
