On the night of the Battle of Gaixia, the mighty warrior Xiang Yu stands isolated in the center with a dwindling group of loyal soldiers, while the surrounding Han forces sing the songs of Chu from all directions. The darkness of the battlefield is pierced only by the cold moonlight and the flickering orange glow of scattered torches, revealing the exhaustion of the trapped army. The scene visualizes the haunting moment when war shifts from physical combat to psychological warfare, signaling the inevitable end of a great hegemon as the spirit of his troops dissolves into the haunting melodies of their homeland.


The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) Episode 2 – Xiang Yu and the Last Battle at Gaixia

At Gaixia, Xiang Yu is defeated and chooses death instead of survival after losing the war.


The final stage of the Chu–Han Contention is not merely the end of a war. It is the moment that determines who will hold power in a new era. The rivalry between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang had shaken the center of the world for years. At Gaixia, that long conflict finally moves toward its conclusion.


The Battle of Gaixia – the final phase of the Chu–Han Contention

The battle of Gaixia begins with Xiang Yu completely isolated. The forces of Liu Bang surround him from all sides and tighten their control. Outnumbered and cut off from supplies, Xiang Yu can no longer reverse the course of the war. The structure of the battlefield itself has already determined the outcome.

At night, the Han army begins to sing the songs of Chu. Surrounded on all sides, Xiang Yu’s soldiers believe that their homeland has already fallen. This becomes a psychological strategy that breaks morale before the battle is decided. The war shifts from force to perception.


The structure of the war – Xiang Yu and Liu Bang

The conflict between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang is not simply a personal rivalry. It is a clash between two different structures of power. Xiang Yu represents aristocratic authority and personal strength. Liu Bang expands his power through organization and the use of capable people.

This difference determines the flow of the war. Xiang Yu dominates individual battles but fails to build a lasting structure. Liu Bang sometimes loses in combat but designs the overall direction of the war. In the end, power moves toward structure rather than individual force.


The death of Xiang Yu – defeat and choice

After escaping Gaixia, Xiang Yu still has the possibility of survival. However, he does not choose to cross the river and begin again. He accepts his defeat and decides to end his life. This decision is not simply the result of loss.

Xiang Yu’s death reflects his own values. He chooses an end that aligns with his way rather than a life after defeat. It reveals that even after power is lost, human choice remains. The war ends, but choice continues.

Shiji Episode 2 reveals a clear structure. Wars begin with force but end through structure. And at the end of that process, humans face their final decisions. 항우와 유방의 경쟁은 단순한 개인의 대결이 아니었습니다. 그것은 서로 다른 권력 구조의 충돌이었습니다. 항우는 귀족적 질서와 개인의 힘에 기반한 지배를 보여줍니다. 반면 유방은 인재를 활용하고 조직을 구축하는 방식으로 권력을 확장합니다.
