After the death of Enkidu, the life of Gilgamesh changes completely. He witnesses the death of his closest friend and begins to reflect deeply on the fate awaiting all human beings. Until this moment, his life had been filled with battle, glory, and heroic achievement. Now a different question begins dominating his thoughts.
The death of Enkidu transforms the meaning of the entire story. The epic no longer centers only on heroic strength or victory over monsters. Instead, it begins confronting mortality itself. Gilgamesh realizes that even the strongest hero cannot ultimately escape death.
This realization creates fear within him for the first time. Until now, Gilgamesh moved forward as though strength alone could overcome every obstacle. Yet the death of Enkidu reveals a limit that courage and power cannot defeat. Human beings may achieve glory, but they still remain mortal.
From this moment onward, Gilgamesh no longer travels as a conqueror seeking fame. He begins traveling as a human being searching for an answer. The epic gradually changes from a story of heroic action into a journey about existence, mortality, and the limits of human life.

For this reason, he decides to leave Uruk and begin a long journey. The road before him stretches far beyond the lands familiar to ordinary human beings. It leads toward distant mountains, deserts, darkness, and places few people have ever reached.
Gilgamesh abandons the comfort of his palace and throne in order to pursue this answer. His journey is no longer driven by glory or conquest. Instead, it is driven by fear, grief, and the desperate hope that death might somehow be overcome.
The story now changes direction completely. Gilgamesh no longer seeks victory over enemies. He seeks an answer to the deepest question within human existence itself.
The Long Journey of Gilgamesh in Search of the Answer to Immortality
