Mahabharata Episode 2 – The Game of Dice

The game of dice leads the Pandavas to lose their kingdom, power, and freedom through deception.

The rivalry that had grown within the Kuru dynasty deepens over time. The Pandava and Kaurava brothers grow beyond childhood and become figures with their own power and reputation. The two families still belong to the same royal house, yet the tension over power continues to grow. This conflict does not immediately lead to war. Instead, a single event becomes the moment that causes the tension to erupt. That event does not take place on a battlefield but in a royal court. It is the game of dice.

The Court of Hastinapura

The Pandava brothers establish their own kingdom in Indraprastha and gradually become stronger. Their fame and power begin to grow quickly. Many kings and warriors come to recognize their strength. Seeing this, Duryodhana begins to feel deep anxiety.

He believes that the Pandava brothers will eventually take the central power of the Kuru dynasty. For this reason he invites the Pandava brothers to the royal court of Hastinapura. On the surface it appears to be a royal gathering. However, another intention lies behind this invitation.

Shakuni’s Dice

At the court Duryodhana proposes a game of dice to Yudhishthira. Because the proposal is made in the center of the royal court where kings and warriors are gathered, Yudhishthira cannot easily refuse it. As a king he accepts the invitation. In this way the game of dice begins.

However, the game is not a fair one. Shakuni, the uncle of Duryodhana, is highly skilled in the game of dice. He is able to manipulate the results of the dice. Shakuni plays the game on behalf of Duryodhana.

The Defeat of the Pandavas

As the game continues the stakes gradually grow larger. At first jewels and wealth are placed at stake. As time passes the stakes expand to kingdoms and power. Yudhishthira cannot stop the game.

Eventually he places his kingdom and even his brothers at stake. At the end he wagers himself as well. The dice continue to be thrown and the results continue to favor Shakuni. In the end the Pandava brothers lose everything.

The Humiliation of Draupadi

After the game ends Duryodhana orders that Draupadi, the wife of the Pandava brothers, be brought into the court. In the center of the assembly where kings and warriors are gathered she is humiliated. Many people are present there, yet no one easily speaks.

Draupadi asks an important question at that moment. She asks whether a man who has already lost himself has the right to wager another person. That question brings the entire court into silence. This event shows that the conflict within the Kuru dynasty has now entered a stage from which it cannot return.

마하바라타 2화 – 주사위의 게임

주사위 게임은 판다바 형제들이 속임수 속에서 왕국과 권력, 그리고 자유를 잃게 만드는 사건이 됩니다.

쿠루 왕가 안에서 자라난 경쟁은 시간이 지나면서 점점 더 깊어집니다. 판다바와 카우라바 형제들은 이제 어린 시절을 지나 각자의 세력과 명성을 가진 인물로 성장합니다. 두 가문은 같은 왕가에 속해 있었지만 권력을 둘러싼 긴장은 점점 더 커지고 있었습니다. 이 갈등은 전쟁으로 바로 이어지지 않습니다. 대신 한 번의 사건이 그 갈등을 폭발시키는 계기가 됩니다. 그 사건은 전장이 아니라 궁정에서 벌어집니다. 그것이 바로 주사위의 게임입니다.

하스티나푸라 궁정

판다바 형제들은 인드라프라스타에서 자신들의 왕국을 세우고 점점 더 강해집니다. 그들의 명성과 권력은 빠르게 커지기 시작합니다. 많은 왕과 전사들이 그들의 힘을 인정하게 됩니다. 이 상황을 지켜보던 두료다나는 깊은 불안을 느끼게 됩니다.

그는 판다바 형제들이 결국 쿠루 왕가의 중심 권력을 차지하게 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 그는 판다바 형제들을 하스티나푸라 궁정으로 초대합니다. 겉으로는 왕가의 연회처럼 보이는 자리였습니다. 그러나 그 초대에는 다른 의도가 숨어 있었습니다.

샤쿠니의 주사위

궁정에서 두료다나는 유디슈티라에게 주사위 게임을 제안합니다. 왕과 전사들이 모여 있는 궁정 한가운데에서 이루어지는 제안이었기 때문에 유디슈티라는 그 제안을 쉽게 거절할 수 없었습니다. 그는 왕으로서 그 초대를 받아들입니다. 이렇게 해서 주사위 게임이 시작됩니다.

그러나 이 게임은 공정한 게임이 아니었습니다. 두료다나의 외삼촌 샤쿠니는 주사위 게임에 매우 능숙한 사람이었습니다. 그는 주사위를 이용해 결과를 마음대로 바꿀 수 있었습니다. 샤쿠니는 두료다나를 대신해 게임을 진행합니다.

판다바의 패배

게임이 계속되면서 판돈은 점점 커지기 시작합니다. 처음에는 보석과 재산이 걸립니다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 판돈은 왕국과 권력으로 커집니다. 유디슈티라는 게임을 멈추지 못합니다.

결국 그는 자신의 왕국과 형제들까지 게임에 걸게 됩니다. 마지막에는 자신까지 게임에 걸게 됩니다. 주사위는 계속 던져지고 결과는 계속 샤쿠니에게 유리하게 나옵니다. 판다바 형제들은 결국 모든 것을 잃게 됩니다.

드라우파디의 모욕

게임이 끝난 뒤 두료다나는 판다바 형제들의 아내 드라우파디를 궁정으로 끌어오라고 명령합니다. 왕과 전사들이 모여 있는 सभा 한가운데에서 그녀는 모욕을 당하게 됩니다. 많은 사람들이 그 자리에 있었지만 누구도 쉽게 말을 하지 못합니다.

드라우파디는 그 자리에서 중요한 질문을 던집니다. 이미 자신을 잃은 사람이 다른 사람을 다시 걸 수 있는가라는 질문이었습니다. 그 질문은 सभा 전체를 침묵하게 만듭니다. 이 사건은 쿠루 왕가의 갈등이 더 이상 되돌릴 수 없는 단계로 들어갔다는 것을 보여 줍니다.
