Mahabharata Episode 3 – The Princes Who Departed for the Forest

 

Along a wide forest path, the Pandava brothers and Draupadi walk slowly away from the world they once ruled. They no longer wear royal clothing and instead appear in simple garments suited for exile and wandering. At the front walks Yudhishthira in silence while Bhima, Arjuna, and the other brothers follow behind him. Draupadi walks beside them beneath the shadow of the forest trees. Far in the distance, the fading outline of the palace of Hastinapura can still be seen, while ahead of them stretches the vast wilderness of exile. The scene captures the moment when princes leave behind royal life and step into the uncertain years that will eventually lead toward war.

Mahabharata Episode 3 – The Princes Who Departed for the Forest

After losing everything in the game of dice, the Pandava brothers leave the palace and begin a long exile that will eventually lead toward war.

After the game of dice ends, the conflict within the Kuru dynasty can no longer remain hidden beneath royal ceremony and tradition. The Pandava brothers lose not only their kingdom but also their political authority and place within the royal court. What began as rivalry inside a palace has now become open humiliation and separation. Forced away from the center of power, the Pandavas must leave behind the world where they once ruled. Their departure marks not simply defeat, but the beginning of a long exile that will eventually shape the future of the entire dynasty.

The Exile of the Pandavas

As a result of the game of dice, the Pandava brothers are sentenced to live in exile for many years. The princes who once ruled a prosperous kingdom must now abandon their palace, wealth, and political power. For men raised within royal authority, the exile becomes a dramatic transformation of life itself.

The Pandavas leave the royal court together with Draupadi. As they depart from Hastinapura, many people watch them in silence and sorrow. The princes who once stood at the center of royal power now walk away from the palace without armies, wealth, or protection. The humiliation of the court continues to follow them even as they leave the city behind.

Yet despite the loss surrounding them, the brothers remain together. Yudhishthira leads the journey calmly while Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva continue beside him. Draupadi also walks with them into the uncertainty of exile rather than remaining behind within the royal world that betrayed her.

The departure of the Pandavas becomes one of the great turning points of the Mahabharata. From this moment onward, the princes are no longer simply rivals within a royal family. They become exiles carrying humiliation, memory, and the unresolved conflict of the Kuru dynasty into the wilderness.

Time in the Forest

Life in the forest is completely different from life inside the royal court. The Pandava brothers can no longer live as kings surrounded by wealth, servants, and ceremony. Instead they must survive as wanderers moving through forests, mountains, and remote places far from the center of political power.

The exile becomes a long period of endurance and patience. The brothers must adjust to hardship, uncertainty, and separation from the kingdom they once ruled. Daily life now depends not upon royal authority but upon survival within the natural world.

Yet the forest does not become only a place of suffering. During their years of exile, the Pandavas encounter sages, ascetics, warriors, and wandering teachers who share knowledge and wisdom with them. Through these meetings, the brothers gain new understanding about warfare, duty, human life, and spiritual discipline.

In this way the exile slowly changes meaning. What first appeared only as punishment gradually becomes a period of preparation. The years spent in the wilderness begin shaping the strength, knowledge, and determination that the Pandavas will later carry into the coming war.

Princes Waiting for the Day of Return

The exile imposed upon the Pandavas has a fixed period of time. The brothers know that one day they will be allowed to return from the forest. Yet they also understand that returning peacefully may no longer be possible. The conflict within the Kuru dynasty has already grown too deep to disappear easily.

While living in exile, the Pandavas slowly gather strength once again. They continue training, learning, and preparing themselves for the future that awaits them beyond the forest. The humiliation they experienced inside the royal court remains alive within their memory.

At the same time, the tension between the Pandavas and the Kauravas continues growing even while they remain separated. The exile does not heal the conflict. Instead it allows resentment, ambition, and the desire for justice to deepen over time.

The story of the Pandavas is therefore far from finished. The years spent waiting in the forest become part of the long path leading toward Kurukshetra. The princes who departed into exile will eventually return to face the war that has been slowly approaching since the beginning of the Mahabharata.

마하바라타 3화 – 숲으로 떠난 왕자들

주사위 게임에서 모든 것을 잃은 판다바 형제들은 왕궁을 떠나 긴 유배의 시간을 시작하게 됩니다.

주사위 게임이 끝난 뒤 쿠루 왕조 안의 갈등은 더 이상 숨겨질 수 없는 상태에 이르게 됩니다. 판다바 형제들은 왕국과 권력, 궁정 안에서의 위치까지 모두 잃게 됩니다. 왕궁 안에서 시작된 경쟁은 이제 공개적인 패배와 추방으로 바뀌게 됩니다. 왕실 중심에서 밀려난 판다바 형제들은 자신들이 지배하던 세계를 뒤로한 채 떠나야만 했습니다. 그들의 떠남은 단순한 패배가 아니라 앞으로 왕조 전체의 운명을 바꾸게 될 긴 유배의 시작이 됩니다.

판다바의 유배

주사위 게임의 결과로 판다바 형제들은 오랜 세월 동안 유배 생활을 해야 하는 처지에 놓이게 됩니다. 한때 번영하는 왕국을 다스리던 왕자들은 이제 궁전과 재산, 정치적 권력을 모두 버리고 떠나야 했습니다. 왕실의 권위 속에서 살아가던 이들에게 유배는 삶 자체를 완전히 바꾸는 사건이었습니다.

판다바 형제들은 드라우파디와 함께 하스티나푸라를 떠나게 됩니다. 그들이 궁전을 떠나는 모습을 많은 사람들이 슬픔과 침묵 속에서 바라보게 됩니다. 한때 왕국 중심에 서 있던 왕자들은 이제 군대와 권력, 보호도 없이 숲길 위를 걸어가야 하는 처지가 되었습니다. 궁정에서 겪은 모욕 역시 그들의 뒤를 계속 따라오고 있었습니다.

그러나 모든 것을 잃은 상황 속에서도 형제들은 서로 곁을 떠나지 않았습니다. 유디슈티라는 침착하게 길을 이끌었고, 비마와 아르주나, 나쿨라와 사하데바 역시 함께 걸어갑니다. 드라우파디 또한 자신을 모욕했던 왕궁에 남는 대신 판다바 형제들과 함께 유배의 길을 선택하게 됩니다.

판다바의 떠남은 마하바라타 전체에서 중요한 전환점이 됩니다. 이 순간 이후 판다바 형제들은 더 이상 단순히 왕실 안의 경쟁자가 아니라 굴욕과 상실, 그리고 해결되지 않은 갈등을 안은 채 숲 속으로 들어가는 추방자들이 됩니다.

숲 속의 시간

숲 속의 삶은 왕궁 안에서의 생활과 완전히 다른 세계였습니다. 판다바 형제들은 더 이상 부와 의식, 시종들 속에서 살아가는 왕이 아니었습니다. 이제 그들은 숲과 산, 외딴 지역을 떠돌며 살아가야 하는 방랑자의 삶을 받아들여야 했습니다.

유배의 시간은 긴 인내와 견딤의 시간이 됩니다. 형제들은 고난과 불확실함, 그리고 자신들이 다스리던 왕국과 떨어져 살아가는 현실에 적응해야 했습니다. 하루하루의 삶은 더 이상 왕실의 권위가 아니라 자연 속에서의 생존에 의존하게 됩니다.

그러나 숲은 단순한 고통의 장소만은 아니었습니다. 유배 기간 동안 판다바 형제들은 수많은 현자와 수행자, 전사와 방랑하는 스승들을 만나게 됩니다. 그들과의 만남 속에서 형제들은 전쟁과 의무, 인간 삶과 정신적 수련에 대한 새로운 지식과 경험을 얻게 됩니다.

이렇게 유배는 점점 다른 의미를 가지기 시작합니다. 처음에는 단순한 처벌처럼 보였던 시간은 이후 다가올 미래를 준비하는 과정으로 변해 갑니다. 숲 속에서 견딘 세월은 판다바 형제들에게 더 강한 의지와 경험을 남기게 됩니다.

돌아올 날을 기다리는 왕자들

판다바 형제들에게 내려진 유배에는 정해진 시간이 있었습니다. 형제들은 언젠가 숲에서 돌아갈 수 있는 날이 올 것이라는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 동시에 그들은 평화롭게 돌아가는 길이 쉽지 않을 것이라는 점 역시 이해하고 있었습니다. 쿠루 왕조 안의 갈등은 이미 너무 깊어져 있었기 때문입니다.

유배 생활 속에서 판다바 형제들은 다시 힘을 모으기 시작합니다. 그들은 계속 훈련하고 배우며, 숲 바깥에서 자신들을 기다리고 있는 미래를 준비하게 됩니다. 궁정에서 겪었던 굴욕과 패배는 여전히 그들의 기억 속에 남아 있었습니다.

한편 판다바와 카우라바 사이의 긴장은 서로 떨어져 있는 동안에도 계속 커져 갑니다. 유배는 갈등을 끝내지 못했고, 오히려 분노와 욕망, 그리고 정의를 되찾으려는 의지를 더욱 깊게 만들게 됩니다.

판다바 형제들의 이야기는 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 숲 속에서 이어지는 기다림의 시간은 결국 쿠루크셰트라 전쟁으로 이어지는 긴 길의 일부가 됩니다. 왕궁을 떠나 숲으로 들어갔던 왕자들은 언젠가 다시 돌아와 자신들을 기다리고 있는 거대한 전쟁과 마주하게 될 것입니다.
