Oedipus solves the riddle of the Sphinx and becomes the savior of Thebes.

The city of Thebes had long been suffering because of a creature. The creature would pose a riddle to anyone who approached the city and kill those who failed to answer it. The roads to the city were blocked, and the people became trapped in fear. This situation was not merely a crisis but a condition that threatened the fate of the entire city.

The city of Thebes suffering from the Sphinx

The Sphinx is described as a being with the face of a human and the body of a lion. It stands on a high rock and guards the road, testing those who pass by. Its riddle is not a simple question but a condition that determines life and death. For this reason, no one could easily pass before it.

The city gradually becomes isolated. The people lose connection with the outside world, and fear grows within the city. Neither the king nor the citizens can find a solution. This condition leads to a structure in which the city could collapse on its own.

Oedipus solves the riddle of the Sphinx

Oedipus encounters this situation on his way to Thebes. He stands before the Sphinx and hears its riddle. The question asks what walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening. Oedipus answers that it is a human.

His answer is not merely knowledge but an understanding of human existence. Upon hearing the answer, the Sphinx can no longer threaten the city. The crisis is resolved without any battle. This moment stands as a scene where knowledge surpasses strength.

Oedipus as the savior of Thebes

스핑크스 때문에 고통받는 도시 테베
