Oedipus Episode 4 – The King of Thebes

Oedipus becomes king of Thebes and marries Jocasta, unknowingly fulfilling part of the prophecy.

The rise of Oedipus as king of Thebes

Thebes began to regain its peace after the death of the Sphinx. As the fear that had threatened the city disappeared, the people regained stability. At the center of this stood Oedipus, who had solved the riddle and saved the city. He was no longer a mere stranger but became the one who had saved Thebes.

The citizens of Thebes accepted him as their new king. It was the moment when the throne left empty after the death of King Laius was filled. Oedipus did not refuse this position and accepted it. This choice became the moment when he stepped deeper into his fate.

He became the king of Thebes and gained the power to rule the city. As king, he began just and capable rule. The citizens trusted his judgment, and the order of the city was quickly restored. Thebes became a city with a stable order once again.

Oedipus marries Jocasta

Oedipus married Queen Jocasta. She had been the wife of the former king Laius. This marriage was a choice that secured both political stability and the legitimacy of royal power. However, this choice had already been destined within the prophecy.

The two ruled the city together as king and queen. The citizens respected them and enjoyed a period of peace. Thebes entered a state of stability completely different from its previous crisis. On the surface, everything appeared to be properly in place.

The peace of Thebes and the hidden truth

However, this peace was not complete. The stability of the city was built upon an unseen past. A truth that even Oedipus himself did not know existed beneath it. Peace was a state that would last only until the truth was revealed.

This scene shows one structure. Humans create order through their choices, but they cannot know what results those choices will bring. Oedipus’s choices appear right, yet at the same time they complete the conditions of tragedy. Human action and fate are not separated here.

This story leaves a question. Even if humans make the right choices, are the results always right. The life of Oedipus reveals the limits of human beings through that question. Order is created by human choice, yet its foundation is always incomplete.

테베의 왕이 된 오이디푸스의 선택

테베는 스핑크스의 죽음 이후 다시 평화를 되찾기 시작합니다. 도시를 위협하던 공포가 사라지자 사람들은 안정을 되찾습니다. 그 중심에는 수수께끼를 풀고 도시를 구한 오이디푸스가 있었습니다. 그는 이제 단순한 이방인이 아니라 테베를 구한 존재가 됩니다.

테베의 시민들은 그를 새로운 왕으로 받아들입니다. 왕이었던 라이오스가 죽은 이후 비어 있던 자리가 채워지는 순간이었습니다. 오이디푸스는 그 자리를 거부하지 않고 받아들입니다. 이 선택은 그가 운명 안으로 더 깊이 들어가는 계기가 됩니다.

그는 테베의 왕이 되었고 도시를 다스리는 권력을 갖게 됩니다. 왕으로서 그는 정의롭고 유능한 통치를 시작합니다. 시민들은 그의 판단을 신뢰하며 도시의 질서는 빠르게 회복됩니다. 테베는 다시 안정된 질서를 갖춘 도시가 됩니다.

이오카스테와 결혼한 오이디푸스

오이디푸스는 왕비 이오카스테와 결혼합니다. 그녀는 이전 왕 라이오스의 아내였습니다. 이 결혼은 정치적 안정과 왕권의 정당성을 동시에 확보하는 선택이었습니다. 그러나 이 선택은 이미 예언 속에서 예정된 일이었습니다.

두 사람은 함께 왕과 왕비로서 도시를 이끌어 갑니다. 시민들은 그들을 존경하며 평화로운 시기를 누립니다. 테베는 이전의 위기와는 전혀 다른 안정된 상태에 들어갑니다. 겉으로 보기에 모든 것이 올바르게 자리 잡은 것처럼 보입니다.

평화를 맞은 테베와 숨겨진 진실

그러나 이 평화는 완전한 것이 아니었습니다. 도시의 안정은 보이지 않는 과거 위에 세워져 있었습니다. 오이디푸스 자신도 알지 못하는 진실이 그 아래에 존재하고 있었습니다. 평화는 진실이 드러나기 전까지 유지되는 상태였습니다.

이 장면은 한 가지 구조를 보여줍니다. 인간은 자신의 선택을 통해 질서를 만들지만 그 선택이 어떤 결과를 낳는지는 알 수 없습니다. 오이디푸스의 선택은 옳아 보이지만 동시에 비극의 조건을 완성합니다. 인간의 행위와 운명은 여기서 분리되지 않습니다.

이 이야기는 질문을 남깁니다. 인간이 올바른 선택을 하더라도 그 결과가 항상 올바른가라는 질문입니다. 오이디푸스의 삶은 그 질문을 통해 인간의 한계를 드러냅니다. 질서는 인간의 선택으로 만들어지지만 그 기반은 항상 불완전합니다.
