Above the stone palace of Thebes, Oedipus stands beside Queen Jocasta overlooking the city below. The walls, temples, and gray stone streets of Thebes spread outward beneath them, creating an atmosphere of restored order while a hidden tension quietly remains beneath the surface.
Oedipus Rex Episode 4 – The King of Thebes
After saving Thebes from the Sphinx, Oedipus becomes king, while the hidden structure of tragedy continues to grow.
Following the death of the Sphinx, the city of Thebes gradually begins recovering its peace. The fear that had isolated the city disappears, and the people slowly regain stability. At the center of this change stands Oedipus, the man who solved the riddle and freed the city from danger. He is no longer treated as a stranger passing through Thebes, but as the person who restored its future.
The citizens accept Oedipus as their new king. The throne left empty after the death of King Laius is finally filled once again. Oedipus does not reject this position and instead accepts the responsibility of ruling the city. What appears to be a reward for saving Thebes simultaneously becomes another step deeper into the fate already surrounding him.
As king, Oedipus begins restoring order throughout the city. He rules with intelligence and confidence, and the citizens trust his judgment. Thebes gradually returns to stability after a long period of fear and uncertainty. The city appears stronger and more secure than before.
However, the tragedy quietly reveals another tension beneath this success. Oedipus believes he has finally reached a place of stability through his own actions and choices. Yet the order he creates rests upon a truth he still does not know. Peace exists, but its foundation remains incomplete.
The rise of Oedipus as king of Thebes
Thebes begins recovering after the disappearance of the Sphinx. Fear slowly fades from the city, trade and movement return, and ordinary life begins restoring itself. The people no longer see themselves as trapped beneath an endless threat. Stability gradually returns to the city.
At the center of this recovery stands Oedipus. By solving the riddle that no one else could answer, he becomes the person who ended the city’s crisis. The citizens see him not only as a hero but also as someone capable of leading and protecting Thebes. Public trust begins gathering around him.
The throne of Thebes remains empty after the death of Laius, and the city now requires a new ruler. Oedipus accepts this role and becomes king. His rise appears natural and justified because it follows directly from his success in saving the city. The people believe a new order has finally begun.
As ruler, Oedipus demonstrates intelligence and decisiveness. He restores confidence to the city and governs with authority. Under his leadership, Thebes quickly regains political stability and public order. The city appears unified once again beneath a capable king.
Yet this rise also carries hidden irony within the tragedy. Oedipus ascends to the throne through actions that already connect him to the prophecy he hopes to escape. His success and his fate continue advancing together without his awareness.
Oedipus marries Jocasta
After becoming king, Oedipus marries Queen Jocasta. She had previously been the wife of Laius, the former king of Thebes. This marriage strengthens political stability and secures the legitimacy of Oedipus’s rule over the city.
Together, Oedipus and Jocasta rule Thebes as king and queen. The citizens respect them and experience a period of peace after years of fear and instability. The city appears entirely different from the condition it endured under the shadow of the Sphinx.
On the surface, everything now seems properly restored. The city has a ruler, the people have regained security, and order has returned. Oedipus himself believes he has finally escaped the dangers that once threatened his future. Stability appears complete.
However, the tragedy reveals that this stability rests upon a hidden truth. Neither Oedipus nor Jocasta fully understands the reality beneath their relationship. The marriage that appears to complete the order of the city simultaneously fulfills part of the prophecy already moving through their lives.
This creates one of the deepest ironies within the story. The very actions that seem to restore peace and legitimacy are also the actions completing the structure of the tragedy itself. Human beings believe they are creating stability while unknowingly moving toward destruction.
The peace of Thebes and the hidden truth
Although Thebes appears peaceful again, that peace remains incomplete. The order of the city has been rebuilt upon a past that remains concealed from everyone involved. Beneath the restored stability lies a truth that even Oedipus himself does not yet recognize.
The tragedy therefore presents peace as something fragile rather than permanent. Stability can continue only while the hidden truth remains buried. Once the truth begins emerging, the order built upon it will also begin collapsing. Calmness exists, but tension already waits beneath it.
This part of the story reveals another important structure. Human beings create order through their choices and actions, yet they cannot fully predict what consequences those actions may eventually produce. Oedipus makes decisions that appear wise and responsible, yet those same decisions continue completing the conditions necessary for tragedy.
The story therefore refuses to separate human action from fate. Oedipus rules Thebes through his own intelligence and effort, yet the results of those actions unfold inside conditions already established long before he understands them. Freedom and limitation continue existing together.
The life of Oedipus leaves behind a difficult question. Even when human beings make choices that appear correct and necessary, can the outcome still become tragic? The tragedy suggests that human order is always incomplete because human understanding itself remains incomplete.

스핑크스(Sphinx)가 사라진 이후 테베(Thebes)는 조금씩 평화를 되찾기 시작합니다. 도시를 고립시키고 있던 공포는 사라지고 사람들은 다시 안정감을 회복합니다. 이 변화 중심에는 수수께끼를 풀고 도시를 구해 낸 오이디푸스(Oedipus)가 서 있습니다. 그는 더 이상 테베를 지나가던 낯선 이방인이 아니라 도시 미래를 되돌린 존재가 됩니다.
테베 시민들은 오이디푸스를 새로운 왕으로 받아들입니다. 라이오스(Laius) 왕의 죽음 이후 비어 있던 왕좌는 다시 채워지게 됩니다. 오이디푸스 역시 그 자리를 거부하지 않고 도시를 다스리는 책임을 받아들입니다. 테베를 구한 대가처럼 보였던 선택은 동시에 그를 자신의 운명 안으로 더 깊이 끌어들이는 계기가 됩니다.

이 회복 중심에는 오이디푸스가 서 있습니다. 그는 누구도 풀지 못했던 수수께끼를 해결함으로써 도시 위기를 끝낸 존재가 됩니다. 시민들은 그를 단순한 영웅이 아니라 테베를 지키고 이끌 수 있는 사람으로 바라보기 시작합니다. 사람들의 신뢰는 점점 그에게 모여듭니다.
라이오스(Laius) 왕이 죽은 이후 테베의 왕좌는 비어 있는 상태였습니다. 이제 도시는 새로운 통치자를 필요로 하게 됩니다. 오이디푸스는 그 역할을 받아들이고 왕이 됩니다. 그는 도시를 구한 공로를 통해 자연스럽고 정당하게 왕좌 위로 올라선 것처럼 보입니다. 시민들은 새로운 질서가 시작되었다고 믿게 됩니다.
왕이 된 이후 오이디푸스는 강한 판단력과 통치 능력을 보여 줍니다. 그는 시민들에게 안정감을 돌려주고 도시 질서를 빠르게 회복시킵니다. 그의 통치 아래에서 테베는 다시 안정된 도시로 변해 갑니다. 혼란은 사라지고 하나의 통합된 질서가 만들어지는 것처럼 보입니다.
그러나 이 상승 안에도 비극 특유의 아이러니가 숨어 있습니다. 오이디푸스는 자신이 피하려 했던 예언과 연결된 행동들을 통해 왕좌에 오르게 되었기 때문입니다. 그의 성공과 운명은 서로 분리되지 않은 채 함께 움직이고 있습니다.
이오카스테(Jocasta)와 결혼한 오이디푸스(Oedipus)
왕이 된 이후 오이디푸스는 왕비 이오카스테(Jocasta)와 결혼하게 됩니다. 그녀는 이전 왕이었던 라이오스(Laius)의 아내였습니다. 이 결혼은 도시 질서를 안정시키고 새로운 왕권 정당성을 강화하는 선택처럼 보입니다. 테베는 왕과 왕비를 중심으로 다시 안정된 구조를 갖추게 됩니다.
오이디푸스와 이오카스테는 함께 테베를 다스리게 됩니다. 시민들은 두 사람을 존중하며 오랜 불안 이후 평화를 누리기 시작합니다. 도시 전체는 스핑크스 시절과는 전혀 다른 안정 상태 안으로 들어갑니다. 겉으로 보기에는 모든 것이 올바르게 자리 잡은 것처럼 보입니다.
오이디푸스 역시 자신이 과거 위험으로부터 벗어났다고 생각합니다. 그는 왕이 되었고 존경받으며 질서를 회복시켰습니다. 이제 삶은 안정된 방향으로 흘러가는 듯 보입니다. 그러나 작품은 그 안정 아래 숨겨진 진실이 여전히 존재하고 있음을 보여 줍니다.
오이디푸스와 이오카스테는 자신들의 관계 아래 어떤 진실이 숨어 있는지 아직 알지 못합니다. 도시 질서를 완성하는 것처럼 보이는 이 결혼은 동시에 예언 일부를 실현하는 행동이기도 합니다. 인간은 평화를 만든다고 믿지만 동시에 비극 구조를 완성하고 있습니다.
이 장면은 작품 안에서 가장 깊은 아이러니 가운데 하나를 보여 줍니다. 안정과 정당성을 세우는 행동이 동시에 파멸 조건이 되기 때문입니다. 인간은 질서를 만들고 있다고 생각하지만 그 질서 아래에는 아직 드러나지 않은 균열이 남아 있습니다.
평화를 맞은 테베(Thebes)와 숨겨진 진실
겉으로 보기에 테베는 다시 평화로운 도시가 된 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 그 평화는 완전하지 않습니다. 도시 질서는 모두가 알지 못하는 과거 위에 세워져 있습니다. 안정된 현재 아래에는 아직 드러나지 않은 진실이 숨겨져 있습니다.
작품은 여기서 평화를 영원한 상태가 아니라 매우 불완전한 상태로 보여 줍니다. 숨겨진 진실이 드러나지 않는 동안만 질서는 유지될 수 있기 때문입니다. 진실이 모습을 드러내기 시작하는 순간 그 위에 세워진 안정 역시 흔들리기 시작합니다. 평온함 아래에는 이미 긴장이 존재하고 있습니다.
이 부분은 인간 질서의 중요한 구조를 보여 줍니다. 인간은 자신의 선택과 행동을 통해 질서를 만들지만, 그 결과가 어떤 방향으로 이어질지는 끝까지 알지 못합니다. 오이디푸스 역시 책임감 있고 올바른 선택을 하고 있다고 믿지만, 그 선택들은 동시에 비극 조건을 완성하고 있습니다.
작품은 인간 행동과 운명을 분리하지 않습니다. 오이디푸스는 자신의 지성과 노력으로 테베를 통치하고 있지만, 그 행동 결과는 이미 오래전부터 움직이고 있던 조건 안에서 펼쳐지고 있습니다. 인간 자유와 한계는 끝내 분리되지 않은 채 함께 존재합니다.
오이디푸스의 삶은 하나의 어려운 질문을 남깁니다. 인간이 올바르고 책임감 있는 선택을 했다고 해서 결과 역시 반드시 올바른 방향으로 이어지는가라는 질문입니다. 작품은 인간 질서 자체가 인간 이해 한계 위에 세워져 있기 때문에 끝내 완전해질 수 없음을 보여 줍니다.
