In the gray stone city of Thebes, citizens collapse across the streets as a plague spreads through the city. Weak light and heavy air cover the temples and walls, while at the center Oedipus stands overlooking the suffering city, trying to uncover the hidden cause behind the disaster.

The plague that strikes Thebes becomes more than a disaster, as a hidden truth buried beneath the city slowly emerges into the open.

After Oedipus becomes king, Thebes appears stable and peaceful once again. However, a sudden plague spreads through the city. People and livestock die at the same time, and the order of the city quickly begins to collapse. Thebes, which had once escaped fear, falls once more into confusion and suffering. This becomes the first great crisis faced by the city under the rule of Oedipus.

The citizens suffer without understanding the cause. The disease is not viewed as a simple natural event. Instead, people begin to feel that some deeper problem remains hidden within the city itself. The crisis expands beyond individual suffering and grows into a problem affecting the entire community.

The tragedy uses the plague not merely as a disaster but as a structural signal. A hidden problem buried beneath the surface begins to appear outwardly in visible form. The truth concealed inside the city can no longer remain entirely hidden. The narrative gradually shifts toward the search for an unseen cause.

Oedipus also feels responsible for restoring order to the city. As king, he decides to search for the cause of the disaster himself. Yet the tragedy reveals that he still does not understand that he already stands at the center of the problem. The search for truth gradually turns into a search directed toward himself.

The plague in Thebes and its cause

The sudden plague rapidly destroys the stability of Thebes. People fall into fear before deaths they cannot explain, and the order of the city begins to weaken. The disease spreads not only among humans but also among livestock, pushing the entire city toward collapse. Stability quickly transforms into anxiety and disorder.

The citizens continue suffering without understanding the reason behind the catastrophe. The plague is not interpreted as a simple natural phenomenon. Instead, people begin believing that some unresolved problem remains hidden within the city. The crisis gradually expands into a collective condition affecting the entire community.

The tragedy presents the plague as an outward sign of something concealed beneath the surface. A hidden imbalance and unresolved guilt within the city begin appearing visibly through suffering and disease. The plague becomes more than illness. It turns into evidence that the structure supporting the city has begun breaking apart.

The people of Thebes can no longer solve the crisis through individual effort alone. The entire city gathers around a single question. Why has this disaster appeared? The story gradually reveals that the answer will ultimately lead back toward human action and responsibility.

From this point onward, the narrative moves away from a story about stable rule and enters the pursuit of truth. The plague becomes both a citywide disaster and the force that begins uncovering a hidden past.

The oracle’s demand to find the killer

Oedipus decides to seek an oracle in order to save the city. He sends a messenger to Delphi to ask for the will of the god. The oracle returns with the declaration that the pollution corrupting the city has not yet been removed. It reveals that the cause is connected to a murder committed long ago.

The oracle does not provide a simple solution. Instead, it places a question before the entire city. Who committed the murder? The problem immediately shifts away from nature and toward human action. The plague begins to be understood as the consequence of human guilt.

At this moment, the tragedy reveals what the order of a city is built upon. A community is not sustained by force alone. Invisible justice and balance must also remain intact. Once justice collapses, order begins collapsing as well.

The oracle functions as the mechanism that exposes this hidden structure again. It does not merely predict the future. Instead, it forces the concealed truth of the city back into view. The past can no longer remain buried beneath stability.

After this moment, the tension of the story deepens further. Finding the murderer is no longer simply about identifying a criminal. It becomes a process that threatens to shake the entire structure of the city itself.

Oedipus searching for the murderer

Oedipus begins acting directly in order to save Thebes. He publicly declares that he will find the murderer responsible for the city’s suffering. As king, he believes it is his duty to solve the crisis himself. This decision gradually draws him deeper into the center of the event.

Before the citizens, he promises that the truth will be revealed. He swears that the killer will be discovered no matter the cost. This declaration moves the entire city in a single direction. The story now enters a stage of investigation, pursuit, and revelation.

However, a paradox already exists within this choice. The man seeking the truth unknowingly stands at the center of that very truth. Oedipus continues moving forward without understanding his own position within the structure he is investigating. Human beings continue choosing while remaining unable to fully see themselves.

The tragedy therefore raises a deeper question about truth itself. When human beings seek truth, can they ever remain separate from it? Oedipus believes he is acting justly and responsibly, yet his actions gradually become the path leading toward tragedy.

The search for the cause of the plague slowly expands into the exposure of the entire hidden structure beneath the city. What first appears to be an investigation into a single crime gradually becomes a search uncovering the reality of Oedipus’s own life. The concealed truth now prepares to reveal itself completely.

오이디푸스는 도시를 구하기 위해 신탁을 구하기로 결정합니다. 그는 델포이(Delphi)에 사람을 보내 신의 뜻을 묻습니다. 그리고 돌아온 신탁은 도시를 더럽히고 있는 오염이 아직 제거되지 않았다고 말합니다. 그 원인은 오래전 일어난 살인 사건과 연결되어 있다는 사실이 드러납니다.

신탁은 단순한 해결책을 주지 않습니다. 대신 하나의 질문을 도시 전체 앞에 남깁니다. 누가 그 살인을 저질렀는가라는 질문입니다. 문제는 자연 현상에서 인간 행동 문제로 이동합니다. 전염병은 인간 죄와 연결된 결과로 이해되기 시작합니다.

이 순간 작품은 도시 질서가 무엇 위에 세워져 있는지를 드러냅니다. 공동체 질서는 단순한 힘만으로 유지되지 않습니다. 보이지 않는 정의와 균형이 유지되어야만 질서 역시 유지될 수 있습니다. 정의가 무너지면 질서 역시 함께 흔들립니다.

살인자를 찾는 오이디푸스(Oedipus)의 추적
