A plague strikes Thebes, and Oedipus vows to find the murderer responsible for the city’s suffering.

The plague in Thebes and its cause

A sudden plague begins to spread in Thebes. People and livestock start dying at the same time, and the order of the city begins to collapse. The once peaceful city falls back into fear and chaos. This moment marks the first crisis faced by the city after Oedipus became king.

The people suffer without knowing the cause. The disease is not seen as a simple natural phenomenon but as an event connected to a deeper cause. The entire city begins to move as one around a single problem. This crisis expands from individuals to the entire community.

This situation functions not as a simple disaster but as a structural signal. A hidden problem begins to appear in an external form. The plague is interpreted as the result of something concealed within the city. The story now shifts toward tracing an unseen cause.

The oracle’s demand to find the killer

Oedipus seeks an oracle to resolve this problem. He sends a messenger to Delphi to ask for the will of the god. The oracle states that the cause of the city’s pollution has not yet been removed. It reveals that the cause is connected to a murder in the past.

The oracle returns not with a simple answer but in the form of a question. It presents the problem of who committed the murder. The issue shifts from nature to human action. The plague is understood as a consequence of human guilt.

At this moment, the rule of the event becomes clear. The order of the city is built upon an unseen foundation of justice. When justice collapses, order collapses as well. The oracle functions as a mechanism that reveals this structure again.

Oedipus searching for the murderer

Oedipus takes action himself to save the city. He declares that he will find the murderer. As king, he takes on the responsibility to solve the problem. This decision draws him into the center of the event.

He promises before the citizens that he will reveal the truth. He declares that he will find the murderer without fail. This declaration moves the entire city in a single direction. The event now enters a stage of investigation and pursuit.

However, a paradox exists within this choice. The one who seeks the truth stands at the center of that truth. Oedipus moves forward without knowing this. Humans continue to choose without knowing their own position.

This scene leaves a question. When humans seek the truth, are they ever free from it? Oedipus’s choice appears to be right, yet it becomes the path toward tragedy. Truth collapses structure the moment it is revealed. The search for causes ultimately reveals the entire structure.

테베에는 갑작스럽게 전염병이 퍼지기 시작합니다. 도시의 사람들과 가축이 동시에 죽어가며 질서가 무너지기 시작합니다. 평화롭던 도시는 다시 공포와 혼란 속으로 들어갑니다. 이 장면은 왕이 된 이후 처음으로 맞이하는 도시 전체의 위기입니다.

사람들은 그 원인을 알지 못한 채 고통 속에 놓입니다. 질병은 단순한 자연 현상이 아니라 어떤 원인과 연결된 사건으로 받아들여집니다. 도시 전체가 하나의 문제에 묶여 움직이기 시작합니다. 이 위기는 개인이 아니라 공동체 전체의 문제로 확장됩니다.

이 상황은 단순한 재난이 아니라 구조적 신호로 작용합니다. 보이지 않던 문제가 외부의 형태로 드러나기 시작합니다. 전염병은 도시 내부에 숨겨진 어떤 사건의 결과로 해석됩니다. 이야기는 이제 보이지 않는 원인을 추적하는 방향으로 이동합니다.

델포이 신탁이 요구한 살인자의 정체

오이디푸스는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 신탁을 요청합니다. 그는 델포이로 사자를 보내 신의 뜻을 묻습니다. 신탁은 도시를 오염시킨 원인이 아직 제거되지 않았다고 말합니다. 그리고 그 원인은 과거의 살인 사건과 연결되어 있다고 밝힙니다.

신탁은 단순한 답이 아니라 질문의 형태로 돌아옵니다. 누가 그 살인을 저질렀는가라는 문제가 제시됩니다. 문제는 이제 자연이 아니라 인간의 행위로 이동합니다. 전염병은 인간의 죄와 연결된 결과로 해석됩니다.

이 순간 사건의 규칙이 드러납니다. 도시의 질서는 보이지 않는 정의 위에 세워져 있다는 사실입니다. 정의가 무너지면 질서도 함께 무너집니다. 신탁은 그 구조를 다시 드러내는 장치로 작동합니다.

살인자를 찾는 오이디푸스의 추적

오이디푸스는 도시를 구하기 위해 직접 행동에 나섭니다. 그는 살인자를 찾아내겠다고 선언합니다. 왕으로서 그는 문제를 해결할 책임을 스스로 짊어집니다. 이 선택은 그를 사건의 중심으로 끌어당깁니다.

그는 시민들 앞에서 진실을 밝히겠다고 약속합니다. 그리고 살인자를 반드시 찾아내겠다고 선언합니다. 이 선언은 도시 전체를 하나의 방향으로 움직이게 합니다. 사건은 이제 조사와 추적의 단계로 들어갑니다.
